Sad to hear about those having AC86U issues. I'm surprised you can't reset - I've been told (and read) many times that Asus routers are unbrickable because of the built-in recovery process. I'm wondering whether it's heat issue like mine (leave it off and alone for a while to cool down and try again. If that works, I recommend flashing Merlin FW, at least you can confirm whether it's heat related.

I just got my fans today, will install and report back.

I guess its all about electronics and/or poor design by Asus. I have not used cooling fan from the 1st day of using the router. That could be the problem. However, Merlin FW did not give any clue whether the unit was over heating and my temps hovered around 75c at full load, and i know that the cpu could withstand may be up to 90c before shutting down.

However, i did notice that the power LED blink and even did not light up for a while during the normal auto reboots a few times prior to the " demise' of the router. That could be the early sign of trouble.

Anyway, I am looking for a replacement. I am thinking to get the Tenda AC18 and flash it with Merlin FW as a temporary substitute. However, should Jacye manage to racun me for the new AX88u router, I will go for this, otherwise I will wait for AX86U.

Fans managed to keep the router running at around 82-84 degrees overnight. Success!

Still too high by using fans. Should be around 60 (and lower) only. You might want to check the headsink contact if you willing to open up your AC86U.

Considering it was at 99 degrees and then crashing, this is already an improvement. Now is not a good time for me to open up the router, perhaps I will do it in early Jan

Mine was overheating up to 99 degrees (and beyond) to the point the CPU shuts itself down, which is why 80 degrees is acceptable for now. I actually suspect the heatsink may have came loose or something.

I am going to pos laju tomorrow to send back to the seller. Will see how it goes. Not putting any high hopes and i believe it is going to take many months before the replacement if any would arrive back.

I suggest not to get the first version of AX routers. Probably wait about 6 months and see how things are. AX is new technology and currently there are no AX clients yet. Also AX router is going to be expensive. It's your call anyway.

For me i am sticking back to another new unit of ac86u. (hoping this time it won't fail so fast again)

I agree with you. I normally wait a few months until the new technology matures as I dont want to be a guinea pig. That is the reason why I will look for a temporary substitute before deciding.

To me AC86U was a keeper. It was better than A68U that I owned previously. Asus brands have been realliable as I am using their graphic cards, mobo etc. It just that this AC86U went belly up prematurely that made me thought whether their standards have came down, or i was just unlucky.

Hopefully Asus has made some modification and changed some internal components to make the router more reliable.

So u are getting another unit from China?

Just send the unit only. Keep the antenna, power adapter, boxes, etc... My shipping fees if I remember correctly is less than RM50. Using poslaju.

Does anyone have experience sending to Asus China directly?

What a coincidence! Mine today suddenly got this issue. Earlier I tried to connect with my iPhone. It detected the wifi ssid but it said "incorrect password" which is very weird. So I turned off and turned the router back on only to discover this

Did this work again for you? Will try again tomorrow see if it somehow magically worked again sigh...
