dwRK
Excellent job on the V2.. Lord knows I would not have gone too detailed.. biggrin.gif . I do have one gripe with the recommendations though. Noticed the Xiaomi Mi Box 3 Enhanced was ranked same (Power house?) as the Nvidia Shield, while others such as the Q10 Pro and even the unreleased Minix Neo U9/U9-H ranked lower. Point is, while the Xiaomi Mi Box 3 Enhanced is a decent box, performance-wise, it does not outperform the Minix Neo U1.. Much less the unreleased Minix Neo U9/U9-H.. Heck the HiMedia Q10 Pro- which boasts 4K H.265/H.264/VP9 decoding with Dolby Vision & HDR10 high dynamic range standards, native SATA, HDMI 2.0a, verified 7.1 HD Audio pass-through and USB 3.0 (to mention a few advantages)... So in order to avoid "confusion" (cuz Antutu isn't everything biggrin.gif ), I suggest a modification. My 2 cents.

Seriously, thanks for such a brilliant start to the V2.. rclxms.gif rclxms.gif

Given how the bigger brother Android is ballooning out of control, I'm glad Google decided to place a tight leash on the Android TV OS. However, it isn't maturing at the pace it should be. Guess there isn't enough market share to make it worthwhile to most manufacturers and app developers. For now, it's alright.. Just expected more from it at this stage.

Google has this Android TV Launcher on play store... It won't show up using your normal android phone/box...i think you can force it to show but I lazy to try. I think it also won't push Android TV apps unless you spoof the box.

From apkmirror...

[attachmentid=8512121]
*
Even with spoofing, having the launcher apk alone will not an Android TV OS make.. Only a proper port can achieve that. As there are other system level apks required for a quasi-experience and apps installation.

I see.. Didn't try it myself either as current setup works fine. Besides, I'd rather opt for the full experience and get the Shield 2. As soon as I can convince myself to get a decent 4K TV. brows.gif

not sure the problem lies with the controller or the box. after connected with my vr's game controller, I can only set it to mouse setting, where I move the joy stick to hover the mouse cursor around the screen. the gaming setting (using joy stick as directional) has no effect at all  bangwall.gif

is this a firmware issue for minix? been having fun playing Dungeon Quest with my vr's controller on my phone, wish to play it on larger screen  laugh.gif

Have to get a more compatible controller.. Confirmed ones include PS3, Xiaomi's, G910 & the Xbox 360.

Android definitely is the champion.. Or rather Unix is.. IMO, IOS is solid and all but it's very hard for me (right now) to imagine it or any other mobile-oriented OS ever overtaking Android. Well, as long as Alphabet (Google) doesn't mess up in the future and keep pushing it's limits.

$830 per share.. sweat.gif

I was reading up on SoC...apparently the ones used in Q10/Q5 Pro has.... Dolby Vision!!!

Maybe that's why, coupled with their Imprex engine, PQ is better than the rest....
*
It definitely helps and HiMedia have shipped a decent firmware to tap into that. AFAIK, the Hisilicon Hi3798C V200 is the first global UHD chipset that supports Dolby Vision with HDR technology. The future will be quite interesting.. smile.gif

Yeah, I agree.. Android for productivity, still has a long way before it can threaten OS X, much less Windows.. and frankly, I don't think it can. Anyway, Nokia happened.. so who knows.. smile.gif

10bit video files = HDR movies?
If displayed on non HDR TV will it look worse than non 10bit files or would it look just the same?
*
No.... These are two completely different things. 10bit (aka Deep Color) is referring to color depth, the amount of distinct colors that can be displayed on screen. HDR refers to dynamic range: the ability to display or capture details in the darkest and lightest part of an image simultaneously. A really good TV should have both Deep Color and HDR.

Some methods/apks to force Netflix to play in HQ...please read the comments too smile.gif

http://www.cnx-software.com/2016/11/28/how...ne-level-1-drm/
*
Samsung Tab S2 (tablet in post) is certified by Netflix to run full HD.. Also note the following..

QUOTE
Although it might or might not breach Netflix TOS, please note that this has nothing to do with piracy at all, nor does it skip DRM, as it still requires both a Netflix HD subscription and a device supporting Widevine Level 1 DRM. Sadly that also means the trick will still not work on most cheap Android TV boxes that are limited to Level 3 security. It’s also quite possible Netflix eventually notices and changes the code to prevent this little hack. You can check Widevine DRM support with DRM Info app.

...and further down in the comments...

"Im remodded that apk to force HD in non-certified device L3. Try it."

"Tq for coorperation. Yes, its clean…After i get the apk look into its. I think the apk is disable DRM Detection Level and only supported only Cert-Device L1 then im thinking how to force it to HD in level 3…Actually im re-modded the apk :-

1) To always return Detection Widevine L1 even the device is L3. Means no false (0)..always true (1)
2) To always detect Device is HD"

"new latest netflix modded apk by me normal app not leanback. This version is more clear. force to play on UltraHD http://199.175.53.21/netflixlatest.hdonly8.apk"

"Not tested on any device with L1 level..Actually modded special for L3 coz L1 still can using original apk at Playstore and can get HD or UHD depending on device, hdcp level and TV."

