I watched "DEPARTURE" last night. It's Japanese movie. Damn good. Recommended to all.... Don't forget to bring lots n lots n lots of tissue. Humor and Drama side by side....

Departures is terrific, and a great antidote to the summer blockbuster blahs.

The last movie I watched on DVD? Predator 2.

Aiyoo. Cannot lar. Learned all the wrong lessons from its predecessor - lots of ultra-violence, but no unique, likable characters. And Danny Glover is a fine character actor, but he total fail at action hero.

But it is in this movie that Bill Paxton scored his hat-trick - the only actor to be killed by a Terminator, an Alien, and a Predator. biggrin.gif

Also saw The Hurt Locker. It's basically a smarter, rawer, and more realistic version of The Kingdom. Not sure if it's deserving of all the lavish praise it's been getting, but it's very good.

Another movie I'm really hoping makes it to our cinemas... but doubt it will. <sigh>

*Sigh*

Used to be, you cannot talk any studios into product live action fantasy movie, because

1) They are TERRIBLY expensive to produce
2) They TERRIBLY difficult to make.

In the Eighties, 3 such movies, defied odds and were produced,

1) Legendary puppeteer Jim Henson made a movie called Dark Crystal (Critically acclaim, but didn't do much in the box office, apparently had a sequel in production limbo)
2) with then not yet A-Lister Tom Cruise and Ridley Scott directed mildly successful in the box-office Legend, only mildly. A huge set burnt down halfway into making the movie, causing a big chunk of the movie not to be flimed.
3) Producer/Director powerhouse George Lucas directed another mildy successful Willow.

Also not forgetting movies like Krull (not to be confused with Kull The Conqueror) and The Neverending Story (both more European produced and later US released) [both movies, I in love with]
Actually, I think the '80s were a minor Golden Age of fantasy films. You left out a number of titles - Conan the Barbarian, Conan the Destroyer, Dragonslayer, Ladyhawke, Labyrinth, Excalibur, and I'm sure I'm forgetting many others.

After that, yes, fantasy fell into doldrums before it was rescued by Harry Potter and LOTR.

Yes, I did, and I apologised

I also left out my all time favorite movie, The Princess Bride (it always gives me a warm fuzz feeling on the inside... smile.gif )

When I was writing above, I was thinking BIG budget

But then it could be argued that Conan the Barbarian, Dragonslayer, Excalibur were big budget...

There were also "interesting" fantasy movies during the 80s like Sword and The Sorcerer and the terrible Barbarians (with twin muscled laden actors).

My bad

No worries. But I deliberately left out the Z-grade Italian-made flicks. There were quite a few of those. biggrin.gif

12 Angry Men. 1957 black & white version starring Henry Fonda.

All time classic. Just watched it again earlier while idling away the night (WoW servers down).

Great film about 12 jurors discussing a murder case. Very interesting to see the speech patterns and mannerisms of the times, and the scene when Lee J. Cobb's character's eyes bulged in blinding rage will stick in my mind for a long time.

I've not seen the original, but I caught the 1997 made-for-TV remake. The cast included Jack Lemmon, George C. Scott, Hume Cronyn, Edward James Olmos, James Gandolfini, and Armin Mueller-Stahl. And it was directed by William Friedkin. With names like that, cannot fail. smile.gif

2) A Few Good Men has nothing on 12 Angry Men.
12 Angry Men is the better movie, agreed. But when I watched A Few Good Men, I was preparing for an interschool debate competition. It was... inspiring. laugh.gif

lol, it's quite a popular book I think, but it isnt surprising that you dont know many who have read it because... you know how malaysians are. laugh.gif

Its my favourite Gaiman book. Ingenious and hilarious at every turn.
I've read it too. The story is very Gaiman, but the actual writing strikes me as more Pratchett.

4)    Had always wanted to read Stardust the book. Have you had the chance to read it? Any good? (If you had read it)
I liked it a lot, but I would recommend getting the graphic novel version. Charles Vess' art is just as gorgeous as Gaiman's writing.

I could not agree less. HGTG was an absolute mess - a trainwreck. I didn't find it funny, I didn't find it absurd, I just found it boring.
I thought it was charming in parts, but nowhere near a worthy adaptation of the book.

Have you every read the stand alone 50th issue of The Sandman. If yes, what did you think?
I have the complete Sandman collection, and yes, "Ramadan" is one of the best stories.

(Although it does read a bit odd to Malaysian eyes. Harun al-Rashid willing to batal puasa during fasting month, with wine no less? laugh.gif )

Psycho, man. Psycho is WIN.

Well, except for that scene with the psychiatrist at the end. That was suck.

Yes. I'm very curious to know how badly this movie is censored, especially the opening scenes.
