There is much discussion between how much blame is attributed to the manager vs the players. And that can be hard to split as so many things are inter-related.
Let's look at a definite from the player perspective. Regardless of how bad other factors are, there is one factor that is solely up to the players for input.

Work rate.

Let's define work rate. Work rate is not running around like a headless chicken. It has to do with optimal positioning.
Your optimal position changes when in transition. When your team loses the ball, your optimal position changes as you need to adjust into defensive transition. How fast you make up the difference between Position A and Position B is determined by work rate. Your willingness to sprint and get into the optimal position. Having players with low work rate in your team means the team is more vulnerable in transition as the opposition has a longer period of time to exploit the defensive structure.

Are Manchester United players full of passion and determination to show work rate? Here is the Southampton manager in his press conference after the game.

This is clear evidence that some players are not putting in the necessary effort on the pitch while saying they give 110% to the club on social media. Do you know what the opposite type of player is? Committed but not good enough. Dan James. Obviously doesn't have the ability at United's level but always willing to put in the work rate to make sure his flank is never exposed. That is why manager's like players like this.


So when I say United players are frauds on social media who don't give 100% in matches, this is what I mean.

Ole is gone. McKenna who was criticised by the players is gone but is doing very well at Ipswich. He took over with them in a bad spot in 12th, and he's somehow won 6 out of the last 8 for them. VDB is gone and doing very well at Everton. When VDB plays for us, some players don't seem to want to pass to him even he if makes those runs. defensive stats for a DM of course. My only gripe is on the tactical need for him to fall in to the defensive line while defending but that is on the tactics and not on him.

Stats wise, i would say top 10% or even 5% in PL as a CDM.
