Here are all the good/excellent Ultrabook/regular/business laptops you can buy.

How I rate these laptops:
Build quality first. Battery life second. The rest are display (HD display will be excluded except in low end options), input devices, performance, warranty and portability etc.

Imported Chinese models which are not included: Chuwi, Xiaomi

Additional info:
In general, i5 and i7 ULV don't have much performance difference due to thermal and firmware/power limitations, however CPU performance of R5 and R7 might vary between models due to difference in power limits. IMO brands only matter when comes to customer support, choose model not brand.

Thanks for reading! I hope this list helped you to choose the right laptop. Keep in mind that this is my own guide, you might not agree with some of the recommendations and I can understand that.

It's basically the same with Ideapad 330 14 which isn't a good model. Not a good choice

Just wondering why are these "NON-UPGRADABLE 4GB RAM" ?

Are these ram bundled within motherboard?

Means the ram is soldered to the motherboard and there is no empty ram slot. I think

So I’ve been contemplating to get an ultrabook below 4500. I was looking at the 14” zenbook and the Huawei Matebook 13. Currently the zenbook checks all the list but am worried about the low brightness value! Huawei checks everything too but not too sure about reliability? Any 14” ultrabooks to recommend with a GREAT screen and possibly an MX150 smile.gif?

Yes (it's included in the list), just need to be aware of unknown reliability and limited/questionable aftersales support

Good list! Just a suggestion, I think is best to also include weight and height in the listing since it is among main criteria in selecting ultrabook

Great list and effort there! thumbup.gif I actually searching similar needs for my brother going for university, asking for a lightweight laptop with RM2k-2.5k range, with good battery life (~4 hours) and decent GPU for casual gaming. Also, he's not really fond with 15.6", saying its kinda large.

From my research, I found few as below that somehow not in your list:
- HP 14-cm0108AU (Ryzen 5 2500U, 1.55kg, 14" FHD IPS, 4GB / 1TB, RM 1939)
This is quite a good one, since with sub-2k, this machine having FHD IPS and its Ryzen 5-2500u is on par with i5-8250U based on NotebookCheck benchmark list.

- Asus Vivobook A411U-FEB143T (i5-8250U, MX130, 1.35kg, 14" FHD, 4GB / 1TB, RM 2159)
- Asus Vivobook A411U-NEB345T (i5-8250U, MX150, 1.35kg, 14" FHD, 4GB / 1TB, RM 2409)
Both Vivobook A411U are quite nice, since with just 1.35kg and below RM2.5k, I can get i5-8250 and MX130 / 150. Also comes with 14" FHD, fingerprint, and 4 USBs (1 type-C, 1x 3.0, 2x 2.0).

Of course, I will upgrade the laptop with additional RAM and SSD as main partition.

What do you think? Any other recommendation e.g. Acer Swift 3 maybe? hmm.gif

Cheapest yet well-built+good battery life so far would be Acer Swift 3 SF314-54. However I strongly suggest anyone to try out the laptop yourself if you want to grab one to get a feeling

Give a range - max weight in kg and min battery life in hours

There isn't any good 15 inch regular laptop with good sRGB display in this budget

Good question actually, I wonder why nobody asked me about this before. Yes, Dell has the best after sales service in Malaysia imo; however, most Inspiron models don't have big battery. It shouldn't be an issue at first since new Intel CPUs nowadays are very power efficient in idle/light loads; however, reviews had shown that the battery life sucks. There is a section in the list for those models with not so great battery life; however, Dell models are usually priced high. Inspiron 3000 series have mediocre build quality (best would be sturdy but feels cheap) while Inspiron 5000 series have OKish build quality (in terms of rigidity). Left Inspiron 7000 series, however they are usually expensive. Since many Inspiron 7000 series models aren't worth it imo, therefore they are not included in the list. For Vostros, I don't have enough info on other models besides 5471/5481, therefore I will not include the others for now. As I said before, different ppl will have different perspective/opinion when buying laptop, this is how I judge, yours might vary and you can ignore this list

(btw, there are still a few Dell models in the list)

Correct - Vostro is consumer rebrand (Inspiron 5000 rebrand with improved build quality I believe?)

