For 7-8 days I would concentrate on only one area. Not much time if you would ask me. Personally I would suggest Osaka-Kyoto if this is your first time to Japan. Why? Because you get to see the best of both worlds.

7-8 days with JRpass should be able to cover Tokyo and hokkaido I think.
