Yeah but won't you want to change gear when you get better so isn't it better to get like a low-mid range axe so you won't upgrade in like 1-2 months?  Any recommendations of models other than the ones I tested?

*
Well, i guess i'm speaking for myself. I've bought lot's of things only to find out that i'm not really interested after all. So i have plenty of things lying all over the place. Just trying to save you some money. A cheap brandless bass doesn't necessarily have to sound bad. And if it does and you find out "Hey bass is quite cool after all" then upgrading it (even after 2 months) won't be such a problem since you didn't spend that much money on it after all.

I still hold true to my philosophy for beginners of getting the cheapest bass you can find regardless of brand and sound and quality. Only thing to look for is a smooth neck and fretboard so you don't get splinters in your fingers when you play.

The cheaper the better.

that's a good start, but im kinda into getting beginners to start with the lower-midrange items instead of complete beginner stuff.
that way when they improve they wont have to blast more cash to upgrade for something more suiting to their current ability.

that only applies if you're dead ass serious about taking up the instrument though laugh.gif

So what is a good cheaper bass for a beginner in terms of brand and model? The saleperson is also asking me to get a 5 string instead of a 4 but isn't it harder to learn?

Don't think so. Go hardware store better.

Well low end branded instruments (example yamaha low end BBs or ibanez sdgr) cost more than most brandless ones and sometimes sound worse than them too. There is no particular brand i'd recommend because i believe in testing out to see if i like the sound or not. But if i were you, i wouldn't spend more than RM500 on one. But that's also because i'm just plain broke.

A 5 string is not harder to learn than a 4 string. And many many times the low B comes in very very handy (because of idiot vocalists who have to transpose because they can't hit the notes tongue.gif ). My advice is to get a 5 string. But i personally wouldn't because i'm a 4 string purist tongue.gif. Although i am looking for a 6 or 7 string now. Ok i'm done contradicting myself now... rclxub.gif

I'm not a big fan of anything more than 4 strings on a bass, but read bolded text for the only reason i support him laugh.gif

well i guess u could get a 4 string and tune it BEAD. You won't be needing the G so often when starting out. Even nowadays i rarely use the G

Was in Guitar Collection the other day and the guy was recommending this LTD one. RM990 I think. Of course, he could play and appreciate it and it was a passive one too.

Active or passive? What's the dif?

The main difference is active is more transparent and volume and tone are independent of one another. Passive instruments tend to change their tonal characteristics when you adjust the volume knob on the bass. This effect is however not to be seen as a minus point. In fact many people go after passive basses just because of this effect. All depends on music style and taste. There is no general rule that active is better than passive. Any salesman who tells you that doesn't know anything.

Thanks for the explanation bro. Really appreciate your feedback. I did notice that Fenders are still pretty much passive basses and are used by many many bands on the planet!

Guess budget wise, I'm looking at something sub RM1k and so far, the Yamaha RBX270 and Ibanez GSR200FM have caught my attention. Will try some others later during the weekend, I hope. Not much choice in Malaysia unfortunately... so was wondering if things are cheaper in Singapore? Probably the variety of models is better there?

Welcome my friend. Maybe you have some advice for a newbie like me on what axe to get for a beginner (though I've played guitar for quite a while now). Cheers! smile.gif

i play both passive and active and now i am slanted towards passive more, the active bassist signals might get too hot and screw up my sound when it goes thru the pedalboard. Passive wins for me right now.

yes and singapore got very nice basses, extremely nice basses for all soft of budgets and are so much cheaper than most stores in KL but Yamaha store the prices are reasonble and carries almost the same price tag in singapore so buying a yammy stuff guarantee not heart pain when u see the price different from sg to kl, but bear in mind you get what you pay for. LTD's are good, Fender Squier are great. not sure abt how u like it when u play it, ultimately u need to pick one up and test it 1st and see how u confortable with the neck, weight, bass contour, test playing standing up and sitting down. a lot of difference.

There's a cheap RM300 Smarvo one in The Guitar Store. Ok for 4 string but when testing a 5 string, the sound became distorted...

Emm... hopefully I'll have a chance to test something this weekend. Your comments ahve made me think again about the Yamaha ones... since going down to SG already costs RM100-200... and not to mention the tax coming back.. sigh...

I don't know but should b around 15W, 8 inch speaker type. Enough for home jam only but at that price, one can't complain I guess!
