Yes. As long as you able to swim and comfortable with waters and deep blue water.
Learn with who or take swimming class is unnecessary but if u enjoy swimming, y not ... it sharpen and enhance your swimming skills further.
*
Not necessary to know swimming, as long as you don't get panic in water.
If you sign up for PADI, PADI never required you to know swimming. Unless you go for Dive Master course.

Your statement is incorrect.
U need to know some adequate swimming skills.

PADI requires you to swim/snorkel and float. How can you not panic in water when you cant swim?

It depends when you take your OW. The standards gets updated year to year.
At the moment you are required to swim 300m with fins&snorkel/swim 200m without assistance and float 10min without assistance.
If any instructor from PADI does not do this than they are breaking the standards and risk getting their license revoked.

It's PADI requirements for you to swim. However, a lot of instructors do not ask the students to do it.

When I took my PADI OW 10 years ago, pretty much every instructor told me you don't need to know how to swim, only need to be comfortable in water. I've never needed to do any swim test. The other guy who took OW with me had to float without any gears for a few minutes in the middle of the sea cause he told instructor he doesn't know how to swim. That's about it.

Later on, they updated and required their students to swim. Maybe some instructors still not updated about it. So who knows what other outdated stuffs are taught.

To be honest, not sure how are you going to swap out and wear back the BCD on water surface if you don't know how to swim.

I for one hav problem passing it on first try, but then i'm just fat and mayb i forgot to release the shoulder strap tongue.gif

These instructor know what they are doing (by experience) and its their livelihood. Even I told my friends (group of 20) who totally donno know how to swim to experience DSD on their Tioman trip and all goes well and they still enjoy the dive.. but they get to enjoy it because I drill them what to expect, what to do, what to practice before they went. But without all that.. I think you should just go learn swimming.. its easy and you will enjoy more..
