i am some one who don't like blackbox solutions that i don't have understanding about. or worst, no control over.

what's this pfsense? i never used it.

what's if i install rhel-variant or debian-variant and configure everything from scratch. will that be better or worst than -whatever-?

those lazada/shopee mini pc with multiple (claimed) 2.5Gbps. running on intel celeron etc.

are they powerful and stable to be turned into ultra router?

i'm waiting to see what "token of appreciation" is first. if really getting 2.5Gbps BTU, then this will be sweet.

Open your PC, download the ISO and virtualize it under any VM and give it a try

And pfSense and OPNSense is based on FreeBSD, not Debian, I guess you can try to work with a Linux based router and tinker your way up but why do that when an open source alternative already exist

Proxmox, and virtualization

Pre-made boxes are nice but I want more power and more control over my hardware and do whatever I want.

Mikrotik is no way in shape or form bad by any means, just not for me. Another reason why I'm currently just using OPNSense virtualize on my homelab

Sounds like you are enterprise grade user, I just pretending to be in prosumer segment tongue.gif

I guess almost anything is possible with Linux if you have the know how to harden the OS and configure the services/features that you wanted. IPFire is debian based. You could check it out.

Yes i do have a coupled, using this mini pc for load balance since 2018, i have celeron j3160 (4x gb lan).. 4series celeron with (6x gb lan) and now 6 x 2.5gbps lan for 5 series celeron with 32Gb ram (running proxmox / exsi 8) .. it’s indeed powerful, have been using with mikrotik router os.. openwrt .. pfsense.. opnsense ..vyos.. ubuntu .. ads block, pihole.. unify controller, omada controller .. etc in vm or direct..

Now Using with xdi zte with media converter 2.5Gbps for my unifi for few month already, thinking to try tp-link with sfp (ER8411), but vefore that need to be sure … which direct sfp xpon (unifi compatible) can be use.. in this router

If you like to explore this x86 box i think it a good learning curve.. plenty of documentation on configuration

When new 2Gbps subscriber apply, TM change OLT card to more *capable*, I not sure it's 10G/XGS/XG PON ready, this make TM hold back and keep giving D-Link until it's ready... This is OLT Id changed to 0x00

TM wont give 2.5GbE GPON ONT at the moment except Skyworth ONT for Maxis

If you remember, I having struggle to achieve 1Gbps upload with GPON from Poland, also DPN-FX3060V modded facing same upload issue.

I feel more about OLT TDM schedule issue

To way I went to 2Gbps user within Seremban, I can do many test while I am there

First, I test VSOL V2802RH
user posted image

It did not work, the VLAN from OLT never get bridged...

If you refer to this post, 2 Gbps User A and B has different Port Provisioning...

2 Gbps User A is Huawei
2 Gbps User B is Nokia/Alcatel-Lucent, Fiberhome, ZTE

only work with OLT provision 2 Gbps User A style

The 2 Gbps User B style is most common due to Maxis, Celcom, DiGi, other ISP riding TM Fiber... blame them? brows.gif

Second, I tested TP-Link Deco that has SFP
user posted image

TP-Link Deco SFP doesnt understand it, cannot get PPPoE even in 1G mode,
thus TP-Link Deco doesent understand (X/Q/Hi/SG)MII Standard, only works Base-T

tldr; TP-Link Deco SFP cannot use GPON ONU SFP

MII Standard (Common use on non Ethernet Frame such as xDSL ATM Frame which same GPON use)
1Gbps: SGMII
2.5Gbps: HiSGMII (2x SG Lane)
5Gbps: QSGMII (4x SG Lane)
10Gbps: XGMII (XAUI)

Base-T Standard (Twisted Pair)
1000MBase-T (1G)
2.5GBase-T (2.5G)
5GBase-T (5G)
10GBase-T (10G)

Base-X Standard (Fiber Ethernet Frame)
1000Base-X (1G)
2500Base-X (2.5G)
...

the SFP communication can be anything, not all
that is why Mikrotik to support MII is by disable Auto Negotiate
Ubiquiti, Aruba and Others should do that!

82599 won't work, broadcom cards are the only one known to work at the moment. Mellanox/Solarflare etc all are not known to work at all atm

Not sure about premade routers and prebuilt a but I found a x86 box (Lenovo M910x) for about 1.2k MYR on Xianyu for sale that has the ability to take a 8x card in a 16x slot.

One of the config includes BCM57840(Quad port SFP+ card, 4 port variant of the BCM57810S) which has support for HiSGMII. If you’re looking into still running x86, might be a viable option to invest in. Low profile, low power requirements and SFF as well

I’m planning to buy this during Dec, and run 1 GPON stick, 1 10GBe, 1 2.5GBe and 1 1GBe with the 4 SFP+ ports, with “low temps” Aquantia transceivers as my main router box whistling.gif

If you’ve used Taobao, you should be able to just log in directly with Taobao and buy the item to ship to a reshipper.

I’ll purchase one during Dec to test and will post when i do nod.gif

Normally mini PC all use Mellanox/82599 cards, I have yet to see any of them using Broadcom cards and Broadcom/Qlogic is the only ones I see that supports HiSGMII

They should make Multi-Gig SFP+ mini PC

I manage to fix upload issue on my GPON Stick from Poland.

What I do, instead of using OLT Provisioned OMCI FwdOp,
I override what OLT is set from 0x10 to my custom set 0x02

this make GEM port bridge as is without any Pbits/traffic scheduler,
so, I just max out the upload. This could potentially disturb neighborhood internet

this kind a dangerous, if they check my FwdOp is different, sure TM wants me to revert back

I just reboot the stick since this not persistent setting, only my xPON firmware can save FwdOp across reboot
