Heheh... you never moss ah? Moss would look nice. So you got CO2 supply? How bout the temperature of your tank? Ai, I can't go far with my small tank also since the temperature is always 20C to 30C.... kills the plants that I put in.... coz the tank is really very small. |

if ur tank is small..... my 12" X 10" X 12", nano tank on top i use the CO2 container.
if small like below photo nano tank, tab will do. this is only from my understanding, not experiance... cos the nano tank ontop is my 1st plated tank... if success then i will make my small nano tank also. its about 7" X 5" X 6". ![]() ![]() |

No so sure about this, but I've only started this hobby in January, but if you tie riccia to wood, won't that come lose easily? Most that I see are secured to via hairnet.
As for CO2, I use a DIY yeast CO2. The big white stone is a bit distracting though. Try these links to help you get started: On basic equipment: http://www.aquatic-eden.com/2006/12/beginn...d-aquarium.html On layout: http://www.aquatic-eden.com/2006/11/golden...quascaping.html Good luck! For DIY CO2, I just use a 1.5 liter bottle and add 2 teaspoon of sugar and slightly less than 1/2 teaspoon of sugar. Will last me about 5-6 days.
I use a 375ml bottle for my 1.5gallon cube on my office desk. Works well for me. I'll post some pics when I get home. |

For water, I just fill it up to the point where it starts to curve in. Right after the plastic label for most fizzy drink bottles. Not sure about others here though.

Depends what you want in your tank, really. Equipment wise, price varies from location to location. Think about: filtration system, lighting, CO2, flora, soil, temperature devices. If you've got the money to spend or have a tight budget. Google for local sites, and you'll be surprised that the planted tank does have a healthy following. Run through the Aquarium thread for starters. Have fun reading

I am quite happy that my small tank has survived for 1 year already. Now occupied by 1 betta and 5 tetras.... and a snail that keeps laying eggs hahah.... but always only 1 snail. |

QUOTE(nezumitaro @ Mar 22 2007, 10:28 AM) well i usually change water once a week around 25%. usually i look at the water and see if its cloudy?are there weird smells?water slightly yellowish in color? it's just some guide not a definite rule nezu. some dudes in the forum suggest 25% to 50% weekly water changes, searched around on the net also the same. but the lfs at my place said no need to change water weekly........so the best method i think is to get a test kit. test regularly maybe few days once so that is quite a good indicator when the water quality is deteriorating and you can change the water...i read also for some they do daily water changes........ |

Everyone's planted aquarium sooo beautiful, even for a small 7.5 in one! don't scoop the water out it would cause alot of ermmm turbulence in the water. use a plastic pipe to siphon the water out. also dun just pour the water in. it would cause alot or turbulence as well. the turbulence would change your aquascape if its too strong sumore your fish later Will get my husband to learn to do this lah, more soothing to look at... Hmm, change 30%-50% water only ah? How do you guys change 30%-50% only? Scoop the water out or use those hose thingy? Sorry ahh kacau ask different topic Thanks. QUOTE(krynzpeaches @ Mar 22 2007, 06:51 PM) Wowww! Everyone's planted aquarium sooo beautiful, even for a small 7.5 in one! You can use a hose and connect to the outlet of yr filter..Once the water is coming out from the hose. Then you can just take it out from the outlet and place it inside the aquarium. Beside water change, you need to dose the liquid fertilizer and some trimming on the aquatic plants. Will get my husband to learn to do this lah, more soothing to look at... Hmm, change 30%-50% water only ah? How do you guys change 30%-50% only? Scoop the water out or use those hose thingy? Sorry ahh kacau ask different topic Thanks. KP CRS is Crystal Red Shrimp. The first batch was released from Japan and arrived in Singapore years ago. A piece was sold at S$8000. I know there are some people said what is the point to spend few hundred to thousand ringgit for a small tiny fella? But when you are really into it. You won't mind to spend that kind of money. Just that you guys not yet how to appreciate the beautiful of CRS. Try to goto www.shrimpnow.com (I am one of the mederator there. But seldom post now.) and www.petshrimp.com for more info. You can have a very low budget to up a planted tank. Gain some knowledge and experience first before you became rich and able to get expensive stuff. I had kept the red, blue, purple and other crayfish before. You can't mix all of them together. Unless you have very big tank. Otherwise, they will fight and eating up the loser. Beside that, you need to have a covered tank. They will climb out through the wire of the pump or hose at the middle of the nite. Then you will find them inside your kitchen or toilet. They will sense which area inside your house is humid and wet. Then they will try to escape. What I did was by placing a plate of water nearby the tank. Then you will find one or two of them resting on the plate at the next day. You can have a pair in a 2ft tank. Prefer to have some gravel, rock and wood for them to rest and hide. They do like strong water flow and full of oxygen. They eat everything...like vegetable, fruits, smaller fishes, pellet. |

Thank you all for the guidance!
Using the siphon sounds pretty much easier, hehehe... Thanks again! Will inform my hubby and hope we can try our hands on a planted aquarium soon In the meantime I'll be by the sidelines to observe and learn more from all of you KP |

what is 'fan shrimp'?
Having a shrimp tank. You need to cycle the tank for 1-2 months. Sometime you will need to take up to 3-4 months. If you are using some better products. May be just a month will do. Cycle the tank, planting some aquatic plants and dose the bacteria will help a lot. Different shrimp will have different session. This session are with yamato, green, bee and red nose. Sometime will have malayan, tiger, cherry..etc. Those you saw in my tank are from another tank of mine. which was a shrimps breeding tank house with more than thousand of shrimps. |

