We did Kiyomizu, Fushimi Inari & the Sagano bamboo forest each morning before 8am and they were wonderful. Can be a bit cold in the morning and at night so layering is the best strategy. • The best warabi-mochi I've tried on this trip is in this place called Rakushō. It's in Gion on Nene-no-michi, near the entrance to Kodaiji. Melts in your mouth and oh sooo good! • Try out a kimono in Gion and choose the silk ones especially during autumn/winter as they are warmer. We rented ours from Rose Kimono Rental. • Coffee lovers, the % Arabica in Gion is less crowded and more pleasant than the one in Arashiyama which had too long a queue (unless you go early in the morning). • The green tea desserts and coffee in Yojiya Cafe were one of our favorites. Do take note that the one near Ginkakuji is under renovation. • Buses are much easier to ride than I anticipated. Instructions are clear and in English. They are less crowded and you can get a seat if you start your journey from outside the city center. For example, I took a train from Shijo to Kitaoji station and changed to a bus to Kinkakuji. • The Starbucks in a Gion machiya house is overrated although the interior and exterior are unique. • Take a bus to the nearest Kiyomizu bus stop and make your way up to Kiyomizu. From there, head downward to Sannenzaka/Ninenzaka and the Gion district. • Kinkakuji at 4pm on a Sunday was less crowded and manageable. Not sure how bad the morning crowd is although I've heard horror stories. • If you have a Nara bus pass or Kintetsu Rail Pass, take the bus from the station to Kasuga Taisha and make your way anticlockwise to Todaiji. More downward sloping than the other way round. • Yoshikien in Nara is free to foreign passport holders! Show them your passport to gain free entry into this beautifully manicured garden. • Many people skip Naramachi and only visit the park for the deers. I like Naramachi and spent a few hours wandering around the old neighborhood, even visiting a traditional machiya called Koshi-no-ie. • Finding rubbish bins was a pain so bring a spare bag for your trash especially if you're like us who snack a lot. • The special edition Coke bottles are much cheaper in Bic Camera/Donki compared to the vending machines. • When purchasing towels or hankies, look for the Imabari branded symbol as they are of high quality. • Most products are genrally made in China but normally in a store they have a separate section for made in Japan goods. The price is higher but so is the quality. • If travelling from city to city, use the luggage forwarding service to save you the hassle. Bonus for onsen & seafood lovers: • Kinosaki Onsen was LOVELY. Very worth visiting and spending the night in a ryokan. 2.5 hours from Kyoto and close to 3 from Osaka, the express train is covered by JR Pass. That's it for me now, will see how my remaining trip goes and see if I have time for a concise trip report when I get back . Feel free to tag this post on the first page if it helps sweet_pez. Even without the torii gate, Miyajima is lovely for its island vibe and sunsets To make it worth your time, you can make a detour to Iwakuni for Kintai bridge, or rabbit island before going to Miyajima in the afternoon for sunset

Airport Limousine bus to Osaka station 650 yen and 35 min Staying in Toyoko inn at Tenjinbashisuji, I'm a big fan of Toyoko inn (Lifetime membership, value, and plenty of option in different location). Decided to stay in this particular branch due to it is a new branch (Opened in Oct 19) and near Tenjinbashisuji shopping street. Food- Shoyu-Ramen Sodaisho, ramen shop next to my hotel and every night there are local queuing outside of the shop (even at 11pm). Tried both Koikuchi soy sauce and salt with plum ramen. Very tasty. Day 2: USJ » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « Entered USJ on Tuesday without express pass. Based on USJ Crowd Calender it is predicted to be yellow. Average popular rides are all 60min and below especially if you enter as single rider, with the exception of Backdrop where there is no single rider lane and the wait is 70min (around 12 noon) I entered USJ when it is just opened in the morning and decided to go clockwise and tackle the indoor rides which is basically empty. Once I covered the indoor rides, i reached Harry Porter rides around 10.30am and the wait is around 30min via single rider. By 4pm I manage to cover Flying dinosaur, Hollywood dream and backdrop. I even have spare time to go Minion rides and catch the USJ Christmas performance at 5.40pm. I liked the singing in the USJ Christmas performance especially the soprano part as I had a feeling it is actually performed live (noticed slight off tune) instead of recording. Food- Had Turkey leg as lunch inside Jurassic Park area, it's turkey ham leg that is almost twice the size of my fist Cold butterbeer taste like A&W rootbeer with melted ice cream while hot butterbeer taste like indian chai tea with caramel We had dinner at Hokkyokusei Omurice, ordered standard Omurice with ketchup and Omurice with Beef Stroganoff (Special limited menu). First time having Omurice so I can't compared it with other shops but I liked the taste of both sauce. Day 3: Kyoto (Kibune - Kurama) » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « I travel to Kyoto via Keihan Line and switch to Eizan Main Line at Demachiyanagi Station. There are plenty of lockers available in the station even for large size luggage around 9.30am. It was