To all newcomers on this thread, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do some research first. There are many resident forumers here on this thread that are super friendly and helpful so please do not annoy them with questions like "What to see in Tokyo?", "Recommend me sightseeing places in Kyoto" "What is the weather in Tokyo now" or similar questions. Narrow down your questions and list down your expectations/requirements so that we can provide you with more accurate advices.

Also, do not ask for itineraries. Come up with your own itinerary and enlist forumers' help with checking and giving recommendations. We understand travelling in Japan is not easy especially if you are a first-timer but note that we discourage spoon feeding.

Japan: Season & Weather

Spring / 春 (March to May)
The plum blossoms (“ume” / “梅”) bloom in late February, signaling that a welcome spring is around the corner. The mild spring season brings out Japan’s beautiful cherry blossoms (“sakura” / “桜”), which are enjoyed from late March through April throughout the country. By May, temperatures are comfortable and vegetation has grown lush.

Summer / 夏 (June to August)
Summer kicks off with the dreary rainy season (“tsuyu” / “梅雨”) from June to July, during which hydrangea (“ajisai” / “アジサイ”) blossoms can be seen shrouded in mist. This is followed by screaming cicadas (“semi” / “セミ”) and intense heat and humidity that peaks in August—watch out for mould. Spectacular, large-scale fireworks displays are held in the summer months throughout Japan.

Autumn / 秋 (September to November)
The transition into autumn is marked by typhoons and heavy rain, beginning in August and lasting until September. Weather cools pleasantly in October, and November weather is relatively dry and mild. Gorgeous red and golden leaves (kouyou 紅葉) such as Japanese maple and ginkgo can be enjoyed through early December.

Winter / 冬 (December to February)
December is the start of ski season, and Japan’s snow country regions are famous for deep and consistent powder snow conditions. In Tokyo, winter is cold, sunny, and dry, and the city experiences only a few days major of snowfall in January or February. Winter illuminations, marvelous spectacles of light displayed in cities, compensate for a lack of vegetation and short daylight hours.

Tip on Shinkansen (bullet train) by sacwoc

QUOTE
If it is too big you can store it in the leg room as the space between seats are quite big. But then might be an uncomfortable ride. If you do get the last row there is space at the back of the seat. There are also shelves at the top but not sure if your luggage can fit in. However if you are travelling after May 2020 you will have a problem as the new rule about luggage will kick in.

2. How is the Usage of Credit Card in Japan? Is it widely accepted?
While Japan is a cash based country, Credit Card is commonly used in many places - from department stores, drugstores, taxis to convenient stores (yes, 7-11,Family Mart etc). So when do you need cash? In neighborhood restaurants, small shops, markets, and at (rural) ryokans, just to name a few. You will also need cash to pay for your train and bus ticket/ pass.

QUOTE
You’ll find that large shops, supermarkets and hotels accept credit and debit cards, as will most taxis. But smaller souvenir shops, neighborhood restaurants, local market stalls and traditional Japanese ryokan limit their transactions to cash. This is also the case for most guesthouses operated by private owners.

3. GUIDE: How much do I bring to Japan?

Flight, accommodation and shopping aside, you can use the below as Guideline.

--> Transport
Common mode of transport: train, subway, bus

QUOTE
Narita to Tokyo: ~¥2,500
Tokyo to Narita: ~¥2,500

Per day Travel within Tokyo: ¥1,000

Each *Side Trip (eg. Odaiba, Mitaka, Yokohama, Toyosu etc): Add on ¥1,000 (for return trip)

For example: 7 days = estimated ¥7,000 (travel within Tokyo) + ¥2,000 (2 side trips) + ¥5,000 (airport transfer)
Total: ¥14,000

*Assumption from Shinjuku station to side trip locations.
*Side trip not inclusive of Hakone/ Fuji 5 Lakes, Kamakura, Nikko etc as those has packages to cater for it.