Like i said, they eat everything. You keep plants...they will take it as food. You keep other tank mate. They will take it as food as well. So, do you know the requirement of Paludarium or not? If yes, you will not asking me to keep crayfish inside Paludarium. Futhermore, Paludarium is open space. Crayfish can just climb out easily.
The only choice is a tank with few stones will do. |

QUOTE Quote from http://www.amonline.net.au/factSheets/crayfish.htm like he said? hmm simple setup .. and cheaper too .. hahahaTo set up an aquarium for crayfish you need a good aeration system, 3-5 cm of sand, some small pebbles and some large hollow or cavernous rocks which the crayfish can hide in during the day, and plenty of long waterweeds. i ask about paludarium just bcoz i like how it look .. maybe it can be a nice hangout for the crayfish then can go inside the water back. ofcoz the top will be covered. about planted aquarium. does it really need co2 system even its a small one ? my plan is to use diy yeast co2 and diy co2 reactor. |

Paludarium is nice to keep the dart frog. and do remember there are plenty of plants inside the setup and remember what crayfish favourites.
if you dont want to have co2. then pratice daily water change. |

To anyone interested, look in the other thread aquarium thread, maybe you'd like o hook up with the group that like to go Jalan-Jalan Cari Ikan, on Sundays. This group just started meeting up for Teh Tarik sessions, and you're more than welcome to join us. More heads trying to look for aqua flora and fauna are much better than stumbling around in the dark. Anyways, we've practically gone round looking for LFS in the PJ/Shah Alam area. Tomorrow/today is an outing to Jalan Pasar, aquarium accessories and electrical items day.

michanz yes u can get them from the lfs but the best option would be to ensure u have enough nutrients in your soil and ensure the plants get enough lighting.

I'm wondering if all the stuffs to start up a planted tank is available in Kch or not. Thinking of starting one when I go back to Kch for industrial training, since my dad is keeping some fishes as well, it shouldn't have any problem keeping that tank when I come back to Melaka again. My job is to poison him with the attractive tank and some basic knowledge

the GEX soil or even ADA Aquasoil is available in Irene in Seapark and 88 in Sunwaymas.
You can get the basic 2ft aluminium casing for about rm90. But the stock flourescent casing that comes with most casings aren't suitable for planted tanks. So, you'll have to spend a little extra on getting the proper lights. You might wanna consider getting a fan to keep your temperature down and timer for your lights. |

I think that's part of the fun. Oh ya, one more thing. If you're considering adding fish, don't buy them till after your tank have cycled, or if you have a matured filter. Having a filter to circulate water helps plant growth, IMHO. This post has been edited by SweetPuff: Jul 18 2007, 06:36 PM |

Standard two feet tank is about 11 gallon. Having a dual flourescent 15 watt will give you about 2.7 watts per gallon, which is almost medium lighting already.
Good enough to handle most of the common plants. Do remember, bulbs that comes with the set most of the time gives out either yellowish or pinkish light, which is not suitable for plants. Having good water circulation helps to combat algae growth. This post has been edited by SweetPuff: Jul 18 2007, 06:48 PM |

are u using gravel? or soil? u may need to get some base fert which put under the gravel or soil.
if u go for ADA, get powder sand special for base, soil for top not sure plastic tank. if glass tank 2X 1X 1 = 60 liter of water. at least u need more than 40watt of light... what is extruded styrofoam?? get the Solenoid Regulator is better, 2 1 way check valve, air tube, bubble counter.2 X timer.... some wood if u want to tied moss. tweezer, thermometer, ph tester, Added on July 18, 2007, 11:46 pmdon't hv new pic, post some old one then heheh.. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() don't get this plant. it will died. not suitable for planted tank. ![]() This post has been edited by nezumitaro: Jul 18 2007, 11:46 PM |

cold fusion:
co2 needs to be turned on when there is light. plants needs both light and co2 for photosynthesis. if u turn on co2 at night with your lights off you're wasting money. |

err... the grey colour container? Is it Nutrafin Natural CO2? If so, it should not cost rm89. Price is about rm65 or so only.
With a hang on back filter, you won't need an air pump. For planted tank, I suggest you get a filter meant for a bigger tank. But with HOB, you'll have some trouble with plants near the outflow due to the 'waterfall' effect. I guess for DIY yeast co2, you can't really turn it off. Make sure your tank can support the lights and HOB. And your tank is plastic? Do note that plastic is easily scratched. Especially if you're doing planted tank with rocks. |

Go shop for the container in other LFS. You can try Irene or Yee Fatt.
No need to buy the pre-packaged refills, IMHO. Just buy yeast, baking soda and lots of sugar. Costs only a small fraction of the refill price. Just keep the container. Alternatively, you can always DIY the container easily, though it won't look pretty. |

Just found really really good light casing for you people, but then bloody expensive. Its the type people use for marine lights (you know on boats and such), guaranteed no water leaking in coz there's even an o-ring attached to the cover plus I've seen our crew hose the thing with power jet thingy and they still work hehehe... But got problem, you can only get it Marine supplies shop. Hmmm... wait there's a light shop at the end of Sunway Mentari Business Centre above Domino's Pizza, I think they stock it.

