I need to change her newspaper liao heheheh....Hopefully, if she does successfully bring up healthy hoglets, she would teach them how to use litter tray lah. I find it so much cleaner now that she uses the tray. |

Suddenly very busy then V4 now already 3 pages.. huhu.. well anyway, congratz for the new thread... hao.. i really likes the FAQ hehe hun.. when is the big day? wow, she's really putting on a lot of weight.. she must be very chubby rite now.. wanna see her pic.. pleasee is there any slight difference between an s&p and a cinnamon.. QUOTE(climacool @ Oct 10 2007, 06:14 PM) Har? Aiyoh.... sure wet with pee hahahah Got poo on the hoglet?QUOTE(Moogle Stiltzkin @ Oct 10 2007, 07:43 PM) Henrieta..... DIED !!!! NUUUUUU!!! I'm sorry for your lost....but i don't think a snake is the culprit. A snake would never go and harm another animal unless it feels threaten or scared. Hedgehogs also do not smell like rodents so snakes are not attracted.... most likely she died from internal bleeding as you said, she poop with blood. Are you sure got puncture wounds on the nose? Snake puncture wounds are not black.... they go infected and inflamed, becoming purplish. Greenish foam is bile, meaning she vomited her gastric juices. My poor hedgehog was shitting blood a bit few weeks ago but it was only on 1-2 occasion so didn't think much of it. Then my father called up and said he saw the hedgehog lying on it's water bowl. I thought she was just playing about since she has a tendency to lie down and act lazy. Then the next day the hedgehog was near the bowl still not moving and after giving it a prod found it dead !!! It's nose is blackish and has some sort of puncture. It's mouth was foaming and had blood and some sort of greenish foam color. I suspect a snake came and bit my poor Henrieta !!! Because i keep my hedgehogs at the back of the house and although it has large grills it won't stop any snakes that come from the backstreet outside ! I had some netting but i leave them off because it obstructs the hedgy wheel. Mr moogle's seems to be fine because he has the pent house above Henrieta. This is a totally f***ed up weekend for me and my hedgys .... i buried her opposite my house, may she rest in peace Henrieta - my favourite hedgehog. Fat hedgy that is friendly and likes to lie flat on the cool glass. You will be remembered amen Ps: after Henrieta's assassination by evil reptile, i called a vet to see how much it would be to take mr moogle's in for a check up, but they said keeping hedgehogs is illegal in malaysia and you need a permit or something. Is this true ? I also have 1 house vacancy for any extra hegdy that needs a home since the bottom rack is empty, i have plenty of hedgy baby kitten food and an extra wheel ! This is why I don't think your hedgehog died from a snake bite: QUOTE hedgehog http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_the_Afri...n_his_communityThey eat all sorts of insects and animals thet we consider pests. Their diet consists of small animals, including worms, insects, frogs, mice, and even poisonous snakes; they have a high level of immunity to viper venom. A hedgehog will bite a snake and then roll itself up as the snake strikes, repeating this procedure until the snake is dead. A hedgehog if feels threaten or in danger would roll up in a ball, causing the snake to not strike the face at all but the quills only and the quills are too sharp for the snake to do damage. Some hedgehogs can survive from venom but they aren't immune.... but still, a hedgehog would be in a ball than show it's full body, especially its face fully exposed to a snake. I'm sorry for your lost but I really think it could be something internal in her. Hedgehogs are legal.... Porcupines are not.... your vet confused with 2 species.... Today I heard the silliest thing.... I was at a petshop buying RM5 worth of mealworms.... then I'm quite ok with the staff, always chat with them so I told her the mealworms were for my hedgehogs, then she told me this:
"Hedgehogs, don't they die easily?" I was like "Huh? I've been keeping for 2 years lah" and then she was shock.... she told me there used to be a customer who bought 2 hoglets.... they died in a week.... you know why? The person did not do research lah..... For 1 week, the hoglets had nothing to eat but mealworms.... worst is that the mealworms didn't eat so they had very low nutrition in them..... since mealworms are just high in fat and moisture, there was nothing to sustain the health of the hoglets, so they died.... So I told the staff that next time anyone ask about diet, tell them feed high quality catfood like RC, then feed mealworms as snacks. QUOTE(vincent09 @ Oct 11 2007, 08:42 AM) Moogle Stiltzkin, sorry for your lost T-T. But hope your Henrieta will be nice in other world there, it will remember you all the time. Porcupines have healthier meat than beef, lower in uric acid and also very tender. It is illegal to keep a porcupine or catch a porcupine without a permit..... but now they are farming them for the exotic meat trade so less wild porcupines become dinner.... it was in the newspapers.... summore say porcupine meat is very good for rendang.... crazy lah. Next what they farm? Bear and Tiger? About Porcupines, does anyone know that malaysia will produce huge amount of malay Porcupines? Why they breeding for that? The answer is ....... EAT... OMG. |

