Testing Fox Movies. Bitrates reaching 8-9 Mbps. TM wrongly says 5Mbps minimum bandwidth?

I'll capture screenshot from the app & compare with Itunes movies I have. Can't screenshot from old STB though.

this was what i had been suspecting...

the new box may be a major shift towards "playtv apk" std ONLY - wifi, low bit rate... no different from other compatible boxes now doing playtv app.

if that will be true, some of us need to hold on to the old STB's/Lan4 as the PQ is much better!

the playtv app PQ sucks!

will be hearing what actual users have to say in next few days.

bbc player app - u can find in playstore of any android device, regular or ATV.

working Unifi playtv apk for ATV does not exist at this time.

The channels should be constant bitrate. If we monitor from router, that is the download speed which fluctuates as it fills the buffer. So we need to take the average speed to get the estimate bitrate.

I can confirm phone app is 4.8Mbps since it is shown in the app. Now just need to know if new STB also same or better.

how you manage to install? I already uninstall/install a few times. Still error

go to settings to uninstall.. first clear cache & data, then uninstall.. go to playstore and re-install.. walla..

once logged-in.. use the back button to show the left side menu.. use the down button to get the channel list.. pic quality so so lah..

pls take note that the access is not permenant.. after you exit the app, you have to repeat back the same process above to view.. but then at least you can have a feel of the app on the new box..

Ops, sorry forgot about that. OK, here's the average:



5 Mbps average. Exactly as you said. This is Fox Movies, one of the better quality channels.

TV3 averages 2.4 Mbps. Warner TV 5.3 Mbps. tvN 5 Mbps. SCM 4.5 Mbps.

Most of my Itunes movies have average video bitrates of 4.5 Mbps. From my untrained eyes, both look almost similar. Not too bad.

Compare with the old STB using bitrates around 8-9 Mbps, if straight compare bitrate than of coz the older STB better, assuming MPEG4/AVC is used. No way to screenshot from STB, but from my own observation, the old STB handles dark areas better. Like 1080p Blu-Ray rips encoded at 8-10 Mbps.

Now if someone can do similar review on the new box it would be great. Especially on 4K. Is it really good?

Since not everyone has 4K TVs, is there a way to output 4K resolution to regular TVs?

how does the PQ compare to old version v7.9.8 which works on yr mibox s? same?

Doesn't work... Still shows not yet available for this device everytime open even after clear data, reinstall, force close...

From what I know, the bitrates are as follows
Unifi TV on Unifi STB - 8Mbps
Unifi TV on Streamyx STB - 2.8Mbps
Unifi playTV old app - 2.8Mbps
Unifi playTV new app - 4.8Mbps
Unifi new STB - ???

The 2.8Mbps and 4.8Mbps ones are max for HD channels. It will auto drop resolution and bitrate all the way to kbps range if network is congested. 2.8Mbps ones can't switch subtitles while 4.8Mbps one can.

Also depends on whether the video is interlaced or progressive and the framerate. Movies usually encoded at 24fps in online downloads and streaming. TV channels have higher framerate so require higher bitrates. The amount of movement in the video and the quality of the encoder used also makes a difference. The artifacts will be more visible when watching live music performances and sports on the playTV phone app. Movies with no much movements will look okay. TV channels have to be encoded in real-time whereas on demand streaming and downloads can be encoded slowly with high quality encoder.

Well if HEVC is used that'll be another story.

8mbps is fine, 2.8 is not!

really, even the ahem streams i get are in the range 8-12mbps.

which is why i dun use the old app in like 10 years alto i know it works.

it's only good for tiny phone screens.

If the new STB really produces great 4K output, then maybe need to buy new 4K TV already LOL

Or possible to force 4K to normal 1080p TV?

if we request for the new unifi plus box, will the old white box still can be use?
