Is it worth to spend extra few k for Y740 instead of Y540?
RGB is not my thing, and I hardly play games now, and for sure I won't OC my machine.
The reason I am considering this machine is because I need to do some heavy development and I run a lot of programs at the same time.
Or is there any alternative? I'm also looking into Thinkpad T-series and P-series, but unfortunately they don't have a powerful GPU.

we dont know the price of y540 yet..

unless you mistaken for y730 and y7530.

well the attraction of y730 over the y530 is:
- built material (aluminium body)
- better thermal cooling performance (but y530 is also decent)
- RGB
- thunderbolt 3.

see whether you need i5 or i7 processor.

since you say youre doing heavy development i would think the i7 is more suitable for you right?
and since gaming is a non-factor, they both come with 1050ti anyway.
if youre going for i7 + 1050ti, the y730 cost only about 300 more over the y530. in that case then i would say it depends on you whether the above i mentioned is enough to justify that difference.

if youre going for i5 + 1050ti, the y730 cost about 1k more than the y530. in that case i would say save the 1k and get the y530..

but take note, on lenovo site it says now y530 shipping period is 6-8 weeks and y730 4 weeks.  doh.gif

Thanks for the reply.
I am speculating the price difference to be in 2k MYR at least.
Here what's taken from lowyat.net article.
"
Prices for the Lenovo Legion Y540 starts from US$929.99 (~RM3827). The company says it will be available starting May 2019, though chances are that we’ll have to wait a little longer before it’s made available in Malaysia.

The Lenovo Legion Y740 models, on the other hand, will be made available a little bit earlier, from February 2019. Prices for the 15.6-inch model starts from US$1749.99 (~RM7194), while the larger 17.3-inch laptop will have prices starting from US$1979.99 (~RM8140). But again, these are not the dates and prices for our market, and we’ll have to wait for an official announcement by Lenovo Malaysia.
"

- built material (aluminium body) - Might have to look at the real laptop to tell the difference, but it's not a big deal for me I guess.
- better thermal cooling performance (but y530 is also decent) - since y530/540 is quite decent, so this does not really matter to me as I don't OC my machine.
- RGB - not my thing
- thunderbolt 3. - I doubt I will ever use it, even if I do, very rare occasion I guess.

Oh BTW, graphic card matters to me because I'm into machine learning that's why I am looking for a laptop with a decent GPU.
So I guess, Y540 seems like a better choice for me, if the price difference is 2K MYR.

haha dont see the lowyat article anymore. the pricing is quite impossible. so the article is not accurate.

the y740 on lenovo website right now is RM8.6k for the 15" model and RM8.9k for the 17".
i speculate the price of y540 to be high 5k to mid 6k range. so expect the pricing to be around 5800 to 6500.

and it is not out yet worldwide. its coming in May.

so idk what price difference youre talking about anymore.. are you talking about the y530/y730 or y540/y740 ?

y540/740, just a speculation bro.
so based on your speculation, around 5800 to 6500 for y540, so yeah it's basically 2k difference compared to y740.

What's the GPU that you are looking at ?

No specific model.
But since now it's era of RTX, rtx is a good choice.
For nvidia GTX 10 series, minimum 1060/70 i think?

ok i see. so means you're not getting it now..

then its all just speculations only right now..

the y540 could even go higher than 6500. wait till May/June to find out the price.

but yes for your usage, y540 is more than enough then..

i dont think the y740 is worth 2k more than the y540.

even at 1k difference between y730 and y530 also i dont think its worth it.

Yeah, not going to get it now, let's wait and see.
Mostly going for Y540, unless Y740 does not really cost much more compared to Y540 which I doubt so.

Lenovo Y540 is up on lenovo malaysia website now.

https://www.lenovo.com/my/en/laptops/legion...5/p/88GMY501214

2 models are available, rm5599 and rm6199.

Given that Y740 models are given discount now, Y740 is the better choice to go with.