--> Food
There is the budget way and the luxury way; everyone have different spending pattern/ habit. We’ll look at something average (comfortable):-

QUOTE
Breakfast in Café + Drink: ¥600 (eg. in Doutor)
Lunch: ¥1,200 (drinks are given complimentary in restaurants)
Dinner: ¥2,000 (drinks are given complimentary in restaurants)
Additional - Snacks you buy from shopping streets etc : ¥500
Coffee/ tea time: ¥1,000

Estimated per day: ¥5,300
Estimated for 7 days: ¥37,100

Budget way:
Lunch & Dinner – look for restaurants that serve food at below ¥1,000 per bowl/set or convenience stores bento/ food.

Shopping - own budget. A box of Shiroi Koibito costs between ¥800 - ¥3,000+. Simple keychain, luggage tag cost around ¥500 each. Will recommend souvenir shopping at Daiso (¥100 per item) and/or Don Quijote (short for Donki).

[b]6. Hotel Booking Websites (Please compare 1st)

- The usual Agoda.com, Booking.com, Asiarooms.com, Hotels.com, Expedia.com.
- Also check out Airbnb listings. Plenty of them around Japan.
- Some recommendations that I've personally stayed in before are Toyoko Inn & APA Hotel which are usually located in convenient locations near train stations all around Japan.

7.2 ARRIVAL Card/ Disembarkation Card

During your flight to Japan, it's common for Air Stewardess to distribute the Arrival Card for you to fill. This is a compulsory card for all foreigners going in to any country. There may be cases whereby you were asleep while they distribute the card and thus may have missed it. You can request from the Air Stewardess or fill the form at the desk/ counter right before the queue for Immigration. However, you're advised to fill it in the plane when you have the time. Queue at immigration may be long so if you stopped by to fill your details and then queue, that may delay your time in leaving the airport.

8. Budget Food Options
- My favourite choices are Sukiya & Yoshinoya, always cheap and satisfying. There's also Matsuya, similar type of Gyudon (beef rice bowl) restaurants.
- Convenient Stores (Family Mart, Lawsons, 7 Elevens, Circle K, etc.) are found almost everywhere and food is plenty and affordable.
- Supermarkets usually sell cheap cheap prepared meals after a certain time.

14. Emergency/ Disaster
It is not uncommon for Japan to be strike with earthquake and tsunami. However, as foreigners without proper training to manage the situation, it is easy for us to panic. Please go through some of the sites below to understand what you should do when disaster strikes while you are on a trip.

QUOTE
"All smartphones in Japan have an earthquake/ tsunami alert system installed, hence, about 5 to 10 seconds before a disaster strikes the warning system should give people a precious few extra seconds to escape to a safer place or duck under the table. When the alert goes off a buzzing noise is heard, and a voice keeps saying “Jishin desu! Jishin desu” (meaning “There is an earthquake”) until the earthquake stops.

Since an earthquake that happens in a coastal area is more likely to generate a tsunami, a warning system improvement contributes to minimizing the loss of lives and property by giving an alert 5-10 minutes before the tsunami comes." - http://jpninfo.com/50905

KANSAI Good Tip for Unique Open Air Coach contributed by yooyin

QUOTE
Ticket can be purchased online (via Klook) and just pick up ticket at KIX or OSAKA Airport. To experience Unique Open Air Coach "The Rich" (Coach No.5) which is the best, tickets are only available as a same-day ticket in Sagano-line Station booth. You need to specifically inform the staff that you want Coach Number 5, otherwise, they will give you normal coach (window).

Recommendation: Do the Sagano Train in the morning from Kameoka torokko station backwards to Arashiyama torokko station. Take JR line to Umahori Station, then walk to Kameoka torokko Station. Be there 30 minutes or earlier to secure ticket. Ticket counter opens 8.50am at Kameoka torokko station and depending on the crowd in the station, if there are 20+ people already in queue, it's likely they will open up 5-10 minutes earlier to ease up the crowd.

Guys, just checked that late night arrival in Japan airport is risky? I'll arrive at 1030pm in Japan. But searched online and found out that theres no train or bus after midnight. What can i do if in worst case scenario happened?

Taking cabs seems too pricey, Any alternatives?

QUOTE(arabella @ Feb 2 2019, 03:24 PM)
My main reason for going on package tours is that someone takes care of my luggage. Even if I need to load or unload it myself.