"Seem to work 1080p on my widevine l3 s912"

"Does anybody have an APK for an L1 Device?"

"Try that one: http://minix.com.hk/downfile/Netflix_HD.apk"
I have not tried it...no interest in Netflix...
*
I noticed the last apk supposedly came from Minix's servers and I wondered why it would be working and they didn't publicize it. I mean, it's a strong selling point and a lot of Minix users out there would want Netflix in full HD/UHD. So just for kicks... Went ahead to install all three apks referenced on that page (Netflix_HD.apk, netflix-hd-remodded.apk & netflixlatest.hdonly8.apk) and none could even install on the Neo U1. No surprises there.

1. Netflix grants a master key to enable HD/UHD on their target devices.
2. Netflix provides a special apk that support HD/UHD, it's not the same app on Play Store and versions differ from device to device.
3. Netflix has an internal test server for device approval testing.
4. You could easily verify this by looking at the Shield TV box.
5. If enabling/skipping DRM alone would work, Netflix do not have to provide a test server to complete hundreds of tests before enabling HD/UHD, and manufacturers don't have to contact them at all to be certified.

Summarily: Without Netflix's blessing, there is absolutely very little to zero chance to get HD/UHD on an uncertified device. Not to worry, Long-term Netflix user here and gets full 1080p with DD via smart TV's app. No additional device needed.

Someone said was working on Jan 18...that was fast of Netflix patching the hacks & exploits...

Sorry to get hopes high for people.
*
Pay no heed to Netflix..They are a pain & that good at closing such loopholes... They also have teams scouring the internet for all these hacks/patches to their apks.. Figure how it bypasses their security and lock it down asap.. It's okay to get hopes up.. Nothing wrong with that. Netflix is great, some of us are still able to occasionally get into the USA content and it contains a lot of good content not available to the also Malaysian market. My home minister will almost never switch on the Android box, but can easily launch the Netflix TV app, choose and settle into a title..within seconds. Says the Android box is too complicated... Haha, don't blame er.

Can recommend one? I tried chrome, can play smoothly but the quality feel a bit different than native player.

Also there's this weird bug on this machine, if you disable google play app auto update, next time you open google play it will give you the terms and conditions screen like you're signing in first time and the settings all reset lol.
*
Been awhile since I've used it.. But try UC Browser.. It's good for videos.

Weird, usually those come up when the Play store updates itself.. Perhaps yours gets special updates.. brows.gif

Wow I did some digging, there were actually two apps on the machine, one was called "google play store", the other "play store". When I disable  "play store" and i try to launch google play store, it says incompatible version for device, uninstall updates blah blah(cause play store auto updates to latest version.) So I think maybe "play store" stops google play store from updating itself thereby causing the problem I was seeing. Wah is it safe to use this play store ah, luckily i created different account for the box.
*
Seems like you do get special updates... Yeah, for such devices, best to have a separate Google account for email & stuffs.. Safer that way. There should only be on "Google Play Store" installed on the device. This works in hand with another, "Google Play services".
Try to verify the legit Play Store and ditch the other if possible.

Good tip I did more digging, play store auto updates to the google tv version.

http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/google-play-store/

If you look there, my version is the [8] one. But even though i downloaded the [0] one to manually install after it installs successfully, app info is the [8] version. So I think the software replaces it with factory version(which is [0]) after everytime google play self updates.
*
Your device is Android 6 and should be running the regular Google Play Store and not the Play Store meant for Android TV.

QUOTE(Two5Kid @ Feb 27 2017, 04:22 PM)
Does this means that if I get an Android TV (ex: Sony), I don't have to buy a Kodi box at all? Besides Sony, which brand has Android TV built in?
*
Firstly... There's no such thing as a "Kodi Box".. Only boxes where Kodi was pre-installed and possibly pre-configured..

Android TV OS =/= Android OS.. The former is geared towards the bigger screen and the latter towards phones and tablets..but has been adapted for the big screen too. Buying an Android TV OS powered TV, if sufficient... Then no need for an additional media box, else.. Up to you to get one.

Check the app name within either the list of installed applications (stock launcher) or application manager.. It's got to be named Google Play Store. Cuz Google rebranded such and became Google Play... Then changed the name from "Android Market" to Google Play Store. Then others followed like;
*Google Play "Movies & TV"
*Google Play "Music"
*Google Play "Books", etc..

An update for my case. biggrin.gif

Complained to hotel and their IT and maintenance department were quick in solving. After few rounds of troubleshooting and using my cable to try, I also brought my box to my colleague's room, her TV has no issue. So, confirmed it is my own TV issue. At first I thought I will require to change room, who knows the staff were so friendly and helped me to change my TV. Detached the old from one bracket and put in a new one. biggrin.gif

Internet connection was decent enough to stream my IPTV and Icdrama 720p content. I haven't tried Full HD Quasar yet. I'm so contented. rclxms.gif

Finally end of my drama. Luckily my cable is good. laugh.gif
*
Nice of the hotel to go to such extents to please their customers.. Now return the favor and on behalf of the other hoteliers... Do NOT run the Quasar addon or such p2p based connections on a hotel network.. As doing so, will most likely grind the network to a halt for other users.. Regular streaming is okay.. Let's play nice, ya... icon_rolleyes.gif
