QUOTE(soonwai @ Apr 8 2021, 12:36 AM) I'm using Viewsonic VX3276-2K-mhd with my Mac mini. Should be no problem with the MBA. If I have time I'll hook it up to double confirm. Thanks man, I've never thought buying a monitor for Mac could be so daunting unlike buying for Windows machines - especially for M1, there's a lot of discussions about its incompatibility, fonts get blurry etc. For me buying this RM5k machine comes with many headache.

QUOTE(fuze @ Apr 7 2021, 09:10 PM) hey guys, need some recommendation on getting an external display for MBA M1. any monitor that works perfectly, trouble-free for you atm? I use both a Benq EX2780Q which is a 27" 1440p 144hz refresh rate. I use the USB-C connection between the monitor and the MBA. Once in a while as well, I use the Xiaomi 34" widescreen monitor using a Display Port cable to USB-C for the MBA as well as my company's MBP. Both these monitors are about in the same price range. At the office I just the HP 24" 1080p monitor via HDMI cable.

. Fyi, ....... https://www.zdnet.com/article/how-bad-is-th...ailure-problem/ - How bad is the M1 Mac's SSD failure problem? - If your M1 Mac's SSD fails, you can't boot off an external drive, a change from past decades. Here's the problem and strategies to manage the risk. - By Robin Harris for Storage Bits | April 8, 2021 "All storage fails. The only question is when. For critical data: LOCKSS. Lots Of Copies Keeps Stuff Safe.
I've relied on daily bootable backups to keep my business running for over 15 years. But the new M1 Macs have eliminated that option. The M1 Mac SSD is a Single Point of Failure (SPOF) ...
But no more. Your M1 Mac may not boot at all if the system drive fails, external drive or no. And, as I noted earlier, all storage fails.
Locking down the boot
To keep malware off Apple Silicon macOS (& iOS), Apple is locking down the macOS boot process. The M1 boot process requires a working SSD to boot macOS. The SSD contains a Signed System Volume that is cryptographically sealed by Apple. No seal, no bootable System.
So if the internal drive on your M1 Mac fails completely, even an external bootable drive won't boot. Yep, your Mac is bricked. ..." . Looks like if the internal SSD of the M1 Macbooks fail, the laptops "change or progress" to become bricks. Maybe the only way to unbrick the laptops is by sending them to Apple for internal SSD replacement. Buy costly Apple Care.? .

Actually I never gave it any thought and wasn't aware of any incompatibility issues when I was shopping for my monitor. Then again the Viewsonic only goes up to 75Hz. Currently I have that 32" connected to my Mac mini via HDMI along with an old Dell 17" via a USBC-HDMI adaptor and a HDMI-DVI cable. The Dell only has DVI and VGA.

QUOTE(spideysam @ Apr 8 2021, 09:16 AM) How about 4K 32 or 27inch monitor??? Viewsonic have good one?? Viewsonic is cheap lah. Good is subjective. I think it's good enough. They have a 4K 32" but the panel is not IPS. The 2K one is IPS. I had planned to go look at the 4K at a shop then MCO started again so couldn't. Anyway it was above my budget so I stopped at the 2K 32", didn't look further and just ordered it from Shopee. Plenty of very affordable 1080p 27" but I find 27" too big for 1080p.

Yesterday my 4 months old M1 fail to power up, only can hear the start up chime sound and screen is completely blank. So brought it to Marina bay apple store to check, seem like the screen got issue so they said will replace for me. After i left the store i receive Apple email on the parts expected to replace, it cost as must as the laptop lol , i.e. changing the touch ID, Screen and the logic board..so basically the internal all replace... might else give me a new one...lol Never expect MBA fail on me so fast, my previous one served me yrs no issue... so guys, better backup you data frequently.

Hi all, am considering getting the 16GB RAM as a switch from windows, my work will require loading big datasets on excel, running statistical models on R, and also running javascripts to automate some work on Adobe illustrator.
However my only concern was on the app compatibility issue on M1, as there's mixed review on running Illustrator on M1 as the native version is not out yet, some people have no issue while some cant even open without crashing.
Any owners can share your thoughts or any experience running these tools on MBA? Or maybe I should just stick with windows for my use case? Much appreciated!

It seems Parallels just released the latest that software that support M1 Macbook. You may refer link below:- https://www.parallels.com/pd/general/?gclid...F4aAjveEALw_wcB

There are features on Windows version of Excel that are not available on MacOS version yet e.g. power pivot. No PowerBI too. Some people here commented before that Mac version of Excel doesn’t handle big Excel files as well as Windows machines.

Ya I read about that too, but was thinking it’s easier to find a workaround for that as compare to illustrator, thanks for the heads up still QUOTE(gizmodo @ Apr 15 2021, 12:25 PM) It seems Parallels just released the latest that software that support M1 Macbook. Currently am working with 2 windows laptops actually which I use interchangeably, need to let go one of it recently and am considering maybe I could get something diff this time ie a MacBook, but seems like it’s the switch is not quite viable at the moment Thanks for your suggestion, will look into it

Much appreciated! if u are still heavily rely on windows, my suggestion is still to get a intel based mac. I am in the same situation too, therefore i just got my intel based refurbished i3 mac mini 2018, the price is the same as m1 mac mini 2020. however, it is the only solution now. there is arm based technical preview version of windows now that could be run using virtualisation software such as parellel but the experience will not be same. i will wait till there is more promising arm based solution of mac before i purchase one.