When you go on a DIY trip to Japan or other countries where you need to take a train or other public transport from one town to another, what do you do with your luggage while sightseeing? I did not see any luggage when I went on the Osaka-Kyoto fast train.
*
Agree, especially when you have a group of people travelling together. With multiple number of people to take care including your luggage, it's not going to be easy.

So the option is to stay put in 1 or max 2 place without having the need to move accommodation too much. Usually in Tokyo I just stay in the same place for 1 week or 10 days if possible; unless the plan is to do 2D1N side trips. Then that'll require the big luggage to be moved to a coin locker or baggage storage counter.

If you don't mind staying put throughout your trip and worried about the round trip from airport and back, there's option of shuttle van that pick you up and drop off right in front of your Hotel/ accommodation. No doubt it's pricier than taking the subway but if you don't mind paying a bit more for the convenience, no harm wink.gif there are people who prefers hassle-free travel and Japan is a heaven that gives you plenty of options from budget to luxury.

In Dec i tried their service to airport (and my cousins who joined me in Tokyo few days later experienced the pick up from airport) and it was really good. Easy to book (it's in English), on time and one of the cheapest I can find on the internet:-

What kind of souvenir u guys buy in Tokyo for friends? I am thinking to get facial mask but I am open for other options
*
Concur on facial mask!! Personally I enjoy looking at masks and buying few that seems to be unique. Japan has so many stuffs with nice packaging and convincing selling point that im easily persuaded laugh.gif also bought masks for friends as souvenirs and be it male or female, they love it.

As for other items, i sometimes get special flavours of Calbee chips (if my bag allows, due to space), special flavours of kaki no tane (eg. cheese, ume etc that you can't find in Malaysia), Atsugiri chocolate cake (in convenience stores), ramen like ichiran (but so far only bought once because it's pretty pricey), special flavour kit kats etc. Kit Kat is because it's small, light thus easier to stuff in luggage. Last round came across miniature bottles of plum wine (size of a 500yen?) that costs less than 200yen each, so I bought about 10 of them. Also saw miniature bottles of Kirin beer which was too adorable to pass (about 50ml sizee?) and grabbed a pack of 6.

Love all the special stuffs they have. Reducing my KitKat purchase as it's getting a bit boring, but i still buy them for some colleagues and acquaintances.

Wonderful trips and details! Yes Daikokuya is a bit pricey but totally worthwhile. There's so much good food in Nakamise that I'll need to update the front page when I have time. There's also a very good Taiyaki store that I'll never fail to visit at least once!

So you stayed in Ainokura!!! That's so exciting! Isn't the scenery breath taking? Not sure if the snow was too heavy when you were there, but it was amazing when I was there.

Just a simple post without pics from my recent trip with my parents this week.

TL;DR:
Took Thai Airways and used JR TOKYO Wide Pass to have day trips outside Tokyo.
Mainly just touch and go because it is a short trip.
Details of Wide Pass

Why I took Thai? Because I got it cheap via Expedia.
Thai Airways return with 4 nights in 4 star hotel in Tokyo is just RM2.2k per pax so just try.
Considering that parents are aging, next time will just suck it up and pay more.  laugh.gif

RM2.2k inclusive of flight and accommodation for 4 nights in 4 star hotel?? That's a good deal! Which Hotel was it?

On another topic, any recommendation on places to go/eat in Tokyo? not really interested in temples. preferably lesser known areas since i looked around major attractions. below are among the places i've been to last time.
Shinjuku gyoen/yoyogi park, kabukizo, golden gai.
Shibuya crossroad, hachiko, metropolitan building, takeshita, harajuku
Akihabara, ameya yokocho, sugamo(really, really like the rikugien park)
Ginza(high class shopping area..), Tsukiji outer market. kabukiza, daiba oedo onsen.
Nihombashi, Sakura-dori.

Hamarikyu Gardens worth visiting?
*
Lesser known areas? Not sure what you want to see. But in my last trip, I enjoyed going to the Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum. Consider visiting other areas like Yokohama, Kichijyoji (which has sight seeing and specialty shops to visit), Shimokitazawa, Ningyocho, Nakano (there's Mandarake if you like figurines and stuffs) etc.

