QUOTE(KiraTomaru @ Jul 29 2017, 01:23 AM) out of curiosity is EFR something one should only do once or on a renewal basis even if you eventually take rescue diving course just after EFR itself? Fwiw i took first aid in 2008. By 2016 when i took efr i realized that i forgot almost everything

QUOTE(HITAMZZ @ Aug 16 2017, 11:49 AM) hello divers! is it necessary to know how to swim? some said yes some said no.. better to learn to avoid panic attack.. hehehe any scuba diver or soon to be scuba diver wants to learn swimming can contact www.wasap.my/60133369174 (Zack Salim) certified Swimming, Freediving and Scuba Diving Instructor RM50 for an hour (maximum 8 pax 1 session) The best thing is, if within that hour you still cant swim, you get back your RM50 (he quoted that) https://www.facebook.com/zack.laaraThis post has been edited by Sham903n: Aug 16 2017, 12:16 PM

QUOTE(wKkaY @ Aug 16 2017, 08:23 AM) Fwiw i took first aid in 2008. By 2016 when i took efr i realized that i forgot almost everything im quite sure its difficult to forget the basics of basics like CPR? although i must admit i did have some prior experience as a saint john paramedic so the basics like CPR is kinda stuck in my head, although i never did get the opportunity to use it so in terms of actual real world usage experience is more or less 0 if you took EFR did you take the rescue diver course too? im curious

And plus, CPR has changed a lot the past decade, notably after the 2010 update. The principles are similar, but its the little things that add up, however slightly, to increase the chance of survival.

QUOTE(HITAMZZ @ Aug 18 2017, 09:56 PM) So it's better for me to go for a swim first? It's recommended. Its good to get used to the water as well. I personally know some strict instructors who won't allow you to start the course until the potential student learned how to swim first. By right you are supposed to know how to swim according to PADI cause in one of the Open Water compulsory task is to swim 200m. This post has been edited by miyakochan89: Aug 19 2017, 12:22 AM

I came across one of the centre that allows you to dive without knowing how to swim.. so I'm abit skeptical about it...

There are a few instructors here, I think they will be the best to advise you. But personally? I really think it's best to learn swimming first. Consider it another survivor skill, and it doesn't do you any harm knowing how to swim. And also, getting familiar with the water will reduce your risks in scuba diving. Its a fun activity, but people are forgetting that its also a high risk activity. This post has been edited by miyakochan89: Aug 19 2017, 01:31 PM

QUOTE(HITAMZZ @ Aug 19 2017, 03:58 PM) Yeahhh, I guess I'll need to take swimming class first. Is there any difference between PADI and NAUI? Both are certifying agencies with similar teachings. It all depends on the instructor. Now about the swimming part, there is no saying you need to be able to swim butterfly style for 1km to be able to dive. You can snorkel without any buoyancy assistance for 300m to complete the swimming. The main reason we have these requirements is so people are comfortable in water and be calm in making decisions in case of an emergency. Swimming lessons help build that water confidence. Just learn breast stroke and threading water is more than enough.

It would be fine if I just learn by myself with the help of friends right?

As long as you able to swim and comfortable with waters and deep blue water. Learn with who or take swimming class is unnecessary but if u enjoy swimming, y not ... it sharpen and enhance your swimming skills further.
