Android boxes fuel content piracy

PETALING JAYA: Singapore’s proposal to ban media streaming boxes should be followed by Malaysia, say local industry players.

Dimsum chief marketing officer Lam Swee Kim (pic) said the move was to curb content piracy.

Budget is not really an issue for me, of course I am not looking for an expensive device here. I do have a benchmark for myself. tongue.gif
I will prefer apps compatibility at any time if given a choice.
Thanks for the advice. Looks like my heart still leans towards full Android OS. tongue.gif
OK, hoping for a better device next year, not looking for an upgrade this year.

I really like how neat Android TV OS is. I guess beggars can't be choosers. laugh.gif

Hi All, first time buying an Android Box. Have read the last 30 pages or so and seem like the most recommended is the Minex Neo U9 or Shield. Read couple of online reviews, youtube review and checked out the prices in Lazada.

Most probably will go more Minex since is 50% cheaper than a Shield. Will a Minex serve my primary needs below?

Primary Needs
1. Playback H.264/265 at 50/60FPS encoded video. One of the main reason i'm buying as my current SmartTV built in player can only play upto 30fps movies.

2. youtube and vimeo app

3. gaming for small kids. Will addon a gamepad, if so, does it makes sense to invest in Shield? Any gamepad recommendation that works well with minex?

4. Nice interface (ala netflix style) to browse my movie collection (via Wifi instead of direct USB). Can we set the Kodi to auto start upon boot? so that it behaves more like a kodi box instead of a andriod box.

Get the Minix Neo U9-H..
Yes

QUOTE(exshige @ Jan 30 2019, 02:29 PM)
thanks. kodi default launcher is a setting in minex that came together or need install 3rd party? i was googling about auto boot to kodi and came across needing to install apk for OnbootKodi app.

btw sideloading apk on minex doesn't require rooting right?
*
You can install a third-party app and set Kodi to auto launch upon boot up. This is Android not that other walled garden.. tongue.gif

QUOTE(exshige @ Jan 30 2019, 02:31 PM)
miss out this point.. but i reckon for the immediate 1-2 years .. the Android OS will be better as i get the same access level to apps as my phone. When Android TV caught up.. then is time to change hardware liao... biggrin.gif
*
Yes..

QUOTE(exshige @ Jan 30 2019, 03:23 PM)
i thought Kodi came preinstalled in U9..? if not mistakaen v17.1. but when i was watching those unboxing/setup youtube on minex, upon boot it allows choosing Minex default tiles launcher or the android phone-like launcher. no kodi launcher despite kodi already preinstalled.
*
All Minix from couple years back will ship with their own version/fork for Kodi. Minix is a diamond backer for the Kodi devs and as such got special privileges and access. Basically, they rewrote the Kodi software to perform better on their hw-fw combo. However, you are still free to install other forks and or the official Kodi apps. These will install and run independently of each other. I for one, have SPMC, Official Kodi Leia and XBMC for Minix.

Which one will be better, Android TV OS or stock Android OS? I'm thinking of Shield or other devices which are using Android TV OS in the future.
*
Android TV OS is better for the big screen.. Just the apps compatibility issue.. Else, that's how the TV experience should be. Hey, play your cards right and in the future, there just might be a good Android TV OS powered TV. Buy that and no need to get the Shield.. biggrin.gif

Despite having the most compatible, snappy, voice commands, and user-friendly remote and game controllers for Shield TV and Apple TV4, my gf will only grab the LG TV Magic remote. The intuitive mouse like pointing and wheel control makes her feel other remote controllers are complicated biggrin.gif

Well, I didn't mention Astro Go is illegal or will have issue. laugh.gif
Anyway, unfortunately the people out there will have this assumption - Android boxes = Illegal IPTVs. bangwall.gif

Another news for this recent hot topic.

Android boxes cheap and easy to navigate, say users

PETALING JAYA: Android boxes, which allow for online streaming from legal and illegal sites on the Internet, are popular among Malaysian households as the offerings are cheap and easy to use.

Also known as set-top box, these devices can stream the latest movies, documentaries and live TV channels, including news, to the TV for free or with a small subscription, legally or illegally.

So very true.. Some money really can't be saved. Similarly, I've had Netflix for donkey years and my SO uses it almost everyday. In all the years she's seen me tinkering with Android boxes and HTPCs, she's never once bothered to learn their usage. So just continue to keep out Netflix account. Granted Netflix's service has been superb.

While more cores wouldn't hurt (done right)..A good box ain't about how many cores.. Goes way beyond that. I've seen devices with the latest CPUs and GPUs still falter due to poor firmware and build quality.. So focus on the overall device performance instead of how many cores it has. Also, which Octacore box comes with an SD processor? Thats usually used for mobiles.. Typically it's Intel, RK or AMLogic.. hmm.gif

spent couple of hours yesterday with my new minix u9...

the navigation for most 3rd party apps is very difficult.. most of the time i dunno where is the highlighted for command and some apps can't even navigate at all like Astro On The Go using the default remote. With the A3 airmouse remote it makes it a bit easier but i have to constantly using the airmouse which is quite tiring on the hand... lol... the default youtube app interface is hard to use with the remote..

the responsiveness of the system on action command still got a bit lag compare to smartphone.. i thought a typical 8 core should already be overkill for menu UI tasks nowadays...

somehow i can't get speedtest.net app to work. i installed it, launched it, saw the first 2 screen of it saying that it want to know my location to determine server to ping, then i click next but then it shows a loading animation indefinitely...

I cannot get use of the airmouse too so I bought something like this: https://s.lazada.com.my/s.lBy6 Cheap and easy to use.

Speedtest app is working on my U1 though.
