82599 won't work, broadcom cards are the only one known to work at the moment. Mellanox/Solarflare etc all are not known to work at all atm
*
thanks

looks like these mini pcs are impossible to use for pfsense with the sfp onu then cos all intel

probably need some sff dell optiplex with pcie slots and use the broadcom card

Normally mini PC all use Mellanox/82599 cards, I have yet to see any of them using Broadcom cards and Broadcom/Qlogic is the only ones I see that supports HiSGMII
*
82599 even if its SPF+ ports and not ethernet ports also cannot support right?

No, 82599ES A.K.A. X520-DA2 won’t work with 2.5GBe
If you can find one, I can only find them on eBay to import through GSP/3rd party reshipper from US to Malaysia

someone in the comments section said he had to go with 4x1g pcie max with this as there was insufficient cooling for a 4x10g card

QUOTE
I tried with 4X10gbe card, the lan card required active cooling.

Success, now time to figure out how to pass through voice VLAN to my opt ports

Broke the 940mbps limit, not quite 1Gbps but my network is not quiet, will test again with no active network devices on it later

Just broke it, ready for 2Gbps upgrade tongue.gif

I just use all the default info on your GitHub page, except PLOAM password, should be fine?
Power consumption causing the 2.5G port unable to start. My Aquantia 10G/5G/2.5G/1G transceiver was causing bxe0 (My GPON port) it, removed it(bxe1) and immediately started working on bxe0
*
interesting find. means one card cannot support so many transceivers if the gpon is one of it. card issue or motherboard issue? 🤔

tq so much for the feedback. means potentially for my "ultimate pfsense router" i might need a motherboard with two pcie slot

Checked again on TB and will be purchasing another 10G transceiver (RTL8261), 1.9w approximate power consumption wise to see if BCM57810S/BCM57840 can run it beside the GPON ONU. Hopefully will be compatible but if BCM57810S has issues with two ports, the BCM57840 dream might be long gone hmm.gif
*
right now what i have in mind is 1 x bcm57810s and 1 x i226 dual 2.5g card

2 x bcm57810s seems impossible to execute because it needs a pcie x8 slot which is hard to find two of them on small motherboards

the dual i226 i saw can use pcie x1

i have an idea

what if you use the 2.5g media converter that anime4000 packages with his onu? and connect it to a normal copper rj45 transceiver in the bcm57810s. that would mean the sfp onu would be powered by the media converter right? and the broadcom card would only need to power the normal copper transceiver. would this work?

Yeah that will work as well, I think the guy does have custom solution for 2x BCM57810S and 1x 2.5GB. Or just with BCM57840
Yeah that will work as well, but IDK I feel like that’d be defeating the purpose of a small AIO. Yeah the converter is not big by any stretch of the imagination but the need for 2 separate plugs is annoying to me.

if going that route, you technically just need 2x SFP+ transceiver, 1 negotiating at 2.5GBe and 1 negotiating at 10GBe as uplink
*
got a test machine set up. somehow the sfp onu in the bcm card just doesnt work, not even when its the only transceiver installed. the card tells me link keeps going up down up down up down. in the end i replaced it with a normal copper transceiver and connected it to the sfp onu via the media converter, then it worked perfectly.

found this in github, but im not sure what patched nvram means. since it works with media converter ill just use that method

You’ll have to use DOS/UEFI to patch it with ediag, boot it up with USB and patch

https://www.dslreports.com/forum/r32230041-...a-BCM57810S-NIC

It’s just to enable 2500-BaseX since BCM57810S doesn’t support it OOTB

Also remember the power consumption issue, use low power transceivers whenever possible
*
thanks! will try later.

for now this is my speedtest result using the media converter method

i guess my area not using nokia olt as upload cannot go over 1000mbps... max around 940-960

but download can get 2100

these speedtests are run using CLI version directly inside the pfsense router as my 2.5gbps usb ethernet dongle still in the midst of shipping lol

It is very much depend on area. When I transfer my Unifi to Digi fibre 100mbps, I get 99mbps to 100mbps. Then transfered to Maxis last month, I get 92-95mbps. On Unifi it is always around 103-105mbps.

this is maxis in the same house as my unifi2gbps plan, maxis is 800/200 plan

Good for you can get +100%. Did they pull seperate line for your 2gbps?
i've had two lines and two ONU in my house for a few years now. maybe this is no longer possible with the latest rules. last time when i subscribed both maxis and unifi 800mbps they decided not to share one ONU and pull an extra one for the second 800mbps line. im not sure how the "ports" work but i guess theres excess capacity on my road, the green box thing only has to serve like 8 houses.

tried to run speedtest on both the 2gbps unifi and 800mbps maxis at once, to see how the pfsense router cpu would take processing 2800mbps of pppoe.

result - cpu usage spiked to around 45% usage.

the pfsense router is using pentium gold g7400 cpu.

if you have 10G LAN, try create PPPoE Server then iperf two end points, see how PPPoE client use CPU

sadly i got no 10G capable client side yet at the moment 🥲 only 10G on the router and switch

I should be able to fully move into dedicated machine for router with just single BCM57810s or a modified M910x biggrin.gif
here's something new i found

if you use this

the dual/quad port broadcom 10g pcie card would have to hang off the side externally haha
