Malaysia fighter aircraft buy are more political than SG. The only way to keep them cheap and have longer service life is to have more plane. TUDM do not want ruskies as the plane is cheap but the maintenace doctrine is expansive. They are more like sngapore cars 10yrs and you scrap it. Weatern plane are more robust and easy to maintain.

And yes Sg got airspace constrain. Cheaper and political safe. All Sg fighter have to make high g turn after take off. Over shot Orang Johore marah.

i guess even the indians learned it the hard way..

lol... high G is part of life, as long dont encroach into msian airspace that have not been permitted, no problem la... orang johor can suck thumb if putrajaya allows.. org johor also kawan sama singkie la

even though imma fan of typhoon, for malaysia scenario, imma full support for super hornet+hornet combined..can make a mix of 2nd hand hornet + new super-hornet

shrink the variety to Su-30MKM/SH-H/Hawk more easier for logistic, maintenance, support & training management
*
True so if in the future TUDM should concentrate of having 2 MKM squadron (1 gong kedah and 1 in labuan) and 2 super bug ( 1 in butterworth and 1 in east malaysia) in this way they will save on fuel and logistic. SG went for F15 due to engine commonality. Safe on logistic but as Sg the price is more on training airspace. Training and station personnel in france, australia and USA is more expensive than MY having that number of plane.

Queensland training area for SAF set to be smaller

user posted image

Australia is planning to substantially reduce the size of proposed training areas for Singaporean troops in Queensland provided for under a multibillion-dollar deal reached between the two countries last year.

Australia is now including additional infrastructure in lieu of the area. The revised plan follows an outcry from farmers who have refused to sell hundreds of thousands of hectares of farmland to make way for the expansion of the training areas at Shoalwater Bay base, near the city of Rockhampton, and a field training area at Townsville, a city further north.

Despite initially insisting the expansion was required to meet the military's training needs, a revised Australian masterplan says defence officials have now assessed that "a smaller expansion of Shoalwater Bay Training Area and Townsville Field Training Area is achievable".

The government has said it will continue to try to buy land from farmers - but The Sunday Times has been told few are expected to sell.

As much as 300,000ha of land - an area about four times the size of Singapore - was involved in the original acquisition plan.

According to the revised master- plan, published on the Australian Defence Department's website on Feb 23, the government believes it can achieve its training requirements with smaller bases. A final layout of the training areas will be decided later this year.

"Defence has identified a number of measures to achieve the training outcomes for the ADF (Australian Defence Force) and the SAF (Singapore Armed Forces) within this smaller expansion," the plan says. "These measures seek to maximise the use of the existing training areas through additional engineering works, revised scheduling, and simulated training activities to further limit the need for expansion."

The training areas will be used by the SAF under a A$2.25 billion (S$2.4 billion), 25-year deal between the two nations. By 2021, up to 14,000 SAF personnel will train for 18 weeks a year, compared with about 6,600 troops who currently train for six weeks.

The office of Defence Minister Marise Payne said the changes would not affect plans to allow for the training of increasing numbers of SAF troops to start later this year.

"This will not affect the timetable (under the Singapore training deal)," a spokesman for the minister said. "A gradual increase in numbers will start later this year."

The government's final decision on the training areas will depend on the number of farmers who sell, as well as a study of the social and economic impact on the region. The study, conducted by accounting firm KPMG, is close to being finalised and will include public submissions which closed last Monday.

The spokesman for Ms Payne said officials were continuing to meet farmers about purchasing land near the two training sites, but would not comment on how many were expected to sell.

"We are only looking to work with willing sellers," he said.

Mr Ian Conrad, a Queensland lawyer representing several farmers, said: "Nobody has expressed negativity towards the fact that we're having more training for Singaporean troops.

"It is more that they (the federal government) were looking at taking good-quality land and going about it in a ham-fisted way."

Mr Conrad also said he expected that the "vast majority" of the 60 or so affected farmers would not sell their land.

