i stayed in dream house which is 10-15 mins walk from the taipei main mrt station...te room is less than NT2000 for 2 person. u can check their website for more info. washing machine provided, private toilet. or u can also try hotel 73 which is located near chiang kai shek memorial.

Public transport is ok if you r willing to spend on cab...

Yes...Very comfortable...It's actually a 7 to 8 storey building like hostel type resides by the local university students. Some of the units have been converted to hostels. Although from outside looks abit old but the room and interior is very new and clean just like what is shown in the website.
It's really very very near to Shilin Night Market. I went to the night market everynight after day trip to other places.

Hi,

I think I will take the fun backpacker taipei....

My draft itinerary:

Day 1:

There are three options you may want to consider.
1. Take a Ubus shuttle bus to Taoyuan High Speed Rail Station (TW$30/pax). Then transfer to the Taiwan High Speed Rail to Taipei. The ride to Taipei will take only 20 minutes with a brief stop at Banciao Station along the way. This will cost either you TW$155 (non-reserved ticket with free seating) or TW160 (standard fare with assigned seating). The Taiwan High Speed Rail will stop at Taipei Main Station. When you get to Taipei Main Station, transfer to the MRT Danshui Line (淡水). Get off at MRT Jiantan Station (劍潭). Shilin Night Market is there. The MRT ride from MRT Taipei Main Station (台北車站) to MRT Jiantan Station (劍潭) will cost you only TW$20/pax (TW$16 only if you have Easycard). Easycard is Taipei's version of Touch n Go.

2. Take the Kuo-kuang Motor Transport Kuokuang line directly to Taipei Main Station. This will cost you TW$125. Then take the MRT Danshui Line (淡水).

3. Take a cab directly to your hotel. You should be ready to fork out around TW$1000 - TW$1200 or probably even more depending on the traffic condition.

Depends on how many people are travelling, if there are only 2 or 3 of you. Taking the bus/Taiwan High Speed Rail/MRT are probably cheaper.

**make sure you align at MRT Jiantan Station (劍潭). The Shilin Night Market is there and not MRT Shilin Station (士林). The Shilin Night Market is quite a long walk away from MRT Shilin Station (士林) despite its name.

** Taipei Main Station also known as Taipei Station or Taipei Railway Station.

Assume you go from your hotel, you can simply take the MRT to Ximending. You will however, have to change train at MRT Taipei Main Station (台北車站). The MRT system in Taipei is ranked as one of the top 3 in the world. You'll be impressed. It is punctual and train frequency is great too unlike our shameless LRT.

QUOTE(MandyG @ Jan 25 2011, 05:18 AM)
Day 3:
Taipei 101
Again, you can go there using MRT. You will also need to change train at MRT Taipei Main Station (台北車站) and change to MRT Nangang Line (南港). Align at MRT Taipei City Hall Station (市政府).

QUOTE(MandyG @ Jan 25 2011, 05:18 AM)
then Linjiang Street Market or Tonghua (still dunno how get there)
You can take a bus directly from outside of MRT Jiantan Station (劍潭). You can refer to the bus route map so to find out which bus you should take. The public bus in Taipei charge a one flat rate of TW$20/pax to anywhere in Taipei (TW$15/pax if you pay using Easycard).

If my memory serves me correctly, there is one Din Tai Fung outlet at Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Department Store (新光三越) in the Xinyi Business District. There are four Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Department Store buildings in Xinyi Business District and all are connected by several bridges. How to get there ? Same way as how to go to Taipei 101.

I just found out my old breakdown on my cost..Actually I only used up RM2000 as that's the amt I brought in haha!!

Accomodation? - I stayed in hostel wth shared batroom, free cooking, free wifi & even free usage washing machine.. blush.gif

I went during winter mth i.e early Dec...Not as cold as Genting..Weather never touch below 18C during my trip in 2009! and on my arrival date temp was at 26C damn so hot during winter!!
..Suprisingly Hong Kong/Macau much cooler during the same time..So in Oct, Weather probably still sunny & hot. just like KL Jan'2011 temp right of ~ 28C ..Check weather chart on pg1

QUOTE(stimix @ Mar 1 2010, 10:45 AM)
Depending on your budget-lah. I spent RM520 per pax excluding air ticket for 6D5N in Taiwan. Total inc of tickets was RM1300.

Stayed in budget HOSTEL (RM30/nite/pax), less on souvenirs & eat hawker food (~RM15/pax/day). Spent mostly on transportation & entrance fee...

1) Easycard (Taiwan Touch & Go) - RM60/pax (for 6D5N) - MRT, bus & train
2) Taroko train ticket - RM80/pax return.
3) Taroko day taxi cum personal driver - RM220 or RM55/pax
4) Taipei 101 entrance RM42/pax. Museum - RM18/pax

Overall inclusive of air tickets, I spent ~RM5000 (I brought in RM2000, flight tickets - RM3,120, & used up 100%) ..i.e RM1300/pax inc of ticket & RM520/pax exc air ticket. one of my lowest budget traveling....

Except for their food which is almost same pricing as KL to my suprise (Avg ~ RM4 to RM5/plate of hawker food during 2009), Shoppings & souvenirs is not really cheap so I dun really shop. And those shopping malls in Taipei is not as modern & huge like the one in KL. The biggest I went is the Mall behind Taipei Main station & opposte the main station (Can't really recall dy) ..Just windows shoppinmg..nothing to buy. blush.gif

Those shoppings at Ximending is something like Petaling St & so do Wufenpu more like Bangkok Chinatown...You can get cheaper in KL

There are many new high-end shopping centres now in Taipei located mainly in the Xinyi Business District such as Shin Kong Mitshukoshi and Bellavita.

For my 10 day trips, I spent an average NTD500 per night for accommodation ( all is en-suite bathroom). NTD540 for HSR from taoyuan to Taichung. NTD 4000 per person for 4 days full time taxi (Taichung to Puli to Sunmoonlake to Cingjing to Hehuanshan
to Taroko Gorge to Hualien to Yilan to Jiufen/Kee Lung to Taipei. Day 5 onwards only spend NTD500 for MRT. The taxi is very cheap too especially if u have 4 ppl. It's cheaper and time saving than taking MRT and then Bus to certain destination. For eg. Let's say u want to go to Wufenbu from Shihlin. If u go by Jiantan MRT to the nearest station will cost u about NTD30-40 plus u have to transit by bus to Wufenbu will cost u another NTD20-30..it's better directly by taxi from Shihlin which will cost somewhere NTD200/4 person only NTD50 per person.Food spend is on average NTD500 perday.Overall my 10 days trip only cost me NTD 15000 excluding airticket and shopping..

I think there is Ntg special in Hualien unless u want to visit Taroko gorge. Since you only spend 5 days in Taiwan I advise u better skip Hualien.
