Ah, this little hoglet I'm not gonna keep. New owner is waiting anxiously hahahah.... and patiently, thank goodness.

Hand tame hedgehogs are cuties, they are very trusting and also very curious. The hoglet loves to chew my fingers and give me licks too.

Go find out the birthdate lah.

Last time when my friend bred his hedgehogs, all his hoglets got birth certificate wan. Kinda cute. This little hoglet I got was born on Halloween's Eve.... easy to remember.

Yay, today 30 days old and is 35g.

OMG, your hedgehog got me so addicted to this topic, crap. Must...not....fall...into trap..... rclxub.gif

hahaha...

crazymouse_yyh, it's a pity your cute little hoglet's already found an owner. He/She is real lucky.

Reading all these posts made me feel like getting one myself too, but I think I'll need to check with the family first before I make any additions, right now the house is full of animals I'm afraid my mom will start screaming at me!

Anyway, I guess I'll probably get it later, perhaps early next year or so. Need to do plenty of homework in these few months if I decide to get one (man, I think I'll succumb to this lure...).

crazymouse_yyh, can I ask if it's possible to identify hedgehogs which are bred? I know there's plenty of breeders here selling, but I'm just wondering if we can find any hoglets at petshops which are bred.

Thanks in advance.

Yeah, I would've assumed that petshops rarely sell reliable pets since they're all about the money...

Perhaps I can look for you when I'm ready to get one... tongue.gif

Just out of curiosity, the mealworms you give to your hedgehogs as snacks, do you breed them yourself or you keep stocking up from petshops?

Oatmeals?

I thought I read somewhere you can feed these mealworms leafy vegetables and they'll be fine.

And yeah, I think it's pretty sore for the eyes too if you breed mealworms in the house, haha, but in a way it's saving a bit of cost here and there since you won't have to feed it so often.

Just a question, how come most hoglets for sale are usually males?

I'm thinking if I'm going to get one, I would prefer a female, but I don't see a lot of people having female hoglets...

Salt & pepper looks beautiful... smile.gif

Coz the breeders keep the females to breed more hedgehogs. Well, I don't hahaha....
*
Hahaha, yeah, that's the reason I wanna get a female one too. But if someone volunteers to help me breed i won't mind getting a male... brows.gif

Was just thinking, hedgehog's lifespan doesn't even exceed 10 years, if I were to have one as a pet, I wouldn't want to see it die on me after several years. At least their next generation (and next and next and next....) will still be keeping me company... tongue.gif

Yah... those fish pellet. If you don't use fish pellet, dry dogfood or dry catfood also can.
Erm.... never breed if you do not have the right intentions..... also.... hedgehogs are quite depressing to breed. A female may eat up her young, like what mine did and foster caring is never easy. Keeping it's generation.... not a very good goal for breeding. Stressed hedgehogs would not breed properly, and it cannot breed after it is 2.5 years old but if you did not start breeding before it is 1 year old but after 6 months old, the pregnancy could be fatal and can kill a female hedgehog.... best is only 1 litter every 6 months and it involves careful planning and lots of monitoring.

For me it was never easy. And this is also why the price is high.

For my hoglet, I had to feed her every 3 hours, keep under a warm heat lamp, stimulate it to defecate... also I must make sure she doesn't get bloat and diarrhea..... so breeding should not be taken lightly lah.

Ouch, hahaha, guess I was thinking too far ahead...

crazymouse_yyh, how old are your hedgehogs? It seems like you have plenty of pets at home, I', guessing they should be quite few years old already right?

It's been very informative participating in this forum, didn't expect replies to be flooding in so fast... rclxms.gif

Is the toyogo box safe enough to be the cage for hedgehogs? Someone mentioned that their hedgies escaped from their cage by climbing out, which I find a bit weird since the boxes are quite deep...

LOL... cute yah, but got commitment to own one lah....

That little hedgie is going to her new home in another 1.5 weeks. Yay to her.
*
Hahaha, crazymouse_yyh is right, lots of commitment if you wanna get one.

That's why even though I'm so keen to get one I'm trying to refrain myself from buying until I think I'm ready for a hedgehog. And it's killing me! tongue.gif

Now doing a lot of homework, and when the timing's right I'll get back to one of the breeders here in the forum, hehehe...

Yah, do your homework, then sure will be a great experience and a great pet for you. Last time I searched high and low to find my first hedgie, learned alot  from the internet, and most alot of my own experience coz 2 years ago, nobody keep hedgehogs openly....
*
Yes, yes, my sifu... tongue.gif

I think with my hard work and commitment sooner or later I can convince crazymouse_yyh to let me adopt one of her hedgie as a reward, ahhahahaha...

Just joking... brows.gif but when I already get one you may expect to be bombarded with lots of questions... biggrin.gif

i have no luck getting the hedgehog in the adoption thread..
dont have enough knowledge and experience as i only read this forum about hedgehog..maybe i'm not meant to have a hedgehog. lol
*
well, it's good that you tried, perhaps now you know you have to do more reading before you get one, good luck to you...smile.gif

btw, i was in butterworth last week and saw a few hedgehogs for sale, didn't bother to check the price, but those little fellas were pretty sad, all clumped up in a small plastic box (i think there were 5-6 hedgies there). some adults and some hoglets, they don't look very healthy.

one of it got its head stuck inside the food in the tray and it's motionless, i was wondering if it's dead...

btw, happy holidays people!

holy crap, he managed to feed a wild porcupine and feel its tummy? No ways, the ones in my kampung are vicious!
methinks it might be an 'escaped' hedgehog!
*
hahaha, yeah, i think it's a bit unlikely too to feed and feel a wild porcupine...wink.gif

but escaped hedgehogs are kinda rare too, isn't it?

yeah, i'm guessing someone in your neighbourhood must've lost it, considering it's not native here. how often can you find a long-eared hedgehog wandering outside your house, moreover in a country where we don't really see any of this species?

hope your hedgehog brings you lots of luck!:)

yesterday i saw some hoglets on sale at irene's aquarium in seapark (i was scanning for tortoises but saw hedgehogs there as well).

they're selling the little ones at RM250, but from what i see the hoglets aren't even 2 inches long yet, i'm guessing they're just about 3-4 weeks old the most.

and worst of all, they're feeding the them rabbit pellets and cabbages.

such a sad case when we see these petstores trying to make crazy profits out of these pitiful little creatures.
