Transformer 2

Pro
LOUD! (Good sound effects). Visually EXPENSIVE!! This time you can tell the difference between the Deceptorcons (or however you spell them) and Autobots when they fight.

Con
A recruitment drive for the US army!!

Final Words
Very much like a McD meal, you think you're full, but it's all empty carbs and fat!! A 2:30 hours movie, that could have easily been done in 1:30 hours....

Yeah I really liked that one.

Also someone mentioned Stardust a few posts back. That was one charming movie.
*
Yes, love Stardust too. I like Neil Gaiman's work (Sandman issue #50, if you can get a copy, grab it)

It's the 2000's version of Princess Bride (if only they get the Blu-Ray transfer right!!)

Added on June 24, 2009, 9:48 pmMy Bloody Valentine 3D

How the Heck did they show this in Malaysia's cinema!?!

The open credts and then the end credits!!!!!!? Unless you are a Jensen Ackles diehard fan, don't worry about this!!!

terminator salvation - 6/10
star trek - 8/10
angels and demons - 3/10
night at the museum 2 - 4/10
transformers 2: roll on the floor - 3/10

This summer sucks really badly.

Edit: mistyped - tf2 is 3/10 not 1/10. It may become 1/10 over time though.

Great review list

My sentiments exactly... Though have to admit, I have not watched Angels and Demons (was VERY disappointed by Da Vinci Code, shouldn't have read the book first, since I have read the book for Angels and Demons, thought I give it a miss) and Night at the Museum 2 (thought that the first one was mildly amusing only, will wait for DVD)

Cheers

Yeah... embarrassing that it's only my first Kurosawa!

Anyway tonight if I'm free I will watch Jackie Brown, the only QT film I've not seen. I love all his other movies except for Deathproof.

Makakeke is right, RAN is very good too.

Hmm, what did you NOT like about Deathproof

Safe to say you didn't like Planet Terror?

Planet Terror was pretty awesome fun.

Deathproof had terrible dialogue (especially coming from Tarantino), very unlikeable characters (I was rooting for Kurt Russell all along), and a plot that simply resets itself to zero halfway through. Both halves end with great sequences though - that car crash and that car chase. I saw the longer cut around 2 years ago and disliked it, but I saw the shorter theatrical cut a few weeks back and it was much better. Probably because some flabby dialgue has been cut. And that awful lap dance is out the window too.
*
Well, I was lucky enough to be in Singapore when they had the special double screening of Death Proof and Planet Terror

I have to say that I like BOTH of the movie (Planet Terror slightly more then Death Proof)

I think the whole concept was VERY sound, but the mass market wasn't ready for it!! (Yes, but the same market can watch all 6 episodes of Star Wars and/or Extended Version of all three Lord of the Rings movies, in ONE seating!!? tongue.gif)

I think what impress me about Death Proof is the stunts. Most of it was practical. Very , VERY little CGI!! When the Stunt Women/Actress was on the hood of the car, SHE WAS ON THE HOOD OF THE CAR. NO Harness!!

Who would have thunk that Kurt Russell would be such an S.O.B!!!! And true by the end of the movie, who do somewaht sympathise with him, BUT he was SUCH an S.O.B (poor Rosie McGowan)!!!!! nod.gif

Saw Push on DVD yesterday. Sound premise but delivery was... Lacking a better term "chop suei" [messy]. If they do get to do a part 2, hope they iron out some things... I respect that people like this movie, but some things just didn't click with me. My two sens worth.

Just watched Knowing on BD, AMAZING PQ and SQ!

A movie about prophecy?! Hm.....

Storyline as a unique ending.

Not you run of the mill hollywood ending

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Curiously, another movie 2012 (about the end of the Mayan calender = end of the world) is around the corner!!

Anyway, a lot of plot holes there.

Hello!

I can understand how my previous posting can be misread. I was purposely vague!! tongue.gif

There is a reason why I describe the ending as unique for a hollywood movie. Please refer to spoiler (eg if you are interested in watching the movie, NOT a good idea to read the spoiler.)

