for non sc grads, there will be a 18 months conversion course.

which totals up to 5 1/2 years anyway. pre-u + mbbs now = 6 years.

not of a sudden. been thinking of it for 8 years.

whilst piling up money for masters degree overseas, i realized that i could pay of a couple of years of medical degree locally with all that money. previously, i couldnt do it because of monetary restraint smile.gif

am exploring my options smile.gif else i'll just settle with my initial plan of a masters degree biggrin.gif

MSc in Health informatics.

--

I was offered full scholarship to study IT. Back then I got C3 for Chemistry and C4 for Biology - so I didnt have the confidence to earn 4.0 in matriks/STPM to get into IPTA medic. IPTS/overseas were out of the picture because of $$$.

I felt a higher calling in life. If I want to do it for the money, I may as well just continue doing what I do now. Lucrative without the crazy hours.

what did you do for entry into the 1st degree?........

by that i infer either one or more of the following....

1. you did not do a science based pre-u

2. you did, but did not meet the cutoff

3. you did not do a science based 1st degree (although one could argue IT is somewhat 'science based')

4. you did, but did not meet the minimum cgpa of 3.5

then you are stuck.....you will need good foundation and results in chemistry (+/_ biology)........

i am against the 'passion' ('higher calling') type of entry into medicine.....and like i always said many time before, nobody without straight a's in spm should consider doing medicine......

that is just my personal opinion of course, and in real life, even arts stream students gets into some med schools.....

but my opinion obviously resonates with many countries.....just look at how uk/oz/usa selects their med students.....

Because it hasn't produced any graduates yet so it can't be recognized yet but that being said I doubt a local programme won't get recognized when the time comes.

IMU is partly owned by khazanah. they have enough govt connections to make it fully recognizable for sure.

OH MY GOODNESS~!!

I just came across to know that IMU has increased the fees for all the courses........ Medicine is 37k per semester, which means 74k per year, 370k for a local degree! This is crazy crazy................. Dentistry is 450k now!! ARRRRRRRRR........................ Heatlh sciences is WORST........... Hundred thousand over! I really can't stand with imu having so much students and yet still charging them so freaking ridiculously high already!

IT'S NOT WORTH IT TO BE IN THIS SCHOOL ANYMORE!!!!!!!!!! I seriously think I'll die of suffocation one day while walking around in imu! It's freaking crowded and I can no longer find a place to study in the library, a computer to use either in the elab or the library, nor a proper place to eat! It's always occupied and for some they even leave their belongings unattented there to "secure" the computer!

I cannot help but feel sorry for the upcoming new students! 74k per year for those lecturers from the south asia and 2 hours of lecture per day?!?! Oh come on I'm not being racist here but I feel that the whole imu teaching faculty is filled with non other than middle eastern plus indian with some cheap local lecturers! My friends from health sciences told me some lecturers don't even speak proper english and would probably score only band 5 in IELTS! I don't even have classes this friday! It's two empty columns filled with "PS" in my timetable with the big big "Friday Prayers" occupying the whole day!

To all of the prospective students who wants to come to IMU, you better not think twice but thrice. IMU is not living up to their names as a premier medical school anymore..... For now, it's none other than a money slaughtering kanasai school in my opinion! Messed up seriously, MESSED UP....
There must be a certain reason for Auckland, Otago and Calgary leaving us......... I wonder which UK school will be the first to leave us next!

This is called "supply and demand". When there are more demand than supply, sure prices will go up. That's how free market principle works.

And yes, while a cheaper UK university medicine can cost as low as RM500K at today's exchange rate, charging RM370K locally can be considered expensive.

I feel like going for a try in IMU for one semester. If I find that it's good for dentistry, then I might not pull out from IMU and opt for a cheaper and worth while uni like manipal. But then, can really anyone tell me which is better in dentistry, IMU or MMMC?? I really have no idea as I asked around, no one seems to answer me. I want to know the exact situation before getting into it.

Yeah, 'testing' the BDS course at IMU for one semester will cost you 45K compared to MMMC which cost 26K per semester. shocking.gif

I also have a fren who is torn between the two choices. Studying at IMU wouldn't be much different from MMMC as most of the lecturers are from Pakistan and Middle East. http://imu.edu.my/faculty_member.asp?pageid=1&id=72

As somebody mentioned, IMU dentistry is a case of 'exorbitant fees, cheap lecturers'. Looks like the 'M' is 'IMU' stands for Money more than anything else now.