Errr.. Michanz you might want to use a cable tie around the end of your tubing, just a precaution, in case you aren't around and it pops out... LOLx. Unless you actually used the sealant on the connection, then no need. But if I were you, I'd use silicon gel on the connector then shove the tubing in followed by cable tie on the outside of the tubing. Just being safe ma.... I heard some ppl say that bubble counter for DIY CO2 is to prevent the brownish gunk from appearing on the diffusor.
I haven't use it yet, but I sure have the gunk on my glass diffusor. |

imo smaller plants are hard to grow or maintain..
the smaller a plant the harder to take care haha! well co2 tabs are actually really expensive.. DIY niaa water parameters in a smalller tank is harder to maintain than a bigger tank count dat in also.. |

Yep, a larger setup is always easier to maintain, IMHO. Since it's easier to maintain water parameters like pH and temperature, thus making your tank more stable. And mistakes like overdosing of fertilizer is less drastic with a bigger tank.
And with a larger tank you can put in plants with larger leaves like java fern or some of the bigger cryptocorynes. This tank that I have: ![]() have since been converted to a much simpler planted betta tank, since it was way too much hassle to trim the plants so often, due to the small size of the tank. Oh ya, for this that tank, I used DIY co2 with a small 325ml 100plus bottle. Stuff i used was: GEX Soil 5watt PL Temperature about 23-20C (due to air-con, but I have timer to turn on a mini-fan after office hours) --temperature is pretty important to keep most plants healthy, IMHO Psst! Pretty good tips here for mosses: http://www.aquatic-eden.com/2007/07/growin...tic-mosses.html http://www.aquamoss.net Mosses are probably my favourite aquatic plant. NewbieBetta: IMHO, you google for the near ideal water parameters or go to MAC forum (all the planted tank sifus there). Different water parameters for different aquatic flora and fauna. The thing is, you want to make a replica home for your aquatic creatures.

pebbles are ok. drop few drops of vinegar on the rocks. if you see the rocks foamings/bubbling... mean the rock is alkaline. not suitable for planted tank. Unless you have the PH controller or water softerner equipment.

If the environment is best, may change back to the correct shape. But, it may take sometime...
But, for me, main factor that we facing may be temperature. This post has been edited by caseyhoo: Jul 23 2007, 03:44 PM |

QUOTE(NewbieBetta @ Jul 23 2007, 05:49 PM) get a real big container then put ur nano inside the container then fill it with ice around your nano tank..lol If you are doing like that...you need to fill in the ice all the time. And you are unable to control the temperature. The temperature will drop from 30C to 20C. 10C in short period and will kill all of your fauna and flora. If you are not filling in the ice, the temperature went up again. This is cause the trauma or temperature shock for your fauna and flora. |

May be yes. May be no. Mosses growing different shapes in different water condition. If you get it from wild in (malaysia), then I roughly know what is that. But if you bought frm lfs n lfs also dont know. it is hard then. gonna send to lab to verify.

errr.... itssg, which lab you gonna send it to? Singapore? waaaa...... I think since my 2 footer is cracked, I think i go start a submersed/immersed planted tank, that's after I try fixing the crack with silicon sealant (when I actually get round to it!!) Otherwise, my other choice is to make the crack a wee bit bigger, then go plant Japanese roses in it.... lolx

Yeah, trimming the moss might be the right thing to do. Also, I learned that if you lay your mosses too thick, the bottom part will turn brown.

Geediver, which part of your tank cracked? Dont fix lar...just get a new one. The cracked tank can make it as vivarium... growing wild orchid and pitcher plants inside.
The mosses i send to some local universities lab. But not SG. I know you are thinking a forum owner in SG n helping to verify the mosses and liverworts. As I sent to him many times. He only helped me to verify 1 time only. And never send back any moss back to me as return. So...I give up. Since local lab have a link with the same professor in SG. Michanz...The moss selling in AI could be java moss. Beside the weeping moss which require to trim most of the time. The rest of mosses, i never trim... |

The plant in the 7th picture ( the one with the Otocinclus - correct me if I am wrong lying on the white rock) looks like Marsellia spp ( 4 leaf clover plant ) This genus ranges from Australia through the pacific region. If given the right conditions it can become rampant - might need trimming. |

coldfusion,
need to get your lighting up fast. Before your plants yellow. Also, do consider adding driftwood tied with a bit of java moss to make things look more interesting. For layout, I guess if you landscape your slope from back to front, your tank will look much bigger. Also, please consider some midground plants. For DIY yeast, i go with 1/4 yeast, 1/2 baking soda, and 2 cups of sugar for a 1.5 litre bottle. For the Nutrafin CO2 bottle, I use slightly less than 1/4 yeast, 1/2 baking soda, fill sugar up to the first indicator and water up to the next indicator. More yeast = more CO2 generated but runs out much faster. This post has been edited by SweetPuff: Aug 2 2007, 09:40 AM |

my DIY co2 can last for 1 ~ 1 and half months with 1 bps..
just put more sugar and less yeast and it will last longer and make sure to pour those water or those white jelly out bout every one week and add some yeast and also some fresh water.. cuz those alchoholic water will kill the yeast.. Depending on what type of siput you get, if it looks like a normal siput babi, then they're probably normal pond snails, which can damage your plants.
As for puffer, get the dwarf puffer. Other puffers aren't really suitable. But consider that you will have to take care of the puffer once the snails are all gone... |