Tablespoon is about the chinese soup spoon size.... anyway, as long you feed a balance diet of catfood and mealworms, your hedgie won't die lah..... you imagine if someone just give you plain rice for 1 week? You will have energy but can be thin and feel unwell coz no vitamins, no protein, no minerals.... If your hedgie eats fruits, good. Some hedgies do not like fruits....

QUOTE(broken_string @ Oct 12 2007, 11:27 AM) LOL.... most of us just feed catfood.... but they are after all insectivores... still need insects in their diet. Some people may say that mealworms can cause hedgehogs to die or get diseased... that is SO SO not true man.... anyway, if possible, introduce mealworms and crickets, once a week is even good too.QUOTE(Ryo` @ Oct 12 2007, 03:10 PM) Hi guys, 3 months is still young.... but do check for mites.... alot of breeders have been saying their hedgies are "mite free" but some infact come with mites. Choose your hedgie wisely too....Im getting a 3 months old salt n pepper from a breeder from garage sales, may i know roughly how big a 3 months old hedgie is? How to make sure it's 3 months old? @ Hun, Sorry Hun, can't wait for yout hoglet adi, the hedgie poison in my body too deep until i can't resist it >< Some more the price he offered is too attractive, now i just worry this is just too good to be true, lolz Dear all hedgie lovers, please advice QUOTE(broken_string @ Oct 12 2007, 03:43 PM) my hedgie escape from the toyogo box last week which prompts me to buy a new enclosure with cover for him. No wonder.... now my toyogo boxes got a DIY mesh lid.... today I did a new one but somehow my old one looks more attractive than the new one hahaha.... wrong measurement. but today when i bath it i notice there is a small wound on his body it could because he fall down after climbing up the toyogo box as i can see its a slight scratch with a little bit of swollen. what should i do ? need to apply medicine or not ? Wash it with soap and water. If the wound is dry, just let it be. Do not put any cream or antibiotic, it could make it worst. QUOTE(climacool @ Oct 12 2007, 06:00 PM) Remove seeds? You mean the fruits? Yes, most fruit seeds like apples, grapes, pear, peach and cherries are toxic and can cause death in animals. |

If hedgehog scratches alot, means mites loh.... they will only scratch alot if there are mites. Very irritating and if not cured, can cause death too.
Sometimes a hedgehog can die for many reasons, it could be some respiratory disorder, maybe liver failure? Inbreeding? Won't know until you do an autopsy.... Anyway, RIP to mochi the hedgie..... So far mine all ok (touch wood) Hope nothing happen to them. |

Look back, we already discussed how to use Frontline... You never read the 1st page?
Anyway, certain mites can cause death.... a friend's hedgie became very sick. Brought to vet, said it was mites.... next day it died.... So... it is better to prevent and treat mites fast. If you are unsure, please go to a vet that knows how to treat hedgies. I don't study zoology.... I wish I did LOL.... studying graphic design lah. Royal Canin so far is ok but there are better foods..... Acana, Go Natural, Orijen, Innova.... it just depends whether your hedgie likes it or not... |

Read here: http://www.mihog.org/anatomy/quilling.phtml Added on October 15, 2007, 9:46 pmToday Donut reached 394g.... since she has not shown signs of nesting yet, I don't think she will birth so soon. More mealworms for her hahaha. This post has been edited by crazymouse_yyh: Oct 15 2007, 09:46 PM |

