power management section? i couldnt find it on the control panel...is it under power options?

Just right click on the battery meter you have in the system tray, and click on Power Options...

For Vista anyway...

Added on June 16, 2007, 11:50 pmIt seems that I've found a chink in the X7 Mouse's near-perfect armour... The software provided seems to screw up Far Cry, and my custom mapping for buttons 4 and 5 are ignored in FC as long as the software is running...

It's a simple task of stopping and restarting the program, but its annoying nonetheless...

i was serious. Hold shift while the Stand By, Turn Off and Restart show. Stand By will turn to Hibernate.

So I updated the nvidia drivers with the one from laptopvideo2go this morning.



I got this notification from windows update just now and it's labelled as important.

I think I'll stick to the ones from laptopvideo2go for now.I like how you can adjust the gamma/contrast settings.

Do not, I REPEAT, do not install that update. It's sure, confirm gonna fry your display drivers...

Or at least that's what people in the driver forums are saying anyway... Besides, look at the date of the update itself, it's a January file, how the heck can that be better then our newer beta drivers?

Go to Windows Update --> Change Settings --> and choose "Check for Updates but Let Me Choose Weather To Download Them and Install Them". This should take care of the update icon...

Added on June 17, 2007, 1:38 pmAhhh, lately I've been experiencing some troubles auto connecting to my wireless router... It's just slow, because before this it auto connects right after I start Vista... Now it takes 2-4 minutes after booting...

No connection problems, just slow auto connections... Dunno why... Maybe has to do with me deleting Apple Bonjour and messing with TCP/IP...

Ah... The moody temperaments of my M1210...

ah changing the settings did not work, coz that was my setting all along.

changing it to "never check for updates" works though but that's kinda risky.

so I guess i'll have to live with the icon on the taskbar.

Funny, mine doesn't show anything... Maybe I disabled the security center service or something, as I disable services quite compulsively (habitual tweaker)...

And now I'm stuck with a Vista that is fast and responsive, but has a broken Vista startup logo sound (teng teng *stuck* teng teng) and a slow wireless auto-connection... Ah the joys of habitual compulsive tweaking...

mine is havin this broken Vista startup logo sound (teng teng *stuck* teng teng) too!!

Checked the net, I think the auto-connect delay issue has to do with Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) being checked (even though it's not used, check network properties in Network and Sharing Center and you'll know what I mean (IPv6 connection = Local... Bleh... )...

If that doesn't solve it, maybe disabling QOS Packet Scheduler might... More never-ending tweaking follows...

There's an entry in Microsoft Knowledge Base about this, and you know what their solution for it was?

Turn of the start up sound...

It's due to some driver issues, and I've turned off a bunch of stuff and the problem is still there... So, I still don't know what's causing it...

Unfortunately Mr. Gates and Mr. Ballmer, I've grown to like your little melody... Shame I'm annoyed enough by the *pause* to turn it off completely...

Right click on the volume icon on the taskbar, choose "Sounds" and uncheck "Play Windows Startup Sound" to do this...

Added on June 17, 2007, 2:19 pmDisabled ALL the Nvidia startup entries, and this seems to have solved the problem of both the breaking startup sound AND the "Digital Vibrance" settings in the Nvidia colour control panel not sticking after reboot... For now...

Turning off IPv6 does seem to make auto connection faster, but only by a few seconds... It still takes 1-2 minutes to auto connect to my network... Bleh...

Now, to turn off QOS... Updates after restart...

Eiraku, just curious, did you adjust the contrast,image sharpening and gamma?

I adjusted the gamma to 46% and I did not touch the rest.

Yep, I adjusted gamma to 20%, and colour vibrancy to 20%... The washed out effect all gone here (to my eyes anyway)... Had difficulty in holding the gamma settings though, Vista likes to reset everything every time I reboot (had to disable all three nVidia startup entries to hold colour vibrancy), in the end I resorted to the long way around -->

1) Install QuickGamma.

2) Adjust the gamma in the nVidia control panel to 21% (as when you apply it, it will drop 1%, another strange problem).

3) Start up QuickGamma with admin rights, check that the gamma has dropped to 1.53 (from the default 2.17)

4) Pick the option "Run QuickGammaLoader at startup" or something like that

5) Press on the "Set current gamma as QuickGammaLoader default gamma" button.

Presto, a heck of a better screen! Blacks look black, and I can separate light grey from white now...

DISCLAIMER: This is done with the Beta 160.03 nVidia drivers and Vista... XP users have better drivers and SHOULD not have to go through this hell...

On the networking side, turning off QOS Packet Service, IPv6 and also telling my Intel Wireless chip to only use the B and G wireless bands (turning off A altogether) seems to have cured both the slow wireless auto-connect AND the broken Vista startup sound...

Ah, instantaneous wireless auto-connect...

But, one other thing, my BlueTooth is also on when I was doing the above... I usually keep my BT off, lets see if turning it off again will bring back the broken Vista startup sound (or give me a few BSODs)...

More news after the next restart...

Turning my bluetooth OFF gave me 2 BSODs consecutively... So now confirmed why my M1210 likes to BSOD for no apparent reason...

No effect on the startup sound, but my BT stays on from this moment on, and I'm only gonna turn it off when I'm on batteries...

I wonder what's wrong with the BT drivers and Vista...

erm people...should i just get the xps 1210 while it's cheap now or wait for the sure-exp-brand-new-cool 1330?..i noticed the graphic there stated only 8400 gt...thats almost comparable to a 7400 go..or issit?

Wait... I'm regretting not waiting already... And I think that it's just a 8400GS, and while it's not as good as the GT ver of the same card, it's a bit better then the 7400go and it's DirectX 10 to boot!

But yeah, it's gonna be expensive... Specced comparably to my M1210 (which means mid processor (1.8++GHz), 2GB RAM, 8400GS, 120GB 5400RPM; expect to pay RM500-700 more then my list price of RM5677 (at that time)...

If you think that's out of your budget, just get the M1210 while its cheap... The 7400go is crappy, but not THAT crappy (plays Far Cry full settings + HDR just fine at 800x600)...

I specced it up as per mine (with 3 Yrs CompleteCover) and it's at least RM600 cheaper now...

whoa...thats like almost 6.4k...add summore can get asus g1s already hehe...that's way outta my budget...so i guess i better get the 1210 while its still cheap n in stock hehe...not hardcore gamer anyway and i sure don;t mind knocking settings down to med hehe...btw...any idea how long it is for them to deliver to east msia?

Most of the time, delivery to WEST Msia takes about 5-7 days (there was this lucky dude who got his in a record 3, but that's an exception to the rule), so add a few more days (say 7-10 days) for East Msia...

But that's just my estimate, alright?

And IMHO a HARDCORE gamer is someone who would rather mess with his game's settings and config files to get the best out of crappy hardware... I mean, isn't tweaking and adjusting everything already half of the fun?
