YES.

this, i can help u.

sorry if i had assumed too much... becos i have been using media boxes for 10 years while others have not used any before.

see if this helps...

.. smart tv's... as a bonus and "market demand", they include a usb port for u to plug into it, play the video.
.. depending on the tv, there are issues about video formats, audio formats, subtitiles, audio selection, etc.
.. i always hold this opinion - tv's players are good for simple use; they cannot deal with more complex files.

.. there are many devices u can get on yr own and play the video inside the HDD - bluray/DVD player, media player, android box.
.. bluray/DVD players today can play 4kHDR discs, has USB port to play soft media, i.e HDD as well - price... rm2-4K??
.. "media player" is obsolete... go back 8-10 years, u buy WDlive or ACRyan... these boxes do HDD playback very well...but... can't stream online.
.. by 2011, media players closed shop, gave way to ANDROID BOXES - these can playback HDD videos AND stream online if internet speed is good.
.. today, android boxes are popular becos of playback + online streaming - 100 brands, 1000 models, all kinds of features, versions, prices.
read:
https://forum.lowyat.net/topic/4200167
(i do not post in that thread anymore beocs most users look for cheap boixes, while i prefer more costly and more capable ones.)
.. himedia Q10pro is the flagship of android box maker Himedia (shenzhen, china)... i hv one... plays (almost) EVEYRTHING... video or audio.
.. there are other equivalent good boxes - a matter of price and the specific features... u need to decide what u want to decide which is BEST for u.
.. the is no BESTEST box, but a matter of features priorities.

your question about QUALITY... a cheap player as in the tv or a cheap box - u get the video but little else.
a good box player will be able to play the highest quality video and audio files and deliver it nicely to yr TV, AVR and speakers.
now, if u hv simple needs,... save all the money... just play at the tv... u get tv audio, mediocre video quality... but why not?!
*
thanks I got ur point but my main question was if I put my movie in hdd and put inside himedia pro or If I just plug my usb drive to usb slot on himedia pro, is it any different in term of quality or same?

2. Since u said himedia pro is separate android box together with sharp ua6800x as android tv, in term of fast output & user friendly which one is better? Maybe can provide some ss on ur review smile.gif

The built-in TV player app itself can't decode files with DTS and DD+ and higher.

Hmm..so running Plex would probably not wise as I won't be able to play movies with dts from it.
Wonder if a shop would allow me sideload the app to test.

U work for Astro? I'm sensing damage control la
Why would anyone sacrifice free Youtube for Astro go, seriously?
Astro should fear Android TV system for exclusion
With deregulation, Astro is losing market share
The problem with Astro was that it had monopoly so customers must buy their worthless programs

nyunyu, 2+5 yrs warranty isn't a promotion because every shop sells it
Malaysia economy still slow la under Mahathir Mohamad
The actual promotion has to do with % discount + free gifts

Sharp tech guy referred to our Android system
I do support sideloading apps but need more info before I proceed
Resetting is a major pain
*
Kek.. Clearly you don't know AVFAN on this forums.. I haven't met him in person but fairly familiar with our online personas. We both ditched Astro so long ago and it's been the cord-cutter's life all the way.. Tis as he says, ain't nothing wrong with sharing someone else's sub. Usually that of a close friend or family. Especially if one chips in on the bill smile.gif

Sorry, subject not closed until u explain, clarify and apologize if necessary.

U cannot write shit and accuse someone wrongly and just walk away.
Now, I see... becos i say astrogo a lot, u think i work n promote astro. biggrin.gif

How ridiculous... i dumped astro... subscription, decoder, dish... 6 years ago.

Now, i use the app only... free... becos my fren is kind to share with me.

Now, do u really know diff  between astro, astrogo and astro njoi?? sweat.gif

If it is your ignorance at work, please do more work next time before u vomit.
As for the tv resetting, it auto resets sometimes... what is your point?

Sorry boss.. He not know how you roll.. laugh.gif

himedia q10pro has a compartment for HDD inside (most boxes don't); has 3 USB ports too.
the quality output from HDD whether from internal or external is the same.
since disc reading, data processed by same.

a box is more versatile - bigger memory, storage, can do more apps.
easier to use, navigate.
output quality depends on the box... better boxes give better video and audio for playback.

the tv's androidtv is capable for most android apps alto it takes a bit more work to sideload since it is androidtv and not generic android like boxes.
output quality from apps or tv player is marginally inferior compared to my box.
then again, i wud think my box is among the better ones; can't say same for cheap boxes.

the androidtv in the tv is handy in that u can just switch on tv and play an app - e.g. for news... u need not switch on the box.
that's how i use it - androidtv for casual viewing.

the box is for playback, "serious" streaming, home theater audio, files management/transfer, downloading, and wifi streaming from pc.

it's good to have both...!

mx, vlc, plex, etc. will play the files.

i know they do NOT deliver dts/dd with optical, get 2.0 only.

HDMI arc, i did not try, dunno.

it will be a bit hard for u to install and test at a shop... unless u r buddy-buddy with the guy there.

did u...

1. install indic keyboard and set it to default (instead of leanback keyboard)?

2. install rotation lock app and activate it to landscape?
*
Thanks bro, it was due to the keyboard. I guess the app doesn’t play nice with the leanback keyboard. All good now! 👍🏻

Try and let us know. I know VLC could play most files, if not all, on this TV with audio decoded and output to the TV's speakers. So I think Plex might just works fine.

I can't at the moment as I do not have the tv nor a friend's to test with. As AVFAN mentioned, the shop would probably won't let me install anything on their display set.

On my android box, I usually use Kodi with PlexKodiConnect plugin. This way I can properly play movies with dts/dd. This is not possible with normal plex app.

it Wil b very hard to ask to install app, connect to home theater to test in a shop.

With your box, can u not play ext storage files direct with kodi for dd, dts, etc.? If no, it means yr box is not supporting kodi fully, need plex.

Kodi works on the tv android too but androidtv now does not allow reading of ext hdd, restricted to internal memory only. That is why I did not mention kodi but only vlc, mx.

Kodi works on mine, only that I don't use external drive. All my medias are on Synology server and have Plex Server installed. Plex server can direct stream dts just fine, only plex app has a bug that won't play media with dts/dd. This is where the plugin comes in where it neatly configured Kodi with Plex library, meta etc and able to direct play dts movie.

i don't think LC60UA6800X support dts output, only dd. so even kodi can read it, it will be decoded into dd for the audio output right?

UJ630T.

DTS, DTS-HD (probably downstream to DTS only), AC3, E-AC3 (DD+) all can play. Built-in player a bit picky. Doesn't work well with mp4 file coded with complex audio codec, but MKV's are ok. Sometimes it said Audio not supported, but still has sound. laugh.gif

do u also have a box player?

the way i see it, the usb playback function of a tv is worth rm300-600 only.

rm300 box, u get all the basics played, incl dd/dd+/dts, hevc, 4k; rm600, u get it all - dtshdma, ddtruehd, atmos, hdr, dtsx, dolby vision even.