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

I do see you point, having movies like Arrival, Contact, MIB, Independence Day, and the past and present The Day The Earth Stood Still have this undertone. But this movie took it to the next level.

Also, this movie has a KICKING AQ!! nod.gif

ok, that is kinda unique lol. But a lot of thing inside this movie is done before by other movie. When I watch it, I feel like "been there, done that".
Does not raise any emotion during certain catastrophe...

Yes, and allow me to quote a phase that StupidityPolice likes to use. Those scenes you had described were predestrian (eg an accident by the road, and cars from the other side of the road stop to see but is emotionally detached)

Yes, I believe if the director was better at thugging at the heartstrings of the viewers, it would have been more successful.

Not sure if this is an appropriate question, but you are a Zelda fan? If yes, which is your favorite??

I watched the Back to the Future trilogy over the past 2 weeks. First is great, second is a mess but still entertains, third is perhaps almost great. Overall a very enjoyable trilogy.

Yes, Michael J Fox and Christopher Lloyd at their best. Although having Lea Thompson acting as both his mom and girlfriend got a little confusing....

QUOTE(QuickFire @ Jul 12 2009, 08:43 PM)
Also saw The Hurt Locker. It's basically a smarter, rawer, and more realistic version of The Kingdom. Not sure if it's deserving of all the lavish praise it's been getting, but it's very good.

Team America: World Police. Ever wanted to make action setpieces out of your LEGO toys when you were a kid? Well I think this fits the bill, although technically it's puppets. The satire is crude and offensive, but there are many hilarious moments. The "dicks, pussies, and assholes" line is one. Plus the songs are friggin hilarious too.
*
I especially like the part where a bunch of American soldiers busted into Paris and blew up the Eiffel Tower, all in the name of removing the threat of WMD! Classic!! There are other classic parts as well which I cannot go into, to keep this forum PG13!! tongue.gif

QUOTE(QuickFire @ Jul 12 2009, 08:43 PM)
Primal Fear. Absorbing and entertaining, with great performances by a (perhaps overly) charming Gere and Norton. Norton seems to relish in roles which let him run wild. He should stick to roles like that than stuff like The Illusionist. Nice twist in the end too.
*
One of my all time favorite movie. Just watched it again recently. If you watch it for the first time, you keep guessing who the killer is, until the very end. Very disturbing (not in Hannibal Lector style, but how one can sell an 'act')

My 2 cents worth...

*Sigh*

Used to be, you cannot talk any studios into producing live action fantasy movie, because

1) They are TERRIBLY expensive to produce
2) They TERRIBLY difficult to make.

In the Eighties, 3 stand-out movies, defied odds and were produced,

1) Legendary puppeteer Jim Henson made a movie called Dark Crystal (Critically acclaim, but didn't do much in the box office, apparently had a sequel in production limbo)
2) with then not yet A-Lister Tom Cruise and Ridley Scott directed mildly successful box-office, Legend, only mildly. A huge set burnt down halfway into making the movie, causing a big chunk of the movie not to be flimed.
3) Producer/Director powerhouse George Lucas directed another mildy successful Willow.

Also not forgetting movies like Krull (not to be confused with Kull The Conqueror) and The Neverending Story (both more European produced and later US released) [both movies, I in love with]

The in the year 2000++ LOTR and Harry Potter changed movie producers mindset. They were BIG box-office earners.

Now movie producers CANNOT get enough of get their greedy hands on the rights to fantasy books fast enough... which isn't necessary a good thing...

Case in point Eragon (a bearable book) but a blah movie

And a movie I watched yesterday night, Inkheart, a blah(squared) fantasy movie and after watching the movie, I have absolutely no impulse to get the book to read.

Is this the end of Brandon Fraser's movie career!!?

After The Mummy 3 and this movie, one should hope so...

Gattaca.

Wow. Apart from a few moments when the plot gets a bit far-fetched, this was stunning. It isn't the kind of ambiguous sci-fi film which leaves questions unanswered and asks you to make up your own interpretations, but I dont think it is any lesser because of this. Amazing film and probably instantly one of my favourite films.
*
Hm....

