President Jokowi warns the TNI to 'stay away from politics'

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo on Thursday urged the Indonesian military to keep away from politics and remain loyal to the government, amid growing controversy over recent comments made by his top general.

Military analysts say that the President's warning was a response to the controversial comments made by the head of the TNI, General Gatot Nurmantyo, that Indonesia is under siege from 'proxy wars' and his insistence that the communist threat to Indonesia has resurfaced.

“We cannot afford to be reckless, we must unite,” Jokowi said in a speech celebrating the 72nd anniversary of TNI, in Cilegon city, in the western province of Banten, as Gatot sat near him on the stage. “The TNI with other institutions in the government and with all other components in the nation have to be in synergy, solid, united and work together.”

The military, Jokowi said, “should always ensure its political neutrality in the current democratic era.

“To be loyal to the state is to be faithful to the legitimate government,” he added.

In September, Gatot told retired military officers that a plan had been in place by a 'non-military organization' to import 5,000 firearms illegally “on behalf” of Jokowi.

The statement later was clarified by the president’s top security minister, Coordinating Political, Security and Legal Affairs Minister Wiranto, who said the national intelligence service had ordered only 500 nonmilitary-type firearms from PT Pindad, the state-owned firearms manufacturer, for “training purposes.”

Analysts also speculate that general Gatot may have ambitions to be in the running for the President's post in a future general election.

Interesting to see that both FNSS/Pindad Medium Tank and SAIC/ST Kinetics MPF are using the Cockerill 3105 Turret. The unique thing of the CMI 3105 Turret is that its gun has an elevation of +42 degree and can fire the Falarick 105 GLATGM.

Saudi King, Vladimir Putin clinch billion-dollar energy, arms deals on landmark Russia visit

user posted image

MOSCOW (AFP) – Saudi Arabia’s King Salman, on a landmark visit to Russia, and President Vladimir Putin on Thursday (Oct 5) signed a slew of arms and energy deals as the key US ally seeks to deepen cooperation with Moscow.

The leaders of the world’s largest energy exporters discussed an extension of an Opec agreement to cap oil output and oversaw the signing of deals which officials said were worth billions of dollars.

Saudi Arabia signed preliminary agreements to buy Russia’s S-400 air defence systems and anti-tank guided missile systems and receive “cutting edge technologies,” said the Sunni state’s military firm, Saudi Arabian Military Industries.

The two countries also signed a series of multi-billion dollar investment deals including one to create a US$1 billion (S$1.3 billion) fund to pursue energy projects.

“This is the first visit by a Saudi Arabian monarch in the history of our relations and that in itself is a landmark event,” Putin said as he welcomed 81-year-old King Salman to Moscow in an ornate gilded Kremlin hall.

“I’m sure your visit will boost the ties between our countries,” Putin added.

“We aim to strengthen our relations in the interests of peace and security, in the interests of developing the world economy,” the Saudi king responded.

Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir told journalists that “relations between Russia and Saudi Arabia have reached a historic moment.”

“Today, we alone as the Russian Direct Investment Fund announced deals worth US$2.1 billion,” said Kirill Dmitriyev, the head of the fund set up to attract investment.

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said agreements came in the fields of “energy – not only traditional but also nuclear power – and also in cooperation in space exploration (and) agroindustry and infrastructure projects.”

‘DIVERSIFYING RISKS'

Saudi Arabia is the country that buys the most US arms and Washington and Riyadh in May announced a US$110 billion deal to sell weapons to Saudi Arabia.

But Saudi, a long-standing ally of Washington, is keen to boost ties with Moscow as a major player in the Syrian conflict and a fellow oil producer with shared interests in supporting energy prices.

“We are certain that further strengthening of relations will have a positive effect on strengthening stability and security in the world,” his Saudi counterpart Jubeir stressed.

Fyodor Lukyanov, the Kremlin-connected chairman of the Council on Foreign and Defence Policy, said Riyadh saw closer ties with Moscow as expedient for the moment, and was “diversifying risks” by buying arms from both Moscow and the US.

“Saudi Arabia has recognised Russia as a significant player in a region that is important to it,” he told AFP.

“They respect Russia more now. But you shouldn’t think it’s forever.”

OIL CAP FOR 'STABILITY'

The leaders of the world’s largest energy exporters also discussed the Opec agreement to cap oil output.

Opec members have joined with Russia and other countries in cutting crude output in a pact that has helped prop up prices.

“We strive to continue the positive cooperation between our countries to achieve stability on world oil markets which promotes the growth of the world’s economy,” Salman said.

Russia and Saudi Arabia are heavily dependent on oil exports and the global plunge of the price of crude that began in 2014 lashed both their economies.

Putin said on Wednesday it was possible to extend an Opec deal to cap oil output “at least until the end of 2018”.

FOCUS ON SYRIA, YEMEN

While Russia and Saudi Arabia are partners on the oil market, they are at loggerheads on Syria, where Moscow supports President Bashar al-Assad and Riyadh backs the opposition.

Lavrov said the Saudi monarch and Putin’s meeting saw a “particular focus on Syria, Iraq, Libya and Yemen.”

The two sides said they had common ground in a desire to rally Syrian opposition forces to take part in UN-backed peace talks.

Jubeir said that the countries “closely cooperate... on uniting the Syrian opposition and broadening its framework, in order to start the political process” at Geneva peace talks.

According to agreements made during end of Suharto era, position of Chief of the TNI should have been rotated between the 3 main services. Somehow the TNI-AD got their chiefs appointed for the position twice in a row for unexplained reasons (this term should have been the Chief of the TNI-AU's turn).

From what I hear now both TNI-AL and TNI-AU are pissed off at Jokowi already for pandering on what they see as blatant TNI-AD attempts to control the armed forces. Now add the fact that General Gatot is somewhat ultra-nationalist and has been known to have a reputation as a loose cannon.

Tatra unveils new self-propelled 120mm mortar on Pandur II CZ

Posted On Tuesday, 26 September 2017 09:08

During the NATO Days in Czech Republic, Tatra Defence Vehicle has presented a self-propelled mortar vehicle, a new variant in the Pandur II CZ 8x8 armoured vehicle family. Tatra has developed this vehicle to response to a new request of the Czech army for a fire support vehicle.

In 2006, General Dynamics announced that the Czech Republic has selected its European Land Combat Systems subsidiary Steyr-Daimler-Puch Spezialfahrzeug GmbH of Austria to supply its army with 199 new eight-wheeled Pandur II armored personnel carriers (APCs) between 2007-2012.

The Czech army is equipped with six versions of the Pandur II CZ including, APC , command post, reconnaissance (in two modifications - with and without a radar), engineer and medical vehicles.

The Pandur II CZ in mortar configuration is fitted with a Soltam Cardom 120 mm caliber mounted at the rear of the vehicle. The Cardom is an autonomous, computerized 120mm recoil mortar system for mounting on light and medium armoured tracked carriers and wheeled armoured vehicles.

The 120mm Soltam Cardom mortar system has a traverse of 360°, it can fire from inside or from outside of the vehicle. In the vehicle, it fires through tow roof hatches, that open on each side of the vehicle.

It has a maximum firing range of 6,800 meters with a rate of intense fire is 16 rounds per minute, however rate of sustained fire. A first round can be fired within 30 seconds from travelling. A total of 50 rounds of ammunition are stored inside the vehicle.

The Pandur II CZ 120mm mortar could be fitted with a battlefield information management system, which links up with other similarly equipped vehicles and command posts. A digital fire control system can be integrated with navigation, self-positioning and aiming systems. The fire control system can operate in automatic laying mode, once it receives target data from an observation position.