As for Hamarikyu Gardens - not sure if you'll want to purposely make a trip there just for the garden. But if you're planning to visit Tsukiji's outer market as well, you can take the Water Bus from Asakusa pier. Buy ticket to go to Hamarikyu Gardens. Get off there and enjoy the garden, and from there you can walk to Tsukiji wink.gif killing 2 birds with 1 stone. It's about 10min walk to Tsukiji market.

Location wise, it is next to Shimbashi / Shiodome so very convenient if using train.
*
Near shinbashi it's alright, pretty convenient to navigate around. Didn't know Expedia will have such good packages/ offer. Next time can check it out as well for short/ budget trip. Personally wouldn't even mind a 3-star Hotel and whatnot if the package is a good deal like this...!

I was in Tokyo for a week last June. I must is one of best countries I have ever been to. I have been to many countries but Japan has the best ppl and culture.

I was in Korea last month for the second time. But it's not Japan...huge difference

Took Mas last year to Tokyo only 1k all in return tickets.

Hope this end year can get great offer.. Any advice sifus?
Osaka and Kyoto are my aim

Nay cannot compare Korea with Japan; cultural differences.
RM1k for all inclusive is very good value for air ticket. Year end harder to get/ find bargain or deals as it's peak season. You'll have to wait for Sale and book earlier.

@ntdote

u were saying lack of kids activity, i may suggest u to try ueno zoo. another great place for leisure walk even in the zoo tht never looks like a zoo, more like a park to me.
*
because the whole itinerary was a copy & paste from Page 1 Post 1 wink.gif

ntdote what's shared on Pg1 was merely a guideline. Each person has to adjust it based on their liking, travelling style and companion(s). Don't follow exactly because i can guarantee you won't be able to visit all the places. Pick and choose your priorities, add in your own attraction/ must-do.

That's right! If your family consists of elderly and/or children, there's a lot more prep needed. Just screenshot the Embassy's info and keep it - never know when it can come in handy. Also check out some basic know-hows on what to do during emergency. Japan is prone to natural disaster so the trip could turn up eventful when you least expected it. Thus don't over rely on card, as electronic device may fail during those times (eg. machine unable to accept credit/ debit card etc). Keeping spare cash with you at all times is crucial.

is this msg on page 1 also? if no, i guess is better to put on page 1 👍🏻. u r right saying don't rely on device, treat it as bonus when it works. added, cash is the no. 1 backup.
*
LOLL it's not on Page 1 laugh.gif don't rely 100% on device. Japan is still quite cash-based. Mom and pop shops don't accept cards. Then again, isn't cash always the number 1 backup anywhere? hmm.gif

Hi

I need some advise, i'm thinking should go for Hakone Free Pass or day tour from kkday?
https://www.kkday.com/en/product/2598. FYI I'm travelling with elderly parent and kids.

Thanks.
*
It's entirely up to you.

Follow Tour:
For convenience due to elderly and kids, maybe you'll want to explore Day Tour. With transport provided and everything catered for, it'll ease your burden. Going free and easy style - especially if this is your first time there - it'll potentially be challenging trying to find your way around.

Hakone Free Pass
But if you're only planning to do a Day trip, it's a bit expensive and yet possibly manageable. Here's what I did in my first trip to Hakone.

Bought pass at Odakyu counter in Shinjuku (2 days ahead) >> Took the train from Shinjuku on day of departure >> arrive at Hakone-Yumoto station >> ride train (Hakone Tozan line) >> ride cable car to Owakudani >> visit Owakudani >> ride Cable Car >> get off the station (forgot name) and queue for Pirate Ship (cruise ride) >> ride cruise to Moto Hakone >> walk to Hakone Shrine and visit shrine >> walk back to Moto Hakone >> took bus from Moto Hakone back to Hakone-Yumoto station >> take train back to Shinjuku

For food - you can eat in Owakudani or at Moto Hakone (there's a small town with various restaurants).