QUOTE(ekiddie @ Aug 26 2007, 03:19 AM) isk... all those tank is making me eager to start one... izzit really very izzit to start a 'simple' tank? wat if just moss tank? easy? It really depends on several factors:1. Your budget. 2. Preference for high tech vs low tech. 3. How much space you have. 4. Maintenance. 5. Knowledge. 6. Friends that 'poison' you into buying stuff. 7. People who work at Fish shops who get you to buy everything and anything, to boost commissions. Ok back to the subject on hand. A moss tank, IMO, is as low tech and 'easy' as it gets. 1. Most basic: Get a glass container, fill it with water, buy Java moss, dump the moss in and then let it sit in low light area, like your bathroom. You're done!! Don't forget to change the water every week, you don't want to be breeding mozzies. 2. Beginner moss tank: Google for articles related to mosses (especially the moss you want). Java Moss (Vesicularia Dubyana), is an unusual plant because it does not have roots to speak of, will sink to the bottom, will grow like weeds under the crappiest conditions (no gravel, low light, no fertilizer, most water temp ranges and most PH ranges) and doesn't look too shabby either What's most is, the Moss loves stagnant water and lots of nitrite. In fact it will THRIVE on high nitrite levels and left over food and fish fecal matters. Article taken from Java moss for betta (Siamese fighting fish) breeding This info is just to kick start you in the right direction. You want moss? hahahahah. yeah a moss tank is relatively simple to keep but do keep in mind that mosses are natural filters. They are excellent at filtration but the down side is the moss will have gunk in between them so do clean them upabout once a week or forthnightly by gently shaking them up a little.

i just want my tanks to be filled wif greens... hehe... but i'm not on any CO2 or etc and as i've read from de links of articles (thx...) java moss will easily grows ha?! hehe... o yah... i don put de tank on any fluorescent lighting wor... just norm indoor lighting... will it still survive tat way ka?? they are really 'tat' die hard ha?? will buy some for a start and tie it on my driftwood for a start... any java moss donater?? hahaaa! Latest update on my tank --- its going low tech. Reason: gonna shoot off to the islands soon (work ma) then will only get back like every month or so.
Up for grabs (PM for price): Blyxa Japonica, potted Dwarf swords, potted Anubias Nana, rock Riccia Fluitans, wire mesh Although I do have excessive amounts of Giant Vals, I recommend you go grab your own at the nearest lake (with clean water). For that matter, while you're grabbing buckets full of Vals, you might also wanna grab tons of hornwort; they grow side by side. Word of advice: don't fall into the lake!!! My moss aren't going to anyone of you, coz I love them too much hahahah.. plus they're staying in the low tech. Added on February 4, 2008, 6:46 amLatest stuff at NA: Tons of Nerite snails up for grabs plus you get CNY oranges for every purchase made lolx... Just because most websites and forum says mosses are hardy and low maintenance doesn't mean that you do not need to give the mosses a good environment for growth. From my observation, mosses thrive better in a tank with movement meaning there's some kind of water movement; they also thrive in clean water meaning you need some kind of filter; also a good and constant temperature would further enhance the growth ie 22 - 26C.The moss that I planted will die after some time and I noticed there're some algae on it. For my mosses, this is my specs:
1. Constant 25C water temp (courtesy of 2 fans), 2. Water movement via water output from external filter, 3. DIY co2 (free flow 24/7), 4. 36W PL-L 4 hours a day, 5. Shrimps to clean it. Don't forget to give it a wash/shake it around; once in awhile. So no sophisticated co2 or high lighting for it. Mosses need clean running water to thrive. Read somewhere a LFS in S'pore actually does WC (25%) on their moss tank every 2 days (and its a 6 feet tank)!!! |

I'm going to start a tank soon. Mine's 2ft. I guess I have everything noted down except for one thing.
I can't decide which brand of filter to use. I've been reading about EHEIM - good but expensive. I plan to have my tank go low tech first. So, just wondering if any of you can recommend me a nice filter, but not too expensive. Budget for filter will be about RM75. I hope to get a HOB filter. |

Berudu-X: what type of tank do you intend on keeping: planted, fish or both?
Please read up by googling on pros & cons on the differences with regards to both types of filtration systems. |

hmmm filter if you have low budget just get a canister filter like cy-20, 2ft don't use HOB lah
but make sure u check the bio ring. cos some bio ring will raise PH which is not good for your plants |

Berudu: If you do get the Resun CY-20, the bio-rings are ok. Just remove the charcoal and replace with Bamboo charcoal which you can get at Slippery Little Suckers (http://www.slipperylittlesuckers.com.my) for details. Bamboo charcoal: you can either break it up or leave it whole, then just add directly into your tank (your moss will be soooo grateful).

QUOTE(nezumitaro @ Feb 15 2008, 08:51 AM) what i have is what i inherited from the previous owner, which is a 2ft tank and a overhead box filter. i'm getting a light source from my boss, but he tells me its not powerful enough but could be just nice for java moss and ferns. i'm going to DIY my CO2.so, this tells me i need substrates, filter media (maybe a new filter instead of the ugly overhead box), a timer for lighting, fertilizer. i'm still wondering what other 'chems' i need besides anti-chlorine. right now, i'm reading up on how to cycle a tank. |

this is what you can do.
get a ph tester, buy some bio - ring. put the bio-ring with tap water(ph 7) in a cup. test the ph see if it shoot up. if not then the bio-ring is safe to use. put the soil in, add water, run your filter for about 3 weeks, same time you can water change until ur tank water is clear. put anti-chlorine everytime you water change. after 3 weeks. the benefit bacteria and the cycle of the tank should be good enough for the plants:) what is the budget for your soil? cos good soil will make your life easier. Light, depance on what plants u wanna keep. possible to show a pic of your light? |