Around 3500. Was hoping the AMD Ryzen APU concept can deliver better. But the 2019 R 3300 is a disappointment - same performance as R2500 but graphics downgraded from Vega 8 to Vega 6.

I guess its back to Intel + nVidia. Just wanted an ultraportable that I can play some games on (nothing too fancy, like Civ) while plugged in.

*
3300U is based on 2300U which is a 4c4t chip, 3500U and 2500U are 4c8t chips

Might want to increase budget to 4k unless you're fine with 14 inch

And like I mentioned, 13 inch laptops with dGPU will usually throttle

Hi Sifu, if between Lenovo Ideapad 530s and Dell Inspiron 5481 which one you recommended. According to some reviews, Lenovo quality is not as good as Dell.

I'd still prefer 13" - makes a lot of differences carrying it daily with other stuff in the bag. If bumping it to 4k, what is the best one with a decent GPU?

There are reasons why there isn't a single Surface in this list...

Thank you for this very helpful thread Bro Fong.

I would like to ask where do I even find the prices as listed? I tried Lazada/Shopee/Manufacture website all have them listed more expensive.

Specifically these models:
2539 Acer Swift 3 SF315-41G-R6Z9 - R5-2500U, 8GB, 256GB SSD, RX540, IPS

2552+ Acer Swift 3 SF314-54G-52L8 / 59WJ - i5-8250U, 4GB (upgradable), 1TB HDD+128GB SSD, MX150 (10+W), IPS

2498+ Lenovo Ideapad 330s-14IKB 81F40191MJ / 192MJ / 193MJ - i5-8250U, 4GB, 512GB, Radeon 535, IPS

Can show me where to get them at that price?

Thanks.. I found it around 4k plus at Lowyat, proposal rejected by MoF. After nego brought the new Ryzen x360 for 3350 after checking the whole place.

3350 HP Envy x360 13-AG0011AU - R5-3500U, 8GB, 256GB

Both will throttle - normal in 13 inch Ultrabook with dGPU

Exterior build wise UX333 is better, however QC wise both aren't that great

Most welcomed. But since I've looked at it, can help with some explanation on what those are?

STAPM, Fast, Slow limits are different TDP at which the CPU starts throttling right?

I am thinking, in laptop mode vs tablet mode, will x360 (or other type of convertible like Yoga) have a different power limit due to constrained cooling?

Fast limit - power limit for the first few seconds (basically useless)
Slow limit - power limit for a long duration until STAPM power reaches slow limit value
STAPM limit - power limit forever - 15w is typical especially for convertible

From what I know, you can adjust performance setting in HP Command Center so maybe you can try to play around that. If you want best performance possible, can try tuning using Ryzenadj. Also, the power limits seem to be higher than the previous Envy x360 13

If this is the case, then I change my purpose to only office tasks (Excel pivot calculations - quite heavy) and no editing.

As light as possible with good battery life.

better cooling is good to consider.

Currently I am using Surface Pro and I like it very much. But may be the cooling is not that good and the battery bengkak and I got a new from warranty claim.

Well cooling wise they are about the same...S730 will have slightly worse sustained CPU performance, UX333/UX433 will throttle heavily when CPU+GPU are loaded

Typical Surface quality...avoid them next time - don't support anti-consumer brand

The differences are the things that you can't see from spec sheet

Display quality, RAM+storage upgradability, cooling room (54G has 25w MX150, 55G has 10w MX150) - slight differences in build material and input devices too

Put aside specs - Build quality is unknown, basically everything is unknown rn since there is no reviews. Wouldn't go for it considering that most Vivobooks are mediocre

Put aside specs - Build quality is unknown, basically everything is unknown rn since there is no reviews. Wouldn't go for it considering that most Vivobooks are mediocre

Thanks sifu for the advise. Will consider other model then

No IPS display and only 30Wh, I guess it is not worth it...

I got these info from lelong...

BTW, how to check these in stores?

