those are drumming rudiments xD Had to learn them at some point.

Learning the random and odd timings off marching snare rudiments is interesting, because it adds a zest to your sound and give you more options when playing.

rudiments just plainly mean basic elements. In the drumming/rhythmic world it's singles, doubles, paradiddles, triplets...etc. Basically timing and stuff to do with timing and timing patterns.

In the harmonic world rudiments are like scales, arpeggios, intervals etc. Melodic stuff.

And in the bass world, it would be pretty much a combination of both. Practicing those boring 8th notes with a metronome, shuffle grooves, straight grooves, odd grooves, chromatic scales, whole tone scales, arpeggios, chordal inversions...the list goes on.

So if you have nothing else better to play and still feel like playing the bass, then do rudiments. Never hurts. Although really really boring

actually i do bang around occasionally on the drums and to be quite honest it's the hardest thing i've ever done. Or tried to do. When you try to control your attack with those sticks it's quite hard because they're so long. Bassists have it easy only having to control their fingers or a pick tongue.gif laugh.gif

I think the key to practicing is to relax. Don't even bother trying to build up speed. Speed comes naturally when you have all those muscles trained and controlled. I've never practiced above 100bpm before. The only time i turn the metronome up is to test myself on how fast i can go. But the real practice takes place at 100bpm and most of the time even slower about 60 or so.

And now i've totally gone back to stone age with my bass playing because of neglecting rudiments. So busy with other stuff *sigh*... mad.gif
So don't neglect your rudiments, it could be disastrous to your playing.