What had happened since Gattaca.

Ethan Hawke is no longer the IT guys.

Jude Law is.

Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman is no longer an item.

Several Rovers had crashed landed on Mars

And the Americans are retiring their failed project called the Space Shuttle Program....

What a difference 10 years make
876000 hours (Sung to What A Difference a day make)

Oh... Gattaca, good movie!! tongue.gif

Actually, I think the '80s were a minor Golden Age of fantasy films. You left out a number of titles - Conan the Barbarian, Conan the Destroyer, Dragonslayer, Ladyhawke, Labyrinth, Excalibur, and I'm sure I'm forgetting many others.

After that, yes, fantasy fell into doldrums before it was rescued by Harry Potter and LOTR.
*
Yes, I did, and I apologised

I also left out my all time favorite movie, The Princess Bride (it always gives me a warm fuzz feeling on the inside... smile.gif )

When I was writing above, I was thinking BIG budget

But then it could be argued that Conan the Barbarian, Dragonslayer, Excalibur were big budget...

There were also "interesting" fantasy movies during the 80s like Sword and The Sorcerer and the terrible Barbarians (with twin muscled laden actors).

My bad

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince

Just watched this in Pavillion's THX cinema and what can one say...

If you are a lover of the books, you will like it.

If you are a lover of the movies, you will like it.

With each progressive movie, the tone of the movie gets darker

And this is the darkest of them all (until the next two come out I suppose)

With each successive director, Chris Columbus (childlike), Alfonso CuarĂ³n (modern wardrobe), Mike Newell (A PG13 werewolf), David Yates (grounded the magical world with muggle's world) each brings their unique vision to the movie

This movie is a very faithful adaptation of the book accept for a little part in the middle of the movie (a scene in the movie that is NOT in the books)

And the end... better not spoil it for you guys (and gals)

In short, if you are a fan of Potter's, go see it, if not, wouldn't matter what I say!

Maybe the biggest box office of the year (not difficult with this years movie offerings *Sigh*)

My two sens worth

O-M-G! What a SCARY movie!

There are REALLY some disturbing scenes.

And supposedly based on a TRUE story.

If you like scary movie, YOU'LL WANT TO WATCHED THIS.

If you watch this on DVD/Blu-Ray, there is a special documentary about the really people in the movie. And the stuff they were talking about the house is EVEN SCARIER...

Anyone has any thought about "From Hell" movie starring Johnny Depp? This movie is about Jack the Ripper. Planning to buy the 50GB Dual Layer Blu-Ray Disc with DTS-HD-MA.

Hope it's worth it for Rm100 i'm going to spend.
*
Pretty good movie.

Johnny Depp character here is a stark contrast with his character in Sleepy Hollow (although they wear the same costume!! tongue.gif)

Heather Graham fresh from her Boogie Nights role (interesting how poor people sleep in Ye Old England) and Ian Holm's pre hobbit era

I have the DVD, and the bass in that is good.

Should be very good on BD.

Enjoy your 100 bucks investment!! tongue.gif

If not, you can always sell it to me, cheap!! nod.gif

Sleuth (1972)

This movie can be aptly labelled as a "thinking man's" movie. I do consider myself a thinker and I'm a sucker for movies like this. There is a Hitchcock-ian aura that surrounds Sleuth and if you love Dial M For Murder and Rope, you'll definitely love this. The script is extremely well written. Sarcastic, witty, and quite deceitful too. Caine and Olivier were a perfect match to bring out the best out of the script. There is no rocket science, no special effects, not even a third actor, just plain dialogue that will change the way you view movies. 4.5/5
*
Have to admit, haven't watched that but did like

Without a Clue (1988), where Michael Caine plays a good (or should that be bad!?! tongue.gif) Sherlock Holmes and Ben Kingsley plays Dr. John Watson. Love this movie and should be a good watch just before Downey Jr's Sherlock!! nod.gif
