btw why are these cheaper than the dell xps?

They seem higher spec too. And some even give windows pro...

The dell latitude really catches my attention. Can't understand why it's cheaper than xps

XPS is Dell's answer to premium laptop market like Macbook of Apple. Its generally more concentrate on the lightness, style and premium experiences than performance and functionality.

In short, its specifically designed for ppl who want a Macbook-ish laptop that run on Windows.

On the other hands, those Thinkpad and Latitude lines of laptops are meant for business or corporate markets. Their main focus will be on stability and durability.

For your requirement, a Thinkpad X395 is the perfect solution to you, but you just missed the CITIBANK partnership sale which lower its price down to 3.1k-ish. There's still a chance that there will be more sales upcoming, so do keep an eye arounds if youre interested in X395.

Best bang for buck rn is probably Legion Y7000 SE (9750H+1660Ti/2060, 16GB RAM, 1TB HDD+1TB SSD, 144Hz, Intel 9560). Or Level51 Forge 15 Pro. Commandos Glock 5+ is cheap, but it only has i5 (i7 upgrade is expensive) and need to add another 8GB RAM (for dual channel)

Note that for Forge 15 Pro and Glock 5+, you need to go to their stores to try out

may i know why forge 15 pro need to be try out at their store?i thought can purchase online right?

Hi Sifus, I need laptop recommendation for programming. I have read some source that good programming laptop is either Dell Latitude or Lenovo Thinkpad. But quite confuse with the model, which one I should take.

1. Budget : RM3k - RM5k
2. Usage : Programming.
3. Requirements : Robust is more important to me, no need nice design or can be flipped.

Another thing, is modern laptop able to customize with 2 different HDD? Example, 1 HDD is SSD, for main boot. And another is normal HDD for storage. I saw in Lenovo's site, cannot customize to have 2 HDD.

Hi, My friend need a suggetion for a laptop that capable of doing 3D rendering such as Vray and Lumion for Architecture studies.

1. Budget : RM5k-6k
2. Usage : 3D Modelling and Rendering
3. Requirements : 16GB ram, 256GB ssd, and at least GTX1060, 15" laptop

Battery size, weight doesn't bother, as long as it can meet the requirements is enough.

With 1660Ti/2060:
Acer Predator Helios 300 PH315-52-794X / 76CQ
Lenovo Legion Y740 15 81HE007EMJ
Lenovo Legion Y540 15 81SX004XMJ, 81SX004WMJ; Lenovo Legion Y7000 SE 81NS0021MJ / 81T00021MJ
Level51 Forge 15 Pro
Commandos Glock 5 Alpha
Commandos Glock 5 Plus 144Hz
Level51 Forge 15 Elite: low sRGB 120Hz

Use code LENXCIMB (CIMB card):
Lenovo Legion Y740 15 customize
Lenovo Legion Y540 15 customize / Y7000 SE customize

Thin and light with GPU Boost (aka Eluktroboost):
Illegear Onyx
Illegear Prodigy
Illegear Raven SE-R

Best value for now IMO is Y7000 SE with promo code (9750H+1660Ti/2060, 16GB RAM, 1TB HDD+1TB SSD, 144Hz IPS, Intel 9560, 2yr onsite)

Note that not all laptops are perfect, let me know after deciding so that I can tell you the pros and cons

fuhhh, so many choices, I'm wondering why are MSI laptops aren't in the list. My friend did mentioned that all of his friend was using either MSI or Asus laptops.
and regarding Lenovo laptops, my sister did used one before, I think it was a Y700/Y500. The build was a bit fragile sweat.gif

Overpriced, moreover low end line don't have good build quality

MSI/Asus not equal to good, despite their popularity in gaming laptops. The reason I didn't include Asus models here is because of their poor QC+QA in laptops

Build quality depends on model. Y540 has decent build while Y740 has excellent build

Assumption need to bring up db (oracle or mongodb), app server (weblogic), open ide, browser with multiple tab. Not sure this req needed powerful cpu or not.

Weight is doesnt matter. Battery if not in highload, need 3-5 hours.

Pros: Decent build quality+cooling, decent input devices, decent audio quality, optional 144Hz, OK battery life (with Hybrid mode on), MUX (can turn on/off Optimus, if off you'll get max GPU performance), onsite warranty

Cons: Red accents, heatsink quality can be hit or miss, new BIOS slightly reduces fan speed (though not a big issue from what I see)

Y740 has more premium+slightly sturdier build, but keyboard layout+typing feel are worse. Has per key RGB. Slightly better cooling compared to Y7000 SE despite slightly thinner. Newer BIOS reduced 90W GPU TDP to standard 80W and slightly reduced fan speed

For Y7000 SE, see above

Prefer regular laptop or gaming laptop?

If you want something robust, might want to consider business grade laptops

15% student discount. Though sometimes you can get more discount with promo codes (20% LENXCIMB - need CIMB card). Not sure about Illegear and Level51 but I think Level51 got RM1000 rebate