QUOTE(climacool @ Oct 15 2007, 10:59 PM) Ah, so adorable.... you got 2 albinos and 1 S&P hoglet.... eyes open?QUOTE(GreenNerdy @ Oct 15 2007, 11:04 PM) Congrats to your Donut Bald spots you can see very clearly... patches of skin without quills or very little quills.... but if say your hedgehog has mites all over, he will have sparse quills.... can see alot of skin lah.anyway i read the website this afternoon, just wanna hear opinion from you guys... hao about the bald spot, i'm not sure...how big is the area normally if really got bald spot? a few mm? or a few cm? most websites i read today suggest bathing quilling hedgehog with Aveeno shampoo...anything similar to that in malaysia? "Mites are easily diagnosed by a vet. If your hedgehog is scratching a lot and appears to be losing quills in a concentrated area, you need to go to the vet and have him do a skin scraping. " - bald spot at a certain spot = mite infestation? Take a pic of your hedgie, maybe we can see if it is quilling or something else. Anyway, mites... got many type of mites... got mange mites... normal quill mites.... mange mites need a skin scraping and microscope to see, normal mites can see with your own eyes. They look like moving dust particles. |

Your hedgie got any dandruff or flaky skin?my friend took my camera away already... will take the pic once my camera is back.. thanks in advance QUOTE(climacool @ Oct 15 2007, 11:26 PM) 50% openned...hehe Red eyes with white quills albino lo.... your hedgehogs do not have snowflake gene so won't produce snowflake loh.... anyway, to determine the colours, you must check the quills, eye colouration, nose colouration, skin pigmentation, facial mask colour and also the colour of the parents.Albino...nice, but it's eyes red colour Btw, how many colour do they hav ??? i saw on the hedgehogcentral...they hav kinda alots of colour e.g: S&P, CINNAMON, Albino,CHAMPAGNE, Snowflake and many more. very confusing Correct me if i'm wrong |

Sigh... what to do? People always like to sell animals in pairs coz they attract the human emotion. We as humans are sometimes drawn to keep things in pairs....

Yah, human would know but not the animal.... The best is give a single sex pair but then again, hedgehogs love their solitary lives.... when I bred my hedgehogs, Crinkles got bitten on the ear.... is that a sign of love? No.... it's a sign of frustration by the female.... so anyone putting a pair together and think they are "happy", in truth, they are suffering.....
Go Garage Sales, can see 1 pair together, can see some bite wounds on the body.... low price yet no one wants.... |

QUOTE(bledig @ Oct 19 2007, 01:59 PM) i think i am getting the one u are talking about... Haha... I wouldn't trust such seller coz he got another username which he also use for pet sales, what is he hiding? Also, one main thing.... that seller said it bred twice... 5 months old? Seriously lying.... a hedgehog should on start breeding at the age of 6 months old and they should stop breeding once 2.5 years old. If he said he bred twice, meaning he started breeding them at 2 months old?gulp ** Look in Garage Sales for hedgehog** No linking of GS sales here even for example. but i dun really mind cause bites can heal right it looks pretty healthy yes...although with a few bites? was wondering how do we know the aged of a hedgehog actually (this one is about 5 months i was told) to me a 2 month old would looks same like 2 years old haha The male may be fine, he would have an average lifespan of 5 years but the female, because she bred at such a young age, she would have aged terribly and could have a shorter lifespan.... I know bites can heal but what I'm stressing is the right way to keep and the right way to sell. That seller is not releasing them separately, that proves just how desperate he is to get rid of them fast. Rm350 is also below market price even for adults. To know the age, you can tell. A 2 month old would fit a girl's hand nicely with still some space, small and have very thin quills.... a 5 month old would have adult quills, and it would fill up the palm fully. 5 months would have reached adult age..... From the pics, they look older and overweight. The catfood is coloured, meaning low quality food.... so you are also at risk of getting a hedgehog that may have fatty liver disease or any other ailments.... As we are hedgehog owners, we strongly advice to avoid all supermarket brands or commercial brands, stick to those that have been recommended. |
