they need cut the HDD pricing, SSD is like only 4X pricier. I already regret buying a 2TB Hdd recently. I should have remove all my HDD from my old computer make all of them for cold storage offline archiving, while using SSD to be OS/app drive.

Hi, I just got my WD black 2TB from RMA. After I'm using it I heard random grinding sound. Then when I want to shut down my PC the I heard that grinding sound again and it happened on regular basis. Is that normal or should I RMA it again?

I have checked via crystaldisk and checkdisk and there is no problems. Currently testing using WD lifeguard diagnostics.

it's a high speed hdd so some grinding noise is expected, that's because of the actuator moving at very high speed.

New HDD already pretty quite. I had some old Caviar black HDD which sold off, the high pitch motor noise would drive people insane lol.

there's no best hdd brands.

Most likely limited to Seagate IronWolf series? the models are listed on website.

For data backup, Windows 10 provide some protections like File History, which existed since W7 era, System Restore and Software RAID(within Disk Management), Storage Space, ect...
But some of these require multiple drives.

For Cloud you can use google cloud.

TL;DR, local backup are much faster and third party data recovery, unless your time is not critical.

only Iron wolf series.

If you are afraid of your data is loss due to HDD failure, buy another HDD as hard backup. Either run as raid 1 or just mirror copy it. 2 HDDs is much safer than trying to buy Data recovery insurance.

when comes to data recovery it also cover accident like HD drop and etc.But seldom people move around a NAS IronWolf.
If I look at it , it give even more warranty on data.
Lets say the fifth year , then I buy the data recovery , it means anything happen I can still recover the data at the 6th and 7th year.
Isn't it useful ?
3rd party recovery cost a lot and the seagate is free.

Offline back up much safer.
I remember a forum member on raid NAS drive suddenly lightning strike both HDD data gone . sad.gif
I was hoping for price drop on Cloud backup with a cheaper price but almost few years , it's still the same.Google drive 1TB still $9.99 covert yearly is >RM500
Too expensive.Never have a price drop.I can't find a cheap cloud storage.

The best is to have 3 backup now adays. You don't know what happen if using NAS or something like a sudden flash flood , lightning strikeAll gone.
NAS + Offline + Cloud.Best is NAS link to cloud.

Forgot to ask other questions
1. Those cheaper external hard disk like segate 2TB 2.5 portable , all are solder USB 3.0.How do you guys actually manage to recover the data ?
2. Why does those 2TB 2.5 portable price so much cheaper compare to on 2TB sata. RM 259 portable vs RM 370 for 2TB ?
3. Do you guys buy HDD from online store like laz or shopeee ? Which shop do a the best hard disk packing with extra bubble wrap or better QC ?

It depend on your usage, if it ain't broken, don't fix.
typical usage don't really kill your hdd, the OS and the hdd controller will handle it nicely,
Your hdd only do works when instructed, eg read caching, and write cache flushing, the caching is designed to increase performance and reduce strain in hdd, afaik.

I think you're just paranoid sweat.gif

Maybe , but the load/unload cycle is around 3k or 4-5 times more than 1tb blue when count on time usage hours.
As for budget HDD which one will be better seagate or WD ? Seagate 2TB = 7200rpm while WD 2TB = 5400rpm.

Look for warranty first, you can still at least back it up and rma when the hdd shat itself, reuse/or offload it to marketplace.
5400rpm drive is a bit slow in terms of access time, but if for backup or storage use it's not really important.

Don't you have other choice like Toshiba/Hitachi?

My caviar black 1tb bought on 2006 still working very fine but wd green 1tb dead after 1 year and half. My maxtor 80gb bought on 2003 still working fine. Put this maxtor in office PC to replace corrupted Hitachi HD and its working great. The downside is I can't do windows 10 update because not enough space lol. This maxtor brand is really good.