insanely crowded at the station and I had my worst human sardine experience ever. Do try to stand at first train or last train behind the operator room to catch the momiji tunnel when the train are passing through. I decided to drop off at Kibuneguchi Station, take the bus to Kifune Shrine (small beautiful temple), then start our 2 hours hiking from Kibune to Kurama. Hiking through pine forest is refreshing, and just like hiking community in Malaysia, everyone will greet each other (Konnichi wa) whenever we passby. The beautiful Kurama-dera Temple (in autumn) is the icing on the cake. There's a van (with big Kurama Onsen on it's side) at Kurama station which can bring you to Kurama Onsen to relax after the hike and meal. I choose the outdoor bath (1000 yen exclude towel, brought own towel), it's has a small pool which is surrounded by forest. I do saw foreigner with arm full of tattoos in the onsen so I supposed it is allowed. Went back to kyoto to check in Air-bnb and decided to visit Nijo-jo for the night show. Does not enjoy the light show at all (considering the price tag), only interesting part is how they include smell as part of the show. Stayed in The Pagoda Experience, which i stumbled upon via Airbnb. Self-service check in and check-out. I liked the fact that it provide kitchen (with pots, pans, electric cooker, microwave), and washing machine all inside your unit. I bought some frozen food from nearby Mini Stop (convenience store) and cook own breakfast. Food- Lunch in Yoshuji, had refreshing vegetarian meal and hot soba which taste nice but the price tag is on the high side Dinner in 野菜料理菜(さい)ちゃん , I stumbled upon this shop after the night show in Nijo-jo. It's an amazing home cook meal that my wife actually prefer this over Yoshuji. Day 4 : Kyoto (Arashiyama) » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « Drop off at Saga-Arashiyama Station, walk towards the bamboo forest, then took the Sagano train at Torokko Arashiyama Sta. heading towards Kameoka. Right side of the train has better view than left side if you are heading towards Kameoka. Took the Hozugawa River Boat Ride which is expensive where you can enjoy the scenery better than Sagano train (where people will squeeze every angle just to take photos), you can also spot a lot of ducks swimming in the river and sign of damage by Typhoon Hagibis (Fallen trees and wall collapsing). Flea market in Toji temple (21st of every month), huge amount of stores. Wife is happy with second hand kimono and accessories, street food is meh. Store start closing 2-3pm so need to time it early if you plan to survey everything. Night in Fushimi Inari, cold and quiet, it is lighted along the way but some area can be very dark so I would still suggest to bring a torch along. I enjoyed it as it gives me different vibes compared to Kibune - Kurama hike. Food- Lunch in Steak Otsuka, quite a lot of people queuing for this restaurent but serving is fast enough that we barely need to wait for 30min to be seated. Had A5 Murasawa Sirloin Steak that melts in your mouth and rich in flavour, even my wife who are not a fan of beef also enjoy the Short plate beef set. (I do share the Murasawa with her ) Dinner in Teramachi Yoshikura, one of the cheaper kaiseki (11k yen with beef) where you can make online reservation without much hassle. Food is amazing but the dish to get saltier/stronger at later stage. Beef is also melt in your mouth kind of good but less flavor compared to Murasawa. Nothing to shout out about the food presentation but I always emphasis on taste than visual anyway. Chef doesn't speak english but his apprentice/assistant do so communication is fine and he is able to explain each dishes (none of which is complicated). Kids and toddler are welcomed but do be mindful, I was sitting at counter seat and I can hear kids making noise all the way from private room inside, can spoil the mood if it is not under checked. Day 5: Nara - Osaka » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « Check-out airbnb, traveled to Nara via Kintetsu line. A lot of locker in the station, also a lot of large size locker being taken. Went to Yoshikien Garden (which is free to foreigner) which has a very nice japanese garden in autumn, followed by Isui-en Garden (900 yen, which is the most expensive garden I've entered), best garden I've ever seen in this trip. It is big enough that you don't really feel the crowd when you are slowly enjoying the garden. Entrance fees to Isui-en also include Neiraku Museum (small museum). I found it amusing (as a Chinese) as they are showing artifacts from different era that shows the progression of Chinese writing, from Jiaguwen (甲骨文) to modern letter in Japan. Check-in same Hotel in Osaka. Food- Breakfast in Kyoto BANISTER CAFE, nearby cafe (which itself is attached to hotel). Had burger and standard american breakfast, liked the mint paste in burger) Lunch, stumbled upon おうちカフェＮOEL next to Isui-en which has homely feel and home cook meal Dinner, typical Dotonburi food Day 6: Himeji » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « Activate JR Kansai 1 Area Pass. Start the day with Mt. Shosha (can buy combi ticket of cable car and bus near Himeji station, entrance fees to Shoshazan Engyo-ji temple is sold seperatedly). After taking cable car to Mt. Shosha, you will still need to walk/hike a distance to Engyo-ji temple, or you can opt for taking the bus (with extra charges, need to specify when buying the entrance