Big pack is just too much unless you can store the whole bag in the fridge. The food can become stale.
Get sample packs or the 500g/1kg bags.

They eat roughly 2 tablespoons per day so its unlikely you will be able to use a 5k bag without it going stale hehe. However I believe you also own cats? Perhaps you could do what Crazymouse does with her dogs and let them share.
Cats usually get kidney stones because the silly things never drink enough water, being on a dry food diet does not help :/ About RC giving kidney stones to cats its abit of a stretch but entirely possible, RC is a little high in grain content which can lead to the urine becoming more alkaline and then resulting in kidney stones ( it should be acidic, just like dogs ) However to be fair its not just RC that contains alot of fillers (grains), many non holistic brands are the same. Edit: mm..yeah..its me (cim) This post has been edited by Hunter_Mx: Feb 17 2008, 10:30 PM |

T.T plus small... her size now is as same as small when I bring back my Ken... but I think she looks skinny.... really skinny.... but she TAME~~~ haha other than the body size... she's really tame... and like to sniff on people... lol anyway... my urgent concern is about the food... I'd been searching for RC food here.. but they only have RC kitten... not Baby cat... -.-" and everywhere I went.. they have whiskas all over... also... it says that whiskas is not a good brand right? but the protein inside is 30%... i thought for hedgie 30% is a perfect for them? if dun have RC can I buy any cat food brand that contains of 30% protein? @.@ |

what makes whiskas bad is not the nutrient % but the ingredients. Low quality ingredients, alot of additives, preservatives, colouring, flavouring and alot of filler ingredients that make the food filling but no nutritional benefit.
Whiskas is like eating colourfull chicken flavoured flour snack food RC is like eating chicken nuggets High quality hollistic brand is like eating roast chicken All might have 30% protein but the source of the protein is different RC kitten is a safe alternative to babycat This post has been edited by Cimredopyh: Feb 18 2008, 05:18 PM |

HAhaha.... that is such a good way to put it. Yes, Whiskas, Friskies... most commercial supermarket brands have like 30% protein and all but never judge the food by looking at the protein and fat % first, but read the ingredients.... most commercial brands get their protein from chicken fat and chicken by-products.... now which is better? Those chicken fat and chicken by-products? Or real meat and meat meal?Whiskas is like eating colourfull chicken flavoured flour snack food RC is like eating chicken nuggets High quality hollistic brand is like eating roast chicken All might have 30% protein but the source of the protein is different RC kitten is a safe alternative to babycat |

The only thing we worry about giving RC in the first place is that they can get addicted to it.
Pet Safari had a last bag of Solid Gold for cats. Quite expensive but I think it's worth it if you wanna feed only your hedgie. 1.8kg RM40+ Ingredients wise I like. Better than a lot of stuff in the market, but of course you gotta dig deep into your pockets. lol Once PetsPeople has stock again, I will go and look see. Its difficult to tell when they are pregnant, even for a vet.
Most important: If she gives birth, do not touch mom or the hoglets at all, leave them alone, do not even try to peek at them, or she will probably EAT them. heres a guide on how to prepare and what to do http://www.hedgehogworld.com/content/view/44/42/ This post has been edited by Cimredopyh: Feb 19 2008, 03:36 AM |

Please google and read up on hedgehog breeding and care.... there is so much to learn, don't rely on this forum only.
To know whether pregnant, the best way is to invest in a digital kitchen scale, Ikea has for RM99 I think..... I also have a digital scale at home and purposely bought it to monitor my Donut when she was pregnant. Do not stress your hedgehog, give lots of food and plenty of water and keep in a quiet place. No loud noise or other animals around. Do not peek or touch your hedgehog or the hoglets. Provide a hidebox with nesting material like shredded paper towels. If you have problems with the mother rejecting her hoglets or not feeding her hoglets, PM me.... I have experience with handrearing hoglets that are abandon n underage. |

Digital scale, quite accurate. It weighs in grams, ounce.... maximum weight is 5kg. You can get from Cosway also, I got mine thru a friend here, RM40 only when original price is RM100+. I saw IKEA selling one, much better quality than mine since mine is light and feels like plastic, the IKEA one looks tougher.
You can check on ebay or lelong.com.my as got people selling there as well. Anyway, yes, meat meal is much better. I also wonder how a hedgehog came into his house.... hedgehogs aren't wild in Malaysia, porcupine is lah. |

methinks it might be an 'escaped' hedgehog! |

QUOTE(climacool @ Feb 21 2008, 02:35 PM) This is untrue of hedgehogs, but true for some types of other animals. For hedgehogs there is no difference between albino and any other colours in terms of lifespan, susceptibility to disease or behavior. QUOTE(livingmonolith @ Feb 21 2008, 02:45 PM) hahaha, yeah, i think it's a bit unlikely too to feed and feel a wild porcupine... I think that possibly what he means is someone gave him one, or brought a hedgehog to his house.but escaped hedgehogs are kinda rare too, isn't it? Both the wild porcupine or escaped hedgehog voluntarily coming to his house are very unlikely Is he a male? If he has something in the middle of the tummy that looks like a bellybutton he is male And if the hard lump you feel runs along that to the base of the tail or the hard lump IS the bellybutton then dont worry and stop molesting the poor guys manhood If not then i dont really know what it could be, altho it is sadly true the hedgehogs are prone to cancerous growths.