Tadpole: GEX, ADA & JBL soil are priced just about the same. If you do plan to use GEX, I'd suggest you get the 3kg Red packaging one, its shrimp friendly. Why, you may ask. Compare the soil granule size. Easier for the shrimps to push around. Another reason, since you're going for moss & fern set-up, Cherry shrimps are the cheapest and most efficient moss cleaners. Just remember to bring your temperature down to about 25C with a dual fan setup, good amount of water flow, some DIY co2 and light, mosses thrive in well ventilated & clean tanks.
The various websites do say that moss & fern don't need much light or co2, but do remember you're are recreating nature in an environment devoid of water movement. With addition of co2, light & water current; your mosses will grow bushy and the colors will be more vibrant, trust me I speak from experience. In my shrimp tank set-up, I don't feed the shrimps reason being there's enough dead particles in the water for it to feed on plus I don't want to add to the bio load of the tank. All I do is top-up water every other day and do a water change every week. Addition of Seachem's Flourish Excel ensures that my plants get the extra Carbon. When adding chemicals into the water, its advisable to add half the dosage initially so as not to 'shock' your flora & fauna; then increase slowly until you arrive at the required dosage. When you first introduce the mosses & ferns, also get a few bunches of Cabomba Caroliniana (one of the fastest growing stem plants). Why you need to have plants that suck up the excess nutrients in the water therefore ensuring less likelyhood of an algae bloom. This post has been edited by geediver: Feb 20 2008, 12:12 PM |

tadpole... welcome to the planted tank hobby...
well, from what i understand, you have a 2 feet tank with an overhead filter.. and you plan to use a DIY co2... also, the soil thing... well, i say, the overhead filter would be a NO NO thing in a planted tank.. why? it will cause your co2 to diffuse at a very fast rate... which leads to algae problems as your plants won't be able to do photosynthesis at its peak and this is when the algae comes in... also, when your co2 level is not being supplied constantly, you plants won't do as good... well, of course, without co2, you could grow java ferns... and mosses too.... option for a canister filter is the best... Substrate, well, simple, ask yourself, don't talk about aquatic plants, talk about plants in general... they grow on soil or sand... as sand is something solid without any ferts or organic matter, but soil does... therefor, plants thrive with soil.. Soil... not that i especially like ADA and hate other brands like JBL,GEX or whatsoever brands, but from experience, ADA is the best... In fact, ADA is more towards a plug-and-play-and-you-wont-fail-if-you-follow-the-instructions... if you want, you could option for ADA Malaya or Africana as ADA Amazonia would be very hard to handle as it is the richest among the 2 other type of ADA soil.... well, last advise, don't be penny wise pound foolish... no offence... Lights, for a 2' tank, you could use a 36watts Philips PL-L with 6500k or you could simply use a 55watts Dymax PL-L... the 55watts PL-L is about 22 inches in lenght, so, your whole tank will have enough lights.... (only apply to 2' tank and depending on the type of plants you want to keep) Fan, as someone mentioned earlier, a fan is a must to keep the temperature down, but evaporation rate would be very high and you got to top up water like everyday... but it does bring down the temperature.. temperature is crucial in keeping a planted tank... if you don't believe, try to get a bunch of plants, put some in a pail of water, and another in a pastic bag sealed in a fridge. see which one goes bad 1st... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- things to look out for... try to get a better canister filter... see the wattage... keep in mind, you are having a 2' tank.. and your water volume is small... additional wattage will bring your water temp up... this is a long running hobby, so don't be penny wise, pound foolish... that is why most of the people who is penny wise and pound foolish because they dont get the point where they need the hardware which can sustain the tank... therefor, they option for a cheaper alternative and 2 months later, they go around and say fish keeping is hard... which is not at all... no offense to everyone, to anyone... RESEARCH RESEARCH and RESEARCH!!!! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- pinchboyz, nice HINO on your avatar with huge maro... thumbs up... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ nezumitaro, DW (driftwood) will lower the pH a lil, but tannins can block the light penetration... soil brings down the pH.. and also the hardness.. everyone else who needed advise and suggestions, please add me in MSN ... icthinus@hotmail.com... ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- been in this hobby for 20years... >5years for planted tanks.. of course, lots of money wasted... therefor, i would not hope anyone here burn their money for experience.. i'm here to guide, advise, critique and comment as a hobbyist which holds a lot of passion for anything aquatic.... and now, have fun... and sorry if i offended anyone... lies sound better, but truth makes life easier.. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ geediver, your nick is familiar.....hmm... have i met you somewhere? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- attached below is a 14 feet tank i recently do for Eco Park Clubhouse at Alam Setia Shah Alam ... the 14ft tank is so well done too... post more pic if you are free.. hehe we need more poison! yes soil is the best to lower down ph. and agree DW will yellow the water, but guess there are alot youngster here.. its abit pricy for them to get ADA or GEX. if using holland sand. is there any way better to pull down the ph? QUOTE(nezumitaro @ Feb 20 2008, 03:01 PM) ok, thanks!Added on February 21, 2008, 1:07 pmHi, I own a 2' tank as well and I think your advice is very helpful. Lights, for a 2' tank, you could use a 36watts Philips PL-L with 6500k or you could simply use a 55watts Dymax PL-L... the 55watts PL-L is about 22 inches in lenght, so, your whole tank will have enough lights.... (only apply to 2' tank and depending on the type of plants you want to keep) Where can I get these kind of lights? In normal LFS, they normally only have the 15W type for a 2' tank.... I'm using two 18" Arcadia white light, do you think they are bright enough for my tank? Fan, as someone mentioned earlier, a fan is a must to keep the temperature down, but evaporation rate would be very high and you got to top up water like everyday... but it does bring down the temperature.. temperature is crucial in keeping a planted tank... Not enough space to hang a fan.... if you don't believe, try to get a bunch of plants, put some in a pail of water, and another in a pastic bag sealed in a fridge. see which one goes bad 1st... Thanks! This post has been edited by frankzane: Feb 21 2008, 01:07 PM |

peat moss don't make water brownish eh?
frankzane, light is about 1 liter water for 1W of light. 18W X 2 is not enought for a 2ft, but ask u mentioned before you will only keeping low-tech plants. so it maybe enought. why 2 ft tank no space hang fan ah? |

