QUOTE(honsiong @ Apr 1 2024, 05:44 PM) I managed to use wechat pay in china with a Malaysia number on account. Just came back after a week there. Alipay app + their mini apps kick ass too, I managed to call didi rides (intracity and intercity), rent halo bicycles, rent jiedian powerbanks, order luckin coffee. KFC and some restaurants can be ordered in wechat QR too, then pay with foreign cards. I just do alipay/wechat & wise card, good rates. Hello, want to check with you, did you tie your wechat pay with a malaysian debit card/credit card? so no issue all the way? Also to other people... do you use ctrip or Trip for hotel booking? i have just started planning but ctrip looks a tad cheaper than trip for the same hotel. but i think there's verification on the ctrip. more work for me.

QUOTE(tientien @ May 10 2024, 07:58 AM) Do check what's the card conversion rate, my experience is it turns out trip.com is actually cheaper as paid in RM. But ctrip has better booking experience n options though. Thanks. Ya. I found out trip.com paid in RM is much better. But me being sort of banana struggling with ctrip.

QUOTE(4WD_er @ May 20 2024, 02:37 PM) He said phone can get connected to internet, but super slow speed. I was very doubtful about this statement, because it will be hooking up with the 2 biggest telcos already. I know this is probably late. But i think it feels slow because it's mini apps within alipay international. I see the chinese (using alipay chinese version) takes abit faster to pay but not as fast as i imagine either. Educated guess. No prove. But want to say roaming on maxis works fine for us. This post has been edited by adele123: Jun 9 2024, 10:08 PM

QUOTE(penanghomes @ Jul 3 2024, 01:52 AM) To reload touch n go when in China - do i need to use roaming or do i need to buy china sim card ? Why would you need to reload touch n go when you are in China? You plan to use touch n go to pay for stuff when in China? Technically can connect to hotel WiFi and just reload touch n go...

QUOTE(#Victor @ Jul 12 2024, 03:09 PM) thanks for your feedback, apart from that read somewhere that there is be 3% charge by Alipay if a single transaction is more than 200 or 300 CNY? any official source for this? I think cant find official source when i tried. It was through our own experience that we hit this. Then it pops up across the internet when you googled for it. The number you are looking at is 200 CNY. In such situation, where you expect expense to exceed 200CNY in one bill 1) pay with credit card 2) pay with cash 3) order on separate phone, pay separately. This is of course only for restaurants that need payment before ordering. I did come across quite many though in my trip across shanghai /suzhou. But really depends on your luck Didnt try split bill the entire trip.

QUOTE(jxly55 @ Oct 1 2024, 05:53 PM) Hi, do you guys reload your Wise account in MYR and spend in China? Or reload in MYR, convert to CNY and spend? What is the most cost effective way in terms of rates, fees? Thank you! The cost is the same for both scenario as I know. The reason you want to convert to CNY first is because you want to LOCK in a good rate NOW. If you want to minimise cost, you don't want to over convert. Because when you convert from CNY back to MYR after you come back from your trip, you incur another round of conversion fees. Itu saje. It's a risk you have to take. I just link wise card to alipay. Didn't really bother to convert to CNY. But when I went few months back, not much fluctuations in the rate.

QUOTE(joshhd @ Oct 1 2024, 05:10 PM) » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « You can reload TnG ewallet in MYR as usual, and just Scan/Pay when you're in China. Remember, just because you see there's 支付宝 Alipay logo at the merchant, it doesn't mean it supports Alipay+ The merchant must support Alipay+ then only it'll work on TnG ewallet. If the merchant's system uses Alipay (not Alipay+), and you scan their QR code or they scan yours, you would see that it is an invalid QR on your TnG ewallet app, or the transaction just fails.
Alipay and Alipay+ is different.
If you want better acceptance everywhere, download Alipay and WeChat app on your phone, sign up/login account, then perform eKYC process (upload photo of your passport and selfie).
To set up WeChat Pay to work in China, you need to Select Wallet Region to China Mainland. Otherwise, you'll only see the "This service is no longer available. As WeChat Pay MY has discontinued its payment services on September 1, 2024..." error.
Use the Search function in WeChat, type WeChat Pay, select it, then tap Enable. Then open WeChat Pay (Me>Services), tap "..." on top right corner, tap Select Wallet Region, then change from Malaysia to China Mainland. Once done, start the eKYC process.
For Alipay and WeChat Pay, they will impose 3% transaction fee if the single transaction exceeds 200 CNY. The workaround to avoid the 3% is, split into multiple transactions if the merchant don't mind. No additional transaction fee if it is below 200 CNY.
Another tip to add to this. Since China bigger cities has many restaurants may have the scan-to-order-and-pay system, what you can do is if your food order exceed 200CNY, you order 1 time, pay first. Maybe use another phone scan and order another round of food and pay again. This post has been edited by adele123: Oct 1 2024, 10:14 PM

QUOTE(Gentleman_League @ Oct 2 2024, 02:37 PM) alright thanks. i just booked my flight coming december 9-18 Chendu and ChongQing which this 2 places will be covered. I starting to do some homework for accommodation, which i come across some hotel they dont allowed foreigners to checked in. On 小红书 thats alot of agent offering good rates, such as St.Rigis Hotel Chengdu 3 night package only 1500 RMB. Anyone could give me advice on this or i should booked thru bookings.com? I use trip.com for my hotel stay in china. I think partly because i was told by using trip.com, i should solve the "no foreigner allowed" issue. No source i can provide though.

QUOTE(Justmua @ Mar 1 2025, 11:15 PM) Friends, is there any way to load up Alipay CNY in Malaysia? Will be travelling to China Hunan province and don't want to carry too much cash. I know can use TnGo Alipay+ in China but I am just exploring if can load up Alipay directly. Also is Wise card any useful in China? How do you all handle your payments? Thank you for your valuable inputs. Link your credit card / debit card to alipay. Don't need to preload value inside. Yes wise card is useful. By linking wise card to alipay. You will find that you don't need the physical wise card. QUOTE(Lon3Rang3r00 @ Mar 1 2025, 11:12 AM) » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « I remember my tour guide mentioned about this (Joining group tour), since it's last minute planning so i just hope on didn't do any research, TnG + Digi Roaming. I noted at some point of time my Digi get no signal at all, unsure whether it's roaming problem. For TnG, i noticed certain shop/vending machine, while scanning the QR code, it gave me error. Certain restaurant I've visited / LuckIn coffee/ KFC seems only get get the Food menu and order done through WeChat Apps. but because of WeChat Pay got terminated in Malaysia, I just go and ask physical menu and pay cash or at one time... I asked the bypasser to help me order and i Paid them. . Just bump into this thread and haven really go through everything. How do i activate WeChat pay? Alipay is more foreigner friendly. I didn't use WeChat pay but should be the same. Link your cards and you should be able to pay This post has been edited by adele123: Mar 2 2025, 10:25 PM

Btw, for those who travel often enough, want to ask, for most situation, any difference between wechatpay and alipay?
my last trip was last year june. we use 100% alipay for payment. i just activated wechat pay... looks like they are offering waiver of fee for international bank card payment, up to RMB1000. seems like wechatpay is a good deal. planning to have both ready. 1 phone use alipay, one phone use wechat pay. but want to ask around here 1st.
