hey i also have some blue screen problems. Very often, when I boot-up...I have that problem, and it starts dumping the memory...and it moves into Windows Startup Repair (Vista Business) and will ask me to do a system restore...When I cancel..it takes a real long time and finally claims "to fix" Windows..and once it enters into Windows..it says..the problem was caused by the Logitech QuickCam software. I have had numerous times, even tough I hardly use my webcam...Dell XPS technical support ppl seem to be idiots in handling this case...I am so fed-up and frustrated by their sucky service...

Erk... 1GB + 512MB = no dual channel... Not only must the memory modules be similar in spec, it must be similar in capacity for it to be run in dual channel mode... sweat.gif

But, there's not THAT much performance gain running dual channel anyway... icon_rolleyes.gif

And no, replacing the RAM with your own WILL NOT void the warranty, but just inform them of the fact when they come to do on site service IF anything goes wrong... thumbup.gif

For all the problems mentioned over at the V3000 thread, this one seems relatively quiet and docile, thank God... thumbup.gif

Get the CoolerMaster NotePal Infinite OR the Zalman NC-1000 --> best coolers I know of... The Infinite is new and has a similar design to the NC-1000 (well spread cooling vents), AND it's also cheaper and comes with a cool design... thumbup.gif

DON'T get the NotePal P1 if you have a choice... It's NOT really that suitable for the M1210... Am using one right now, and it's not quite effective... sweat.gif

yup..gonna call them up again tomorrow and screw them....all over again..sigh...i hate DELL!

also, because the stupid logitech drivers give me blue screens...i complained to Dell and the guy said he will give a new hard disk out of goodwill (yeah rite) this time only and i asked him what if the same thing happens again, or in the future, if i install a driver and if it screws up my computer, what will happen? he says they wont do anything, i need to get a software warranty...even if it happens when my current hardware warranty is still in effect. stupid dell, they screw up people's computer and dont take responsibility to it. NO credibility at all.

I also found out that all replacement units that they send to us are all refurbished units. The previous casings were all refurbished, the hard disk that they wanted to send me would be refurbished (i didnt want it however) and the current DVD-RW that they replaced is also refurbished - it does not read all DVDs....sigh...I feel so cheated by Dell. I wished I just went with a MacBook or an Asus sad.gif

Well, I'm seriously sympathetic, and yeah Dell's got to own up to releasing drivers that give their customers BSODs... But you gotta bear in mind, you've been delivered one of over 3 hundred millon (or so) Dell computer systems... With that kind of output, they're bound to give you lemons, AND now that they M1210 is no longer being actively manufactured, the replacements you get would sadly be refurbished lemons most of the time anyway... sweat.gif

But, they actually have no liability when it comes to software errors... Most other lappy manufacturers have about the same stand when it comes to software, if it's broken, it's not really part of the Warranty... That's why most warranties are parts and labour (and by that they MEAN parts and labour, no software problems covered - drivers included)... rolleyes.gif

About the replacement parts being refurbished, they have STATED CLEARLY that the parts they deliver and use for CompleteCover will be new OR refurbished parts (it's stated in the CompleteCover clause)... So they're not liable there either... shocking.gif

I'm NOT covering for them, it's just that in this situation, they win... As your replacement's are NOT gonna get any better (remember, no more NEW M1210 being produced), push them as hard as you can and try to get a replacement M1330... Only that way can you be REALLY sure you that you would get a newly produced unit... icon_rolleyes.gif

But then, the M1330's build quality problems are a different story, right? If ONLY HP had CompleteCover... *sigh*

Don't think MacBooks don't have their own set of problems... I've spent my fair time with MBs and MBPs, and even though they look and run excellently, they could also fry your lap like no M1210 ever could... One of my friend's 17 inch MBP (Core 2 Duo, Radeon X1600) gets really hot (I haven't measured it yet, but lets just say 70-80C) while just surfing the net and bittorrenting... sweat.gif

Even my M1210 could only go that high after a few hours of CS: Source on high everything (except anti-aliasing and texture filtering) and HDR on... sweat.gif

On Asuses, I have no comment... Never used an Asus before, so I wouldn't know... But most of the things I hear about them seem fine enough... icon_rolleyes.gif

Eiraku,

Yup, I understand that Dell produces in large quantities and the M1210 was being phased-out, it is already...But to me, my logic is simple. I pay % grand for a laptop and I expect it to function well. I would give-in to the minor problems or the ones caused by Windows itself. Other than that, I do not care how much they produce but I want a laptop as how its meant to be. The Dell technical people and customer reps always give the same answer but I refuse to accept this excuse. After all, its not a 1K laptop or some cheap stuff.

About the software part, yes they are not actually liable for it, so does other manufacturers...but at least please do not make us guinea pigs and test out new stuff or have the decency to test the driver completely and make sure it does not have future conflicts. Even if it does, they should be prepared to assist their customers well and take responsibility to whatever that it causes. If it happens in the future, they would not even bother..just because its under warranty so they're obliged to at least look into it, i guess.

About the replacement parts, I was told they stated it on their website. But who goes thru all the terms and conditions..BTW, did they state it anywhere else? Also, I called them up personally, did not go thru their website, so they should have told me about it. I feel it cause I paid 5K for a new laptop, and when they deliver it to me faulty, in this case cosmetically...they should be giving me a brand new replacement. I did not pay 5K for a refurbished casing...Even tough the M1210 is no longer produced they should have the courtesy to do it.

Yup, I know the MacBooks have lots of problems, but Apple replaces them. Had a PowerBook before the XPS and it got hot too, but not too much. There have been cases of overheating MBPs..perhaps your friend can get it checked.

Asus..yup, have yet to use it as well, but from what I gather, its pretty good. Thing is I am experiencing problems with my Latitude D410..and when I had my Dimension many years ago..it too had a minor prob..but was settled.

Yup, I understand your point..but thing is..I still dun feel satisfied vmad.gif Its just me I guess..hahha
