The only reason HEIC size is larger is because you are recording Live photos, which is basically a video recording.
Other than that, HEIC is high efficiency format, better than jpeg which a very old format.
*
my concern is not about the size and i never say HEIC size is larger. obviously the HEIC size is smaller in size due to new format.

I am talking about 4k video recording not photos itself.

regretted to use the HEIF/HEVC high-efficiency formats. very difficult to transfer the photos/videos out due to huge size. by rite, when copying those formats to a machines that are not compatible with the format such as older version of macOS and Windows, it should do the auto conversion while copying, but always timeout or error while copying huge files.
*
Correct me if I am wrong, you said huge size due to HEIF is difficult to transfer 😗. Just disable it on iOS if you don’t like it or lower the video from 4k to HD. Don’t complain about huge file size if you go around shooting 4k videos.
But I agree Windows 10 is pain in ass to view HEIF files, need some codec and registry tweak to view etc etc.

ipx user since launch day here. I leave my phone on the wired charger (aukey 10 port base, 2.4A ports) overnight every day too.

And I often charge wirelessly at the office plus at home too. Very rarely use my aukey power bank though these days.

Battery health went down to 99% on ios 11.3.1. It’s back to 100% on ios 11.4.

I am talking about the solution of something not talking about avoiding doing something becos no solution.

No matter what format be it high-efficiency or not efficiency, no one or even Apple has declared that one should not take 4K or high resolution videos becos of whichever format one chooses.

I am talking about the fact that 4K videos in high-efficiency has this problem of transferring to non natively supported OS. I shared this here as this is an used thread. And I am sure other users can easily encounter the same issue. As there is no good solution currently. Thus I am sharing that I will be using compatible format instead.

No point for you to try to argue through becos you misread my earlier message in the first place.

Dun think overnight charge matters as iPhone has safety measure which the battery should not be charged once it is fully charged.

Not arguing, I do agree that the transfer takes ages nowadays....because the USB transfer rate doesn’t keep up with the file size growth, such is the side-effect of high res camera.
AFAIK there’s not any manufacturer, apple or android is doing the conversion on-fly when you move files to PC or Mac. This is not just apple specific.

I was looking for it as well. Would be a great feature to have just to keep up with the news. I find it weird they removed it for Malaysian users.

It is exactly becos Apple USB speed is only 2.0 plus need to convert on the fly thus using high-effiency may not be ideal especially for ppl like me who has the 256gb version. One opt for 256gb version obviously will go for the best quality photos and video taking. thus big file size is not something an option. please see the size of the video even for a 1 min 4K video. I dun see a reason why one should purposely take low quality video to avoid big size video file even it is known to have the problematic transfer issue. It defeats the purpose of owning a AAA model phone while one did not take advantage of the maximum capability of the phone especially one owns the highest capacity model.

Most importantly the transfer of huge video on iOS and Android devices are totally not Apple to apple comparions. Most android devices have the 5-mins rule that the device itself can only record 5 mins 4K videos which the file size is certainly limited comparing to iPhone which has no restriction on the recording size. So for iOS device, per video size can be as big as the maximum remaining storage size of the phone itself.

dun think u can fix a degraded battery. u can only hope that your battery continue to degrade further until the level that Apple will replace ur battery within the warranty period. There is a fixed number of percentage of battery wear needed before they replace it.

For your use case, the compatible format setting works best? I was quite surprised by the YouTube video which showed that the new HEIC/HEIF format had worse quality than JPEG/MP4.

I don’t transfer files from phone to PC but am concerned about image and video quality. Maybe will go back to the compatible format too.

The transfer speed demand already outstripped what usb2.0 can provide since long. Somehow we are still stuck with usb2.0, although there are already super fast buses like usb-c, thunderbolt & pcie.

I had the same problem when transferring big files like HD movies to my phone, it got disconnected halfway, always. It’s so frustrating.

I think it is quite common that when something is compressed the quality will sure suffer. Despite that high effiency formats are claimed to conserve quality while keeping the size low. To be fair, I think most ppl cannot differentiate the difference in quality for JPEG and High effienciency formats.

In fact JPEG is common but it is not good quality format after all since it is also highly compressed. Just that it is very common format that we are using all the time.

In fact, it is kind of waste that iPhone does not save photos in raw format unless one uses third party app.

At this point, I would concern how easy I can transfer the photos and videos to my pc or other external storage for backup and sharing purpose.

My 15 days trip to Europe recently I had taken a total of 60++GB of photos + 4K videos. Out of 35GB++ are 4K videos. Now I have issues transferring them out in compatible format. Because most native players do not play the videos well. I managed to use a freeware to copy out the high efficiency formats files on my phone to my laptop no issue but there isn’t any native software that can convert the high-efficiency formats well. No free and good software to do so. On the fly conversion is the best option but my video files are huge and half way through the transfer I encountered timeout issues.

My iPhone is 256gb format, I bought the capacity because I love to take highest possible quality photos and videos and my iPhone X is about 100GB used now.

Moving forward, I will use only compatible format as of now due to the compatibility issue with most devices. Until high efficiency formats can easily be converted or usable on most systems I will only switch back for the ease of access.