ticket to Engyo-ji temple). Walking in Mt. Shosha has a very calming feeling, not to mention the temple is beautiful in autumn. The architecture of temple itself is also very impressive. Drop off earlier when taking the bus back from Mt. Shosha to visit Koko-en (Bought combo ticket with Himeji Castle), very beautiful and the most packed garden I've ever seen (crowd got worse at 5pm during autumn night viewing session). Personally I prefer Isui-en than Koko-en due to the fact that Koko-en is separated into different zone/theme with clear cut road and wall even though Koko-en theme is more diversified than Isui-en. It is also harder to enjoy the garden with such a huge crowd. Himeji castle, beautiful from the outside but it's empty inside so I will only recommend it if you are into architecture and history. It also get crowded when you reach higher floor of the castle and at certain higher floor you will need to queue before they allow you to proceed. Reached highest floor around 4pm and you can see sunset over the city. Food- Lunch, Hazuki Teahouse inside Mt. Shosha, udon with fish stock soup. Cheap and yummy Dinner, Himeji Chanpon, cheap and tasty okonomiyaki and Chanpon yaki Day 7: Osaka Amazing Pass » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « 1 day pass (would prefer 2 days pass but alas couldn't spend extra day on it) Nishinomaru Garden (Osaka Castle), 1 big circle loop of trees and 1 corner of cherry blossom. Most of the trees has shred it's leaves so nothing much to see. Only reason I was there because it open at 9am (earliest among the list). Walking pass Osaka castle and the plum tree area (wrong season for plum flower). Sakuya Konohana Kan, main target of the day. If you like plants and flower, this is a must. It is so huge and so so so many types of plants and flower that I easily spent 2 to 3 hours inside. Noteworthy, they have 1 room just for hibiscus , and 1 outdoor area with all the fruits where I even spotted caterpillar crawling and munching leaves. Kuromon market, took a few quick bites on the grilled seafood. Fresh but the bill can rack up fast if you don't control yourself. Santa Maria cruise, they have extended the ride to 5pm, but I would suggest 4pm is the best time to take to catch sunset (during autumn). Spa Suminoe, quite big and many types of pool and jet spa (Important after long day of walking) for you to relax. Tried salt sauna for the first time. Dotonburi, had typical Kushikatsu. Batter is light and crunchy, but i think the sauce is the highlight. I can finish all the cabbage by just dipping the sauce. Missed the Dotonburi jazzboat, but it's not the kind of jazz I was looking for. Tennen Onsen Naniwa-no-yu (yes, 2 onsen in 1 day), smaller than Spa Suminoe but the water has stronger mineral smell. There's also more local instead of tourist, although visiting it at 11pm could be a main factor. Entered a random izakaya on the way back to hotel, manage to order without english menu by pointing at limited photos and limited translation by google. I was the only tourist in that restaurant. Day 8: Tenjinbashisuji Shopping Street » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « Late night flight, so I've decided to spend half a day shopping in Tenjinbashisuji Shopping Street. A lot of food and local products. I start walking at 9am where shop are just started to open, by the time I turn back from the end, all shops are fully opened. (It's 2.6k long, so another 5km into my walking distance) I've even found a traditional knife shop and an airsoft shop. Fun fact: I've taken 15GBs of photos, but quality may leaves a lot to be desired. So happened it is a good day for me. 3. Locker availability in Demachiyanagi Station, I know there are locker available in station but didn't know whether it will be occupied. I was worried to the point that I even found Airbnb style of locker storage apps (ecbo cloak) as backup plan. Basically it show a list of shops that willing keep your luggage for a fees. 4. Airbnb nearby Toji temple and fall on 21st which has flea market? Pure coincidence. I've booked the airbnb way before i found out about the flea market. Half of the restaurant I didn't do any research at all. Just walk around and refer google map. Last thing regarding waking up early, being early bird do helped a lot in this trip. My usual alarm for work is 6am Malaysia time. So waking up 6am in Japan is like 7am Malaysia time for me and I have not much problem waking up by then. Visited ueno Park, sensoji temple, meiji Jingu, takeshita Street, meiji Jingu gaien, nezu shrine, shibuya hachiko, caretta shiodome, sumida River, Tokyo tower. Frankly speaking Tokyo metro subway is easier than Singapore mrt line. I don't find it hard to find the places rather than I was in Singapore. No, I was actually staying in a hotel just beside Shijo Station, makes getting around the 4 directions quite easy.

It depends on your home currency also of course. You just need good planning transportation wise and have your meals in decent places that costs less than ¥1000 per meal. Stay in Airbnbs to help with the costs, we just prefer hotels due to the convenience of luggage forwarding and breakfast. Now that I've done Tokyo, Nikko, Fuji 5 Lakes, Kofu, Kinosaki Onsen, Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Okayama, Himeji, Hiroshima & Okinawa, think I'll take a break next year especially with Olympics. 2021 seems like a good year to visit the lesser known areas of Japan.
