Aren't all strings standard? I thought for a headless bass you just string it upside down. No?

You need double-ball end strings for headless basses ... there're no conventional machines heads to wrap them around ... hard to find here, maybe in s'pore ...
Added on June 27, 2008, 10:07 amBTW, this is TOMORROW! BASS & FRENZ DAY
June 28 (Sat), 5-8pm Wisma Bentley (3rd Floor) Mutiara Damansara, PJ
Calling all musicians, come jam, bring your friends, get specials deals on a range of music gear and accessories. Bentley Music has given us a place to let our collective music hair down for the evening, so let’s do it!
All gear provided by Bentley Music, so there’s no need to bring your own. If you must, it has to be Bentley-distributed stuff like Fender, Ibanez, Marshall, Ibanez, Digitech, etc.
See you there. Queries to 012-3094001

Any suggestions for a guitarist who wants to learn some bass and looking for a cheaper bass? Checked out a few Yamaha (RBX174, 274 and 374) and Ibanez (GSR200FM, SRX300).. Ask me anything about guitar and I'll know but bass... 4 string, 5 string?... active, passive... argghhh... I'm lost!!

I still hold true to my philosophy for beginners of getting the cheapest bass you can find regardless of brand and sound and quality. Only thing to look for is a smooth neck and fretboard so you don't get splinters in your fingers when you play.
The cheaper the better.

Yeah but won't you want to change gear when you get better so isn't it better to get like a low-mid range axe so you won't upgrade in like 1-2 months? Any recommendations of models other than the ones I tested? Btw, heard the Squires have electronics issues and the Ibanez/Yamahas are more reliable. Have you guys found that to be true?

in my opinion, start off with a low range guitar but not too low untill you don't feel like playing that piece of wood. this way, you will feel more motivated by being able to "upgrade" to a better guitar, kinda like rewarding yourself for improving
