Dear all, been using 86u merlin for awhile. Am thinking to flash it back to Asus own firmware.

Question 1: Just download official firmware from Asus and upload/flash it back to the router right? It will overwrite the merlin firmware right? Just need to be sure as i dun 1 to brick it.

Question 2: Am thinking either to buy China set of AC5300 or Malaysia set Ac68u twin set to use Aimesh with my current Ac86u. Please advise any compatible issue with both my choice? Ac5300 China set got issue or not? Both is option is around RM800 - RM1k.

Please guide me. TQ

I have no problem with the router nowadays.
Actually got another unit last month.

Both units working 100%

Firmware Version : 384.17

I read around Chinese forums, and found out that they usually set the WiFi region to Australia.
I think that helps.

If you're looking at hardware upgrade, yes, huge improvement over RT-AC86U
But if you're looking at performance upgrade, unknown as there is not much review of this model

Wish blacktubi would review it soon & compare it head to head with RT-AC86U & also RT-AC68U

No need compare with AC68U. It's too old. Even AX56U is better than AC68U. brows.gif

But then the RT-AX56U is rather problematic
You can check ASUS thread in the network section of this forum. Lots of complaints about the AX56U

New router is like that. It takes time to fix those bugs. People also complaint about the new octopus RT-AX89X.

I think RM415~ for a AC86U "new from Taobao" is still the best price to performance router right now.

Thank you guys for the advice. I will bring out my china set AC86U to try it out again as i have the similar problem with the 5GHz WiFi issue.

For those who having similar issue, you may refer to this URL from SNB on how to set the WiFi Region
