QUOTE(lookie @ Sep 11 2025, 04:24 PM) i think u need to ask those who truly use esim beforesome say it works....for esim like airalo but not sure about those esim like those sold at shopee, i think it's best assume it's blocked unless it's mentioned in the page that i can access else roaming is your choice or just get any esim and VPN for best assurance |

QUOTE(lookie @ Sep 11 2025, 09:24 AM) My guess.Getting from Klook or Trip should be more reliable because I think they have to stand behind what they sell. If you really want to be 100%, get Digi or Maxis roaming package. Google or FB etc will surely work. |

Personally, Roaming would be my 1st choice to anywhere overseas and some have free calls minutes. Unless the cost is far too expensive compared to alternatives. And if the countries I go to aren't covered by the roaming package. Then I would find one from either Hello1010 or from Trip.comOne thing for sure, once you used eSIM, you want to stick with eSIM. |

Hi Sifus, understand for china railway, child below 6yrs old is free for ride, but when buy ticket from 12306 need to declare child info(from chatgpt, should have a tick box for us to tick), l can't find this tick box for child declare. can l just buy adult ticket without declare child info?

For eSIM need to research and get those with roaming via HK IP. Else if SG/MY roaming you might be annoyed how slow WeChat payment loads.

My experience. Using Maxis/Digi roaming, I can't recall any lag. If there is, I am not too aware of it.
I once have a phone (non-China SIM) with VPN installed. VPN WAS NOT SWITCHED ON. It works for about a week and then suddenly stopped working. Once VPN uninstalled, phone working again. |

So my experience after 1 week in Southern China... (leaving some short notes here for my future self or anyone searching for similar answers)
1) connectivity - hotel/airport wifis are restrictive unless you are mostly consuming china-centric contents. roaming using local telco is fuss free but more expensive. buying esims from shopee is a hit and miss based on the online reviews. buying from more established platforms like Trip or Klook is a good compromise. Got my esim from Trip after my roaming package expired and accessibility/speed etc was similar. 2) payments - install Alipay and Wechat and link to a credit/debit card. I created a virtual card in Wise and linked to both without issue. Top-up TnG and Gxbank as backups (Gxbank has foreign spending cashback). In terms of exchange rates, my experience was Gxbank > Wise > TnG. I prefer the interface of Alipay (both widely accepted but Wechat slightly more so). You can even use the apps to fill up the arrival forms before disembarking to safe a bit of time. 3) Travelling around - install Amaps. Google maps is severely lacking and inaccurate in many instances. Amaps is great for navigating - walking, subways and can even directly hail a ride. Which btw hail riding is plentiful, cheap and convenient in China. (especially worthwhile if you have a group of 3 or 4 ppl). The only time I use Gmaps is to countercheck reviews and ratings. The Amaps ones are often overly high! 4) Other observations: Cantonese is surprisingly not as widely spoken in Gz and Szx as I had imagined. The younger one are mostly speak Mandarin. I was told by the locals that this is mainly due to less emphasis of the dialect in education and also influx of immigrants workers from other provinces. Attitude of the service workers though are rather neutral, I feel generally better than Hkgers. |

Travelling with parents, 4 pax with 4 luggage seem like you need a van for that pax and luggagedidi from what i heard people say is cheap...how cheap i don't know but i think what you should worry about is how to take didi or e-hailing at airport...the way they take e-hailing at airport is different i think you should search video on tiktok showing how...where to go, what to ask the driver(ask for number)...if not you'll be confusing AF better if you know how to speak chinese if not the driver will keep calling you and u don't know what to answer |

All depends on what you prioritize for your party. And also what you have prepared for the trip.
DiDi is very affordable and you have to order one capable to fit all of you & luggage (or 2 Didis). Didi driver will likely call you when he can't find you among the crowd and if you do not have a local number, may incur some inconveniences. Most hassle free would be to take airport transfer, but likely most expensive. Most economical would be take the Metro, if your accomodation is near a station. Also depends on your parents fitness and walkability. Hope it helps you to decide, but sorry for not a straight forward answer. QUOTE(nampaknyahebat @ Oct 11 2025, 08:29 PM) |

Travelling with parents, 4 pax with 4 luggage Trip has the option to have the driver holding a card at arrival gate. Select that. With parents, I would opt for this option. |