Fan does not need to be the 4" type mah.....
you could option for those commercial type of fans for aquarium use... like Mr.Cool 200... or simply DIY a 2" fan... but you'll need some sort of adapter... for those who know me, i still don't know who are you guys... LOL... sorry... those who ask about lights.... well, 18watts x 2pcs is definitely not enough... another thing about light is that.... its not about how many lights you have... you can have 10pcs of 18watts FL light which sums up to 180watts.. but a 150watts Metal Halide is way better than 10pcs FL light... why??? 10pcs of FL light might be very bright to our eyes... but its the intensity that counts... you need light which is powerful enough to penetrate deep inside the water column... not just about brightness... |

In most cases, after you attach the lighting system for a 2' tank you end up with about 2 inches of space at the back of the tank for your fan. Unless you get light casings with feet/legs which you can prop the lights up with.
For anyone getting new lighting systems for your tank, get those with legs; so there's enough space between the light casing and the surface of the water. The fan should be tilted at 30-40° angle from the surface of the water, not placed perpendicular to the water surface. Why? You may ask, simple common sense, if you have the light directly above the fan you'll only be ventilating the water surface with hot air from the lights. A dual fan is sufficient for a 2' tank because even if you hook up a quadruple fan unit, you'll still only achieve a maximum of 25°C if your ambient/room temperature is 30°C. |

LOL sure u canot remember who is who lah.. u too famous liao so everyone know u. cos i see most ppl still with budget, who feel soil is pricy sure they go for DIY co2. and DIY CO2 maxi only can tahan till 2ft tank ( plants also only so so). so i am thinking what is the best way for them to lower down the ph without spend much. as you mention a small bag of soil is good idea too... will it be difference if the small bag of soil put in the filter or in the tank? |

just wanna ask something...hopefully its in the right section.
i heard from a friend that putting ceramic rings into the gravel will help to naturally "process" the waste from fish. Does this have any truth in it? |

QUOTE(ynneb25 @ Feb 22 2008, 10:43 PM) just wanna ask something...hopefully its in the right section. well, it does not need to be ceramic ring... it could be anything... but best, something with poresi heard from a friend that putting ceramic rings into the gravel will help to naturally "process" the waste from fish. Does this have any truth in it? let me try and explain it to you... process waste can be ammonia, nitrite or nitrate... well, ammonia and nitrite can be processed with aerobic ( with oxygen ) beneficial bacteria and nitrate can be processed with anaerobic (without oxygen) beneficial bacteria... since this is a PLANTED TANK thread... i assume you are talking about aerobic beneficial bacteria.. what your friend say is true.. (well, again, i support his statement) in fact, bacteria stick to any surface they can find... glass, air hose, rocks, sand, soil... BUT WHY CERAMIC RINGS OR SOMETHING WITH PORES??? its because the above mentioned can store more bacterias... (i hope you get what i mean) in a planted tank, the idea of having additional/ more beneficial bacteria below gravel is mainly for processing ammonia... you see, stems and roots will decompose beneath the gravel, which leads to creating more ammonia... waste from fish and other critters will also slip underneath the gravel in time... thus creating more ammonia.. but in this case, your gravel need space for water to flow thru to bring oxygen to the aerobic bacterias... example of anaerobic conditions are... you are using fine sand... very fine sand... you did not siphon your gravel in ages, thus resulting your gravel to be more compact... (yes, this does happen..) conclusion, what your friend say is right... but whether you need it or not, its another matter altogether... i've never done this before... because i control my bioload... the best way is to do water change every week, and do gravel vacumm... P/S : i've never done this before, but thru my understanding in this hobby, it does create a better environment for your plants, but if its not necessary, why go thru all the troubles... DO NOT QUOTE ME ON THIS, ABOVE GIVEN ADVISE AND COMMENTS IS BASED IMHO. HOPE IT HELPS... PEACE. Nezu: IMHO, if either the Rotala sp Vietnam or Najan turns reddish most likely its due to the amount of light its absorbing. This may not even occur in another tank with the same water & light parameters. Its what some of us call 'am kong'/luck I guess. Some of my plants don't even have documented red shoots but somehow I sometimes get them turning red once its near the surface. (Mind you, my water surface is 1 cm under my lights). Reason: my tank is vertically challenged not enough height.

geediver, nezu & ggMing:
thanks for all the advice. i've already set my tank up. its doing pretty well. i went for the pennywise-pound-foolish (no offence taken this is what i have now: Hardware: Hagen HOB filter Bio-rings 18W PL light <- given to me, beggars can't be choosers. CO2 diffuser DIY CO2 (which is driving me crazy!) 2ft. tank <-given Hardscape: Huge tree-trunk of a driftwood <- given to me, but i'll split it soon Lava rock Plants: Tenellus Java Fern Anubias Cabomba Mayaca Anacharis <- this is a MONSTER of a plant! grows very fast!!! Flaming moss (? because i'm still not sure) Fish: Guppies Tetras Substrate: Holland sand JBL base fert Soon to come (for now): Thermometer Fan A nicer, thinner driftwood Java moss Windelov Fern Otos Shrimps <- much later when my tank is fully stable It is very rewarding to see my tank doing well. But i know if i buy better lights, it'll do better. I've heard about SLS's workshops, hope to attend the next one soon. I think i'll learn a lot more. once again, thanks for all the advice and tips. |

no problem at all...
and for diffuser, if not mistaken, those glass once can't be used as it needs a lot of pressure to force the bubble thru.... well, IMHO.. |