Aside from seeking to buy land from farmers, the Defence Department stated in the plan that it is also considering other options, such as providing additional training areas further inland.

Guess the newbies need the news: we can't buy Russian aircraft because of MH017, we can't buy American aircraft because of 1MDB and anyway they won't let us have more than their pet Singkie feels appropriate, and TUDM wants 2 engine fighter so Gripen is out.

EVERYTHING is political, few countries are truly "cash and carry" as someone here said, and we are already buying from them - Africa, France, China

Don't need fighter jets lah...  biggrin.gif

So expensive...  sad.gif

Might as well invest in hacking and propaganda.  sad.gif

Shutting down our electricity by one hacker can do more damage to SG than the whole of ATM...  sad.gif

no lah

i dun think SG is stupid enough to put all their power supply management under one sole network

hold? no.. MAGTF is always together.. whether is it MEU/MEB/MEF

the battalion is only the ground element... its always a complete MAGTF, which is the MEU.. they dont send in grunts without aviation/naval cover...

Thats not what I meant
A battalion MAGTF is just 3 companies of men, 6 fighters, 4 tanks, some helis and a battery of guns
Although they *can* be first responders to any situation, in practice they always operate as at least a brigade size MEB, which will require reinforcement from the various Marine bases

QUOTE
you left out the aviation side of the marine's MEB... you're comparing the land component only.. that's why to you the marine is lighter
*
Don't be confused by the aviation side just because USMC MAGTFs seem to assign their jets at a pretty low level. US Army units will have the same level of support from USAF or USN air also.

USMC is lighter because they are designed for shorter combat duration, have smaller logistics supply chain and have a lot less armour assets - a whole Marine Division has less tanks than a US armour brigade.

ermm, dont think its the same with sg, behind enemy lines yes but it looks as though 10para operates in battalion sized units... for sg, since it is mostly made up of nsmen, the max is usually a company and most common a section/squad level operations while under a combined arms unit (eg. commando company, separated in sections/squads distributed across a combined arms brigade) not 1 battalion all commandos..

*
SAF CDO is more in line with 10th para pathfinder platoons and reconnaissance platoons in light infantry regiments

Yes. But that duration is relatively short
That is part of why they can deploy faster than Army - less tail to carry
They are meant to hold while waiting for the rest of the Marine MEF, 101st/82nd/10th division and then the rest of the US Army to pile in
No, smallest MAGTF is Battalion Landing Teams - even have proposal to deploy Company Landing Teams... BLT meaning 3 infantry companies + lots and lots of add-ons
Don't look at divisions, divisions always have lots of attached units - look at brigade level, and compare heavy ground assets of a USMC Brigade and a US Army armour brigade.

A fully-equipped USMC MEB is assigned 1 company of tanks, 1 battalion of AAVs and 3 batteries of 155mm towed howitzers. A US Army armour brigade is assigned 6 companies of tanks, 6 companies of IFVs and 3 batteries of 155mm SPHs. That's why a USMC unit is considered lighter than US Army.
actually do the Mig29s still have useful flying hours left?

supposedly Typhoon engine less maintenance than Rafale?
*
only 10 MIG left and of course it is safe to fly it if not they wont fly
but right now mostly for interception duties and selected exercises only
even for patrol sorties are very rare

if we can have American aircraft, Boeing, Lockheed, Bell wont be making an appearance in LIMA so does robonoexport and the gang.

Plus Boeing is bringing a quit large envoy for LIMA this year and most of them is now in KL for the MRCA
- sound like there is a decision soon enough
+ plus the EDA transfer of the SPH is also from US if you are forgotten

Hornets are made for carrier landing. Structure wise its much more stronger than f16.So normal air force that use hornet can use for much longer time. Look at Iranian f14. The problem with the f18c/d avionics upgrade will be expansive as not many user. The engine and missile are easy to purchase.
