on another note, dual-channel ram solved my problem i guess.

initially was having occasional stutters and massive fps drops in teamfights and big spells being used when playing dota2 in max settings..

now after adding the other 8gb stick, seems to have solved it. not sure if its due to dual-channel or just more ram in general. but i thought 8gb would suffice for dota2, no other apps were open and only 2-3 chrome tabs..

anyway before this, my fps in main menu was about 180 ish, now its 220~230.

and in games it used to be:
- when just loaded and entered a match: around 120 fps and then drops off to about 90~100 fps once the creeps come out.

- then during laning stage last hit denies fps about 70~90.
- during big teamfights and many aoe spells used, it can drop to about 40+ fps and makes it laggish.

now when loaded and enter a match i get around 160 fps. when creeps come out about 140~150 fps.
and laning stage is about 120 fps, teamfights still able to maintain 100+ fps..
but i only tested it on 1 match so far with the upgraded ram.

will have to play more games to find out the real average fps improvements.. but overall right now im happy with such a huge improvement with the ram upgrade. before this i was quite upset that the i5 + 1060 card was stuttering on dota2.. was wondering like whats wrong with my system even..

Yeah dual channel RAM makes a difference especially with CFL-H CPUs. Dunno why. Great upgrade though! I also added another 8GB to my Y530

Got my machine yesterday and am now putting it though it’s paces. Might redo the thermal paste anyways for better OCing

Screen = Bezel really thick. A lot of light bleed. Definitely didn't like it.
Keyboard = It has pretty lights which I find stupid. I would have rather them taken the keyboard from the Thinkpad X/T line (legendary keyboards on those!)
Audio = Pretty good for a laptop, also has a subwoofer which makes the audio acceptable.
Build Quality = Good all around, except the screen hinges, flimsy.
Thermal Management = Extremely good. Even with OCing, 72 degrees Celsius tops!
Add ons = Not much bloatware which is very good. If you want it you have to DL yourself
Ports = I like the back facing ports, makes cable management easy
Misc = Didn't like the 2.5 inch drive bay, would have rather used the space for extra cooling or batt power and another M2 slot

Can show a screenshot of the bleeding? And how or what tool you use to test for bleeding?

for the screen, turn off adaptive brightness mode in windows10 if you havent already.
but thats mainly for brightness and colour fluctuations in windows.
but it still helps with lightbleed i think. cause my first few days using it with adaptive brightness, when i do light bleed test on pure black background i was getting quite a lot of light bleed and its obvious like you said..
however after turning adaptive brightness off, the light bleed is no longer obvious and fell back to acceptable range..
my guess is because pure black background and adaptive brightness mode turned on, so the computer detects it as such and overcompensates by pumping in more backlight

and yes for the bloatware i agree. the only bloatware i got in my y530 was the mcafee AV.
windows 10 itself makes up the majority of the bloatware. so good job on lenovo for that.

Is it worth to spend extra few k for Y740 instead of Y540?
RGB is not my thing, and I hardly play games now, and for sure I won't OC my machine.
The reason I am considering this machine is because I need to do some heavy development and I run a lot of programs at the same time.
Or is there any alternative? I'm also looking into Thinkpad T-series and P-series, but unfortunately they don't have a powerful GPU.

we dont know the price of y540 yet..

unless you mistaken for y730 and y7530.

well the attraction of y730 over the y530 is:
- built material (aluminium body)
- better thermal cooling performance (but y530 is also decent)
- RGB
- thunderbolt 3.

see whether you need i5 or i7 processor.

since you say youre doing heavy development i would think the i7 is more suitable for you right?
and since gaming is a non-factor, they both come with 1050ti anyway.

if youre going for i7 + 1050ti, the y730 cost only about 300 more over the y530. in that case then i would say it depends on you whether the above i mentioned is enough to justify that difference.

if youre going for i5 + 1050ti, the y730 cost about 1k more than the y530. in that case i would say save the 1k and get the y530..

but take note, on lenovo site it says now y530 shipping period is 6-8 weeks and y730 4 weeks. doh.gif

Thanks for the reply.
I am speculating the price difference to be in 2k MYR at least.
Here what's taken from lowyat.net article.
"
Prices for the Lenovo Legion Y540 starts from US$929.99 (~RM3827). The company says it will be available starting May 2019, though chances are that we’ll have to wait a little longer before it’s made available in Malaysia.

The Lenovo Legion Y740 models, on the other hand, will be made available a little bit earlier, from February 2019. Prices for the 15.6-inch model starts from US$1749.99 (~RM7194), while the larger 17.3-inch laptop will have prices starting from US$1979.99 (~RM8140). But again, these are not the dates and prices for our market, and we’ll have to wait for an official announcement by Lenovo Malaysia.
"

- built material (aluminium body) - Might have to look at the real laptop to tell the difference, but it's not a big deal for me I guess.
- better thermal cooling performance (but y530 is also decent) - since y530/540 is quite decent, so this does not really matter to me as I don't OC my machine.
- RGB - not my thing
- thunderbolt 3. - I doubt I will ever use it, even if I do, very rare occasion I guess.

Oh BTW, graphic card matters to me because I'm into machine learning that's why I am looking for a laptop with a decent GPU.
So I guess, Y540 seems like a better choice for me, if the price difference is 2K MYR.

haha dont see the lowyat article anymore. the pricing is quite impossible. so the article is not accurate.

the y740 on lenovo website right now is RM8.6k for the 15" model and RM8.9k for the 17".
i speculate the price of y540 to be high 5k to mid 6k range. so expect the pricing to be around 5800 to 6500.

and it is not out yet worldwide. its coming in May.

so idk what price difference youre talking about anymore.. are you talking about the y530/y730 or y540/y740 ?

y540/740, just a speculation bro.
so based on your speculation, around 5800 to 6500 for y540, so yeah it's basically 2k difference compared to y740.

ok i see. so means you're not getting it now..

then its all just speculations only right now..

the y540 could even go higher than 6500. wait till May/June to find out the price.

but yes for your usage, y540 is more than enough then..

i dont think the y740 is worth 2k more than the y540.

even at 1k difference between y730 and y530 also i dont think its worth it.

No specific model.
But since now it's era of RTX, rtx is a good choice.
For nvidia GTX 10 series, minimum 1060/70 i think?

Mostly going for Y540, unless Y740 does not really cost much more compared to Y540 which I doubt so.

I don't see the issue. I am okay with my 1050 Ti , sure it's not the best at least it can handle things when I throw at it

but you are essentially waiting and paying for more due to rtx card for the y540. its gonna be one expensive machine..

are you sure the 1050ti or 1060/1070 right now is not good enough for your tasks that you absolutely need the rtx2060?