One can actually use the glass diffuser, provided you are using a "more than 4-DIY co2" setup. Then there'd be enough pressure. Don't forget to use a check valve to stop back-flow and a bubble counter to further diffuse the gas.
Get Seachem Flourish Excel to supplement Carbon to your plants. Increase dosage to the recommended dosage on the bottle slowly: so that your plants can get used to it, likened to breaking-in your plants. Also sudden addition of supplements may sometimes promote algae growth. Addition of Ferrite/root tabs, would enhance the root systems of your stem plants. But only use root tabs in your future plantings because your JBL base fert would be more than adequate for the time being. |

ggMing is right about the glass diffuser. needs a lot of pressure. i think i need a 2-bottle DIY CO2 setup. the bottle that i have is leaking CO2. i need to silicone glue the holes.
i shook the CO2 bottle today, there was enough pressure to force the bubbles out, but only for about 5 second. then, the water seep back into the tube. i need a check valve. i guess this will be my sunday project! |

If you guys wanna go marine then get the biggest tank you guys can afford, or else if its only 3 feet, not really viable in terms of budget plus you will only have a minimum amount of marine life. IMHO, a 'high' tank is the better choice for a marine tank, the ability to re-create a coral wall is more stunning than rock islands formation.
If you're interested to look at marine life in the wild, head on over to Sphere Divers, these photos belong to a friend of mine. The photo album is from his extensive collection of diving photos. This post has been edited by geediver: Mar 7 2008, 09:16 PM |

Hi all, currently i got a small tank setup for around 1 months about 1.5 feet in size...lots of plants, quite crowded i can say. For the CO2 i'm using the Nutrafin CO2 system and the GH drop to < 3. Is it because of the CO@ system too much for a small tank?
Added on March 10, 2008, 4:57 pm QUOTE(cavien @ Mar 6 2008, 06:06 PM) a small tank around 1.5 feet and the basic setup is between 100 - 200 budget...it also depends on what kind of item and quality of the item u use...hehehe.If the gravel and stuff u use ADA or SERA, of course expensive...heheh Added on March 10, 2008, 5:16 pmHere's my 1.5 feet tank... Hi Nezumitaro,
Can you tell me from which Aquatic shop you're getting all those nice plants? The local Aquatic shop around my area in Subang doesn't sell those, but it's for their display only. But the test kit indicates GH < 3 is not ok...Cherry Shrimps had died and only the fishes and Yamato shrimp are surviving....heheh Does anyone know for what reason the water turn to yellowish? Even though im performing water change up to 50%, it still turns to yellowish the next day. Btw, tonite i'm getting a 2.5 feet tank from one of the Lowyat member, and that's my next project. Probably it'll be easier to maintain a 2 feet tank compared to 1 feet tank. Added on March 11, 2008, 11:57 amMy 1 feet tank specs: 1 feet tank 1 hang-on filter 1 Nutrafin CO2 system 1 glass diffuser 1 fan 1 FL 18w 3 Neon Tetra 1 Kulih Loach 2 Bumble Bee 2 Danios Zebra 1 Guppy baby 1 Puffer 1 Golden Algae Eater 1 Oto 1 Yamato shrimp Lots of plants, dunno whats the name but probably you guys are more familiar compared to me, i'm still trying to learn all those names...heheh The water chemistry are perfect.....until~~~ after 2 weeks of using the CO2 system, GH went crazy...I used the 5 in 1 test kit. Yea, probably some of you would say "Heck, you tank is like Sarawak Rumah Panjang, 3 family in 1 roof, crowded"....heheheh So far all the inhabitants are doing fine with each other, no fin nipping from puffer or weird behavior from the chinese algae eater...amen~~ hehe This post has been edited by chong82: Mar 11 2008, 12:03 PM |

the fish and shrimp shouldn't die even gh is 0, i mean shrimp wouldn't die immediately or die in a few day with GH 0, it can be the benefit bacteria not growing well yet.
what soil you are using? yellowish water can be the soil or wood if u hv any. 1ft 50% WC is not good for the fish and shrimp. make it 20% X 2 times a week. most of the plants i get from firends. but i order plant from aqua world in damansara permai. ss19 NA, those in display tank u can ask if they sale. ask them to cut for u 88 sunway mas sometime hv some plants too.. sls near subang air port also. yes 2 ft or 2.5t tank is easier compare to nano |

QUOTE(chong82 @ Mar 11 2008, 11:50 AM) Hi Nezumitaro, Err... chong82, go to LFS List for near complete list for what you looking for, especially the address for the LFS in Subang. Can you tell me from which Aquatic shop you're getting all those nice plants? The local Aquatic shop around my area in Subang doesn't sell those, but it's for their display only. Btw, your hairgrass planting looks too bushy. plant 1-2 only not 3-5. I'm sure you already trimmed back on the hairgrass before planting. Add more stem plants in the tank, get as much as you possibly can. Advice #1: If buying stem plants are too expensive, just head on to the nearest fishing pond, you can get free Cabomba, to see what it looks like click HERE. Before you add the plants that you get from the pond into your tank, make sure you wash it and then leave it to soak overnight. Just in case, you might end up with extra parasites like snails. The white sand is too straight, and I believe its Silica sand (not sure though) but its gonna screw up your water parameters. I had that once, and 1 week after adding, algae bloom! So I don't use it anymore instead I use Shirui sand (get it at Slippery Little Suckers, Ara Damansara - look at the LFS List for complete address) Nezu: I damn jealous look at your jungle.... |