Hi, can you recommend a laptop with >90% srgb screen with at least i5 8300h processor and with a graphic card? Budget, below rm3.8k. I’ll be doing photo and video editing.

How I rate these laptops:
Build quality first. Battery life second. The rest are display (HD display will be excluded except in low end options), input devices, warranty and portability etc. QC and reliability are not considered, however business laptops usually have long reliability while cheaper laptops tend to have worse QC.

It's in the list. Not much info yet but should be decent based on other 3500u laptops

Should be the same chassis with SF314-54 so there's a RAM slot (4GB is soldered), max is 20GB I think

Do you have any experience dealing with acer after service? It is good enough?

I plan to buy this laptop on lazada and after that I assume I need contact acer directly if want claim warranty kan.

About the Ram, does upgrading Ram will void warranty.? Nowadays 4GB not enough lah. Manufacturer should start offer 8GB for RM2K laptop.

no, but my friend dealt with Highpoint before, not bad

there will be a sticker (probably, common in Acer laptops), just tear it down carefully and tape back after upgrading

unfortunately this is Malaysia where 4GB RAM out of the box is still a thing

can you recommend me a high sRGB display gaming laptop ranging 4000 to 4500? i need a good display for dicom interpretation, thus good colour accuracy is important but i wish to play some games too. The standard acceptable display would be macbook retina display grade but i don't like mac os. Is there any gaming laptop in that range that has display as good as macbook? or almost as good as.

lighter and longer battery life of course is preferable but then for me, maybe less than 3kg? more than 3-4hrs battery is enough for me as long as it doesnt compromise the gaming performance.. i m actually looking at gaming laptop more rather than an ultrabook.

Hi I'm looking for a laptop recommendation. I already have a gaming laptop at home which is my main workhorse. But I have been finding that the battery life is too poor. I'm looking for one that has better mobility and battery life. I use it mainly for web browsing, movie, and software development.

Preferably, 13" or 14".

In terms of feature priority, 1. Battery life(>7 hours on moderate use) 2. Performance 3. Weight(not really particular)

Currently eyeing T495, or Huawei Matebook 13. Was eyeing X395 too, but I found that I didnt like 13" in 16:9 ratio. A little too small to my taste. But 14" in 16:9 is fine. Performance-wise, doesnt have to be too high, as I still have my main laptop. Just that looking for something that it is easier to bring along as I attend seminars, workshops, or travelling. Thanks for any recommendations.

Consider business grade laptops

Thinkpad: T490 400 nits, *X390 300 nits, L390 Yoga, *X390 Yoga
Not sure about battery life - good according to users: T495 400 nits, *X395 300 nits

Latitude: 7390, 7490
If can find: 5300, 7300, 7400, 5300 2 in 1

*non-upgradeable RAM

Acer Swift 3 SF314-41 not support 16 GB RAM module, it only support 12GB RAM (4GB Onboard + 8GB). I email Acer for the confirmation, and they confirm it only 12GB.

Should I try to install 16GB RAM module or it will not work since the manufacturer has limited it?

Besides that what do you think about Acer Aspire 5 A514-52G since it not on the list? It is ok or not?

Hi, I also dont really understand the difference between Huawei matebook 13 and matebook D. The specs seem similar, with matebook D having a longer battery life and bigger screen. But it seems to be selling cheaper at RM2999. Also, the matebook D wasn't listed in the recommendations here. Could somebody explain why?

Max is either 12GB or 20GB (4+16), would suggest 4+4 (total 8GB) for dual channel though

Preferably below 3.5k. so the only advantage the matebook 13 has over the matebook D is the display and weight? Matebook D is 2018 model?

Both are 2018 models I think, Matebook D is slightly older

You can still get business grade like L490 if you don't mind low sRGB display

Actually for me the most important right now is that the battery life is good and get me through more or less a day of use.

I was reading reviews about a 2019 matebook 13. That is different from the matebook that we have in Malaysia?

L490 will do then, business grade > consumer grade

What do you mean by different?

Is there any other notebook type laptop with good battery life that comes with usb C charging? Probably looking about 3.5k price range, similar to Matebook 13-ish price.