If the above is your ideal Day Trip schedule and you feel it's manageable, can go ahead and try? It's a bit costly coz Hakone usually better to do at least 2 days. In fact there's no Day Pass. The Hakone Freepass is a 2-Days pass. Best if you can overnight in Hakone and go for a Hotel/ inn with onsen facility to enjoy a relaxing hot spring experience wink.gif

no problem doing hakone as a daytrip
when u reach back hakone yumoto, it's already evening
can have dinner there and shopping before going back shinjuku
walk out of hakone yumoto station, alot of things to eat and buy
*
Definitely not an issue biggrin.gif but not that worth it because you're paying for 2 Days but only use for 1 day. Best if can maximize the pass if possible! #touristmentality

as far as i know, accommodation in hakone aren't cheap
which is why i and many people don't stay there and do daytrip
unless that person want to experience onsen
*
There are many options available - inn style, dorm style, hotel style, airbnb style etc. Everything boils down to budget and what you want. Just spend within what your budget allows. It's not cheap to get there (the pass) so since you've paid for the transport/ access there, might as well save a night in Tokyo and use that budget for 1 night stay in Hakone instead. Perhaps a slight top up? Depending on what one can afford.

The earlier you book, the more choices you have. In fact, it's not just about onsen. Onsen is definitely a plus point, but having an extra day there also allows you to visit few more attractions. Imo if you can maximize your visit while you're at the area - why not. Unless you're there with a clear goal of only spending a super restricted sum to see the Mt Fuji and go off, then it's not necessary to stay a night.

First of all, thanks all for previous comments and tips for my itinerary with wife and a 4yo. All above talk on missing the sakura bloom really is nerving.

Please have below latest itinerary planning for comments. If possible please suggest a few mid range and also affordable places to have good wagyu/kobe beef meal. Did i miss out any must do? Thanks for help.

  - Nakamise Street
  - Ameyoko Market
  - Ueno Zoo
  - Imperial Palace
  - Tokyo Station

DAY 7 28/3/19 Check out hotel in the morning

  Odaiba

*
I'll only comment on this - the rest of the members highlighted to you on Disney.

1. Day 6 - Not doable. Too packed, too greedy. Pick max 4 things to do/ visit. Better to be 3.

Sensoji + Nakamise as 1 set of attraction. Shops in Nakamise only start opening roughly around 10am onwards (earliest). Some open at 11am. Same goes with Ameyoko Market.

The Ueno Zoo is big and there are 2 temples to visit inside. This will easily take half a day.

Imperial Palace closes at 5pm and i believe last entry will be at 4pm or 4.30pm.

Shops in Tokyo Station start closing around 8pm or 8.30pm.

Japan is unlike Malaysia where a lot of places may open till late such as 10pm or 10.30pm. Even the Malls or Dept Store closes early. You'll need to check all the places' opening hours and plan accordingly to your priority. Don't forget to buffer time to get lost, take train, walk to attraction etc.

2. Day 7 - Going on a Thursday there's nothing special to see in Ginza. Ginza is more exciting to visit on a Sat or Sun, where you can experience Pedestrian's Heaven (Tengoku Houkousha). Go Google it. Lastly, you can visit Uniqlo in Ginza. This branch boasts one of the largest Uniqlo store in Tokyo.

If you go to DiverCity, one of the main attraction is Gundam Statue. Don't forget to check it out and look for the timing of the performance.

Is there a website where I can verify the Japan AirBnB minpaku license number?
*
It's mentioned in the airbnb listing itself. Just double check the host's posting and you'll usually see it there.

Yeah, It is written here. I did ask the host and they, say I haven't booked yet so unable to show photo via airbnb. hmm.gif

It may be a bit suspicious ya if they didn't show the registration number on the post. All of the hosts I checked - they have it. If not listed, I wouldn't go for it. This is to avoid any complications of having accomm cancelled last minute due to unapproved license. Suggest to go for another airbnb if there are others.

Thanks, what are your thoughts on 1 day Osaka + 1 day Kyoto vs 2 Days in Osaka?

General plan

Osaka Day 1

Osaka castle(Himeji/Hikone?)
Nishinomaru garden
Lunch, open to suggestions
Osaka museum of history
Umeda sky building
(I feel need somemore suggestions here)
Dinner, open to suggestions

Day 2
Kuromon Ichiba Market
Shinsaibashi
Hozenji Yokocho
Lunch, open to suggestions
Doguyasuji Arcade
Den-Den Town/America Mura
Abeno Harukas 300
Dinner, open to suggestions

Looks fine to me, except Day 2 seem packed. You may want to put 1-2 of the places as back up to go, when you have extra time.
