QUOTE(un_id @ Mar 17 2021, 09:43 PM)
Hey guys.. i’ve been not keeping up with mac or other brand laptops for many years, my 15” macbook pro has serve me very long.. but its due time for a major upgrade.. i’ve been looking for verious brands, initially thought that i might find something better elsewhere... but then again i started to read about praises on the M1 apple chip.. so, please advise me on few questions below. But first, i’m going to spec to highest end laptop possible, with budget cap up to RM15k.

1. Is the M1 macbook a big deal? Is there any other powerful laptop brand to compete this within my budget?
2. Between M1 and i9 macbook pro (top spec) which one to go?
3. I realize macbook air now having similar spec to macbook pro.. how to even choose between them? If macbook air is as powerful as the pro, then the air is a better choice because its lighter and more portable?

Any advise will be appreciated and thanks in advance

What are you going to use your laptop now for? What sort of applications do you plan on running? These would definitely give us a better view so we can give some of our opinions.

Today I found out an issue, the simplified chinese input keep not responding after turning on my MacBook.. This caused the system freeze and i need to force restart to resolve it.

Anyone got this issue before?

If you use Excel, it's slow as molasses for big files. Not just on M1, Intel too. So now there are 2 things that you would get a PC for, games and Excel. smile.gif

I think your freeze is caused by something else, I never had any issue with Chinese input.

Then I wouldn't recommend the M1 Macs as the software used for it isn't exactly optimised (I am just assuming as you didn't answer my question on apps, unless you work mainly with Jupiter notebooks and Python). My data scientists at work all stick to desktop PC's instead as they offer better performance and they seem a little bit more familiar with Windows.

But if you are set on getting the M1 Mac, the performance are great especially if you use these tools (still not fully supported on Apple Silicon)

Perhaps the true answer is - don't use Excel, or perhaps use it together with Power Query and Power BI.

I get around this by hosting my own VM's to handle Windows workloads and RDP'ing into them. That's how you enjoy the best of both worlds. smile.gif

Lot’s of issues. I buy total 3 units of M1 Macbook Air M1, returned 2 of them. One having battery issue, and one faulty camera after few weeks of use. Don’t bother to repair, get new and ask for refund for faulty unit.

Mine happened to freeze randomly previously when launching apps/files and also when savings my data. Its was still in MacOS 11.1 back then.
After the updates to later versions, this issue did not reoccur anymore.

Not to be rude, but may i ask, where u buying ur units from?
As far as i know, Malaysia have no refund policy.
We can only opt for warranty coverage for repairs/replacement.

Can anyone share your experience using Microsoft Office applications on M1? Particularly Excel and Power Point.

A bit disappointed to learn that the Mac version does not have Power Query and Power BI.

Any file compatibility issues when exchanging files between Windows and Mac?

I do consider LG Gram before. But I just can't resist Macbook Air M1. If I want to use Windows, I just do to my desktop. tongue.gif

No file compatibility issues. The rest you've already mentioned.

If you need the best out of Excel, stick with Windows or run it in a VM. I have that but I haven't touched it since I shifted those workloads to online platforms. I prefer to have my work be platform agnostic. I use Zoho Analytics but i've also toyed with Google Data Studio.