Geediver, That's the roman style road, that's why its so straight...heheh Actually I just wanted a short pathway lookalike and I don't have enough white sand, so it's short and straight, since mine are small tank and this is my 2nd attempt with a month's experience in freshwater aquarium, so there's no Amano style in my tank, instead I'm trying to get familiarized with aquascaping...Now im eyeing on my friend's 5 feet tank...kekeke I'm going to get more stem plants tonight, but what are your recommendations for starter? I just added Red-stem Milfoil and Brazillian Milfoil. Thanks for providing the hyperlink to the list. I frequent SS19 NA alot since 2 - 3 years ago, but now only started this hobby. i am sure the plants are not healthy in your case, its because of not enoguht light..
is your tank 2 X 1 X 1? your tank at least with 45 liter of water, basically u need 45 W of light. if you are keeping stem plants too. as for the fert, u can get ADA step 1 This post has been edited by nezumitaro: Mar 14 2008, 08:56 AM |

HOB filter are not suitable for planted aquarium, it'll blow away all the CO2. Not to say blow but there's another term for it. and for ferterlizer i just have ADA brighty k only, what else must i have bcoz the plants are not growth healthy, and become thinner. 1 more question is why after put co2(before this using tablet co2) some plants leaves and roots become yellow ? You got only 1 20w light? Too low i think, only around 0.2w per litre. If im not mistaken 0.4 - 0.5w per litre is the minimum. Adding 1 more 20w light might help a bit, but its still consider low light tank. Mine was 2 x 15w light, might change the FL to higher watts... 2 feet tank (standard) = 70+- litres 20w / 70 litres = 0.3w per litre Where did you get the 20w light? Izzit FL or T5? chong: Your stem plant in the front right forward of the moss covered DW, its going to overtake your background plants in about 1 month. Suggestion: When you trim, trim as low as possible, then cucuk the new trimmings at the back. Why? So the old plants will have 2 shoots instead of one, and if you lighting and fert enough you gonna have nice bush soon

Oh yea, i've checked the water chemistry these past few days, and notice there's no amonnia spike, so i think the cycle havent start yet. I've studied some 'silent cycling' method and none have mention anything regarding how to start the ammonia spike by having the plant there, so my understanding was if there's no inhabitants and no fish food, so where does the ammonia come from and without that how to start the cycle? Hope i can get some answers here. Thanks so much for those replying to my post.. This post has been edited by chong82: Mar 15 2008, 04:25 PM |

Chong: what you DON'T want is the ammonia spike!!! So don't go praying for that to happen. In a fishless/food-less tank, ammonia can be gotten from dead/rotting leaves/plants. To avoid any excessive ammonia in the water column, try to do 10% WC at least once a week. The main purpose of a WC is to dilute 'xx%' of the existing water. Don't do more than 10% in the first 3 months though, IMHO.
Also make sure you top up the water, make a small marking anywhere on the tank so that you'll be reminded visually to top up the water. Topping up water also dilutes excessive chemicals in the water column. WC is recommended whenever you trim your plants. Just use a small tubing attached to something solid like a chopstick and suck the extra dead objects from between the leaves, on the soil/sand. Why the chopstick, well its better than sticking your hand in there right. Since your hand will cause excessive water movement thereby disturbing the substrate, then water murky for awhile. Good to use tubing coz there will come a time when your plants are more compact than now, and you'll need to get in between them. I've said over and over again regarding moss growth, they LOVE clean water with water movement. Another thing, once you've setup everything stop moving things around in your tank, let it stabilize and commence growth. After 2 months or so, you can try getting a pot of Blyxa Japonica --> reason: Blyxa is one of the fussiest plants I've planted, it requires matured substrate. Just cucuk all in one place and a month later you should be able to see 1 super bushy plant. |

i would suggest you do 2 things to your tank 1. put a black tape on it's borders. it'll make the tank look nice, as if photo frame 2. put black background my thoughts la. that's what i did with my tank and i loved the effect. |

QUOTE(goldfries @ Mar 31 2008, 12:58 PM) is there a reason why your tubes are around the front? there is limited space, i only can put there, somemore lazy to remove when took this pic....i would suggest you do 2 things to your tank 1. put a black tape on it's borders. it'll make the tank look nice, as if photo frame 2. put black background my thoughts la. that's what i did with my tank and i loved the effect. the background, i put white, purposely 1.... |

ok. that one preferential la.
cos for me, i don't like to see tubings in front or behind. black background to make the tank look nicer, the color contrast of black background and the fish + deco (aquascape) will make a difference. did you visit Pet World Malaysia 2008? |

I was there yesterday missed the prize presentation by half hour... Nasir's tank definitely rocks la! Bugger 1 look at the rooting system of his dwarf hairgrass also I damn jealous sial. I guess all he did was drain water, bring the whole tank to MidValley and then add water and watch the rest struggle. Anyway, if Nasir comes in here "Yo dude you rock!!!"

When planting for the first time especially the plants with short roots, MAKE SURE you don't have fishes that like to disturb the substrate, example: bandaraya or bottom dwellers (fishes with the mouth facing downwards). If your substrate is light then some fauna with claws will also uproot your plants, when they pick up the substrate to release food entrapped between the substrate.

Nano aquariums are aquariums that are smaller than 1 feet. Look at this

masterzyie: maybe you go Google for it first to look at the requirements before getting Marimo balls and investing heavy equipment (chiller). Look at it from this point of view, will it add to the aesthetics of your tank? Another point to consider is, lowering your temperature, 25-28C with air-conditioning or fan? Malaysia normal room temp is on average 30-33C. If your temp fluctuates between 25-30 then I guess its a fan you're using. Maximum cooling temp I can get is 25C with fan (and it doesn't matter how many fans I use). More fans means faster water evaporation for me.