Hi ZM Fong, can you recommend me this?

Weight = lightest
RAM= upgrabable or non upgrabable (doesn't matter)
sRGB.
Battery life= doesn't matter (the longest the matter)

Priority: able to handle 4K video editing + lightest.

Elitebook 830 G5/G6 is fine, however you might want to consider Thinkpad/Latitude also

fyi i5 ULV and i7 ULV don't have much performance difference

hi, 13.3 or 14 is just nice. anything less than or equals to 1.4kg .

battery life, as long as possible.

the only thing about thinkpad is its black and they all look the same.

latitude not sure if it now in ultrabook shape.

fell in love with the look and feel of elitebook, maybe i'm just looking for a cheaper or other alternative before making decision laugh.gif

edit: after you brought up latitude, i just found that there's a latitude 3301, dell claimed lightest 13 inchs, let me check it out

business use, not really going to play games or watch movie.

but ram must be 16gb. if 8gb with upgradeable slot is fine.

i think its hard to find ultrabook with ram slot right? mostly soldered. only this elitebook has a magical 2 slots( maybe thats why its not really light)

With upgradeable RAM (suggest upgrade by yourself):
Thinkpad P43s / T490 (~1.5kg), L390, L490
Latitude 5300 60Wh

16GB soldered:
Thinkpad T490s, T495s, X390, X390 Yoga, X395

For Latitude 7000 series you need to find reseller, online don't sell

Here are all the good/excellent Ultrabook/regular/business laptops you can buy.

How I rate these laptops:
Build quality first. Battery life second. The rest are display (HD display will be excluded except in low end options), input devices, performance, warranty and portability etc.

Imported Chinese models which are not included: Chuwi, Xiaomi

Additional info:
Usually i5 and i7 ULV don't have much performance difference due to thermal and firmware/power limitations, however CPU performance of R5 and R7 might vary between models due to difference in power limits. Also, there are 3 variants of MX150 GPU: 10W, 10+W and 25W. IMO brands only matter when comes to customer support, choose model not brand.

Thanks for reading! I hope this list helped you to choose the right laptop. Keep in mind that this is my own guide, you might not agree with some of the recommendations and I can understand that.

1 upgradeable generally tops at 16GB the most, except for special case like MSI PS42, heard that it can upgrade to 32GB on its only slot.

While for the case of 2 soldered, I won’t settle for anything less than 16GB in total. Plain 8GB is gonna get obsoleted in near future at the rare smartphones getting their RAM bigger and bigger each years. Many premium ultrabooks charge >RM500 to upgrade from 8GB models to 16GB models, that’s their market strategy.

There’s a popular market practice nowadays of 4GB soldered + another module slot. This one is as bad as single channel single module in first case in the first scenario, but if it’s sub RM2k budget computer, I won’t complain much. For those 3k plus PC like L340 Gaming, that’s just plain stupid.

Warranty too short, SSD and RAM too small for a device you’re paying almost 5 grands for.

Also, the 10th gen in this model is actually not much different from 8th gen. These are just overclocked and rebranded 8th gen.

True 10th gen is still too low yield, that’s why it’s only inside few ultra premium devices for the time being z

Why not? You certainly won’t like to utilise your memory >90% when you’re working around with your PC. 8GB is nothing after few programs running in the back or few pages of webs on browser.

Even smartphones are hitting over 10GB RAM in 2019, the requirements will only grow upwards, not stagnant.

Eventhough for the moment Thinkpad isn’t under Citibank CCS 45% offer, I will say no harm waiting for few more days and see if they decide to include them later on. The sales should last till 6th October, don’t need to be too rush, especially on Thinkbook (except may be you interested and value the 10,000 AirAsia big points, then Thinkbook got the edge). The price of Thinkbook had been like that since months ago.

P/S: Thinkbook don’t support USB-C PD charging, which I consider quite a dealbreaker especially for thin ultrabooks.

At the moment no thinkpads on sale.

For other brands, may be dell vostro you can get it for cheap and have an overall complete package, namely upgradable RAM and USB PD su
