Appartamento does not have PID and is terribly expensive for what it offers, among Italian machines. For example, Quickmill Rubino or Lelit Mara X are cheaper HX machines. I was contemplating the Quickmill Sunny, which is priced closed to the Appartamento. It has a thermoblock for brewing, a 1.5L boiler for steam, and has pressure profiling. It comes with a barista kit with a bottomless portafilter. It has quick heat up time since it is not a E61.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e0kQ5WqjcU8
Mainly to choose is E61 vs normal one and HX vs boiler or dual boiler..

hey guys, I've been using Nespresso pods for about 2 years now and thinking its time to switch to espresso machine...can't decide between getting one of those cheaper ones on Shopee/Lazada or a second hand Delonghini or Murphy Richards machines...can anyone help advice? Does the branded machines like Delonghini or Murphy Richards last? Oh ya, my budget is around RM300 for the machine.

I'm in the same boat. I've been a nespresso pod user for about 3+ years now and about a 2 months ago, I've decided to get an espresso machine to compliment my coffee addition setup. Needless to say it was the best thing ever. There are days where u just want a quick coffee fix and thats where the pods come in and nespresso if u really want to pull those barista/cafe mouthfeel goodness. So, I got myself a Milesto EM19M2 for about 1K used.. It's a China brand but don't let that put u off.. It has so far done wonders I can froth and pull a shot at the same time because of the double boiler. It's an entry unit so don't expect it to perform like your Lelit, Marazocca, ECM, Rocket.. etc.. etc.. but if you're just looking to get into espresso machine this would probably be it.

I know a lot of people are pro delonghi and the likes, where it's really no hassle and easy push of a button like the nespresso. If you're looking for that kind of simplicity no hassle then yes I believe those will get you what u need. I originally had a budget of about RM700 but end up spending way more to also get a good grinder. I didn't want a machine that would 'pull' the same taste/feel like a nespresso machiane would. If you can, go above and get a good machine that will last u.

FYI, even with nespresso pods i still crave the cafe style coffee.. but every since getting the Milesto, I've stopped altogether. End up just buying the whole beans from the cafes i used to frequent and do it myself. tongue.gif..

So you recommend quickmill sunny over appartamento.

Sorry that I just noticed your reply since it is not tagged to my initial post

Any recommended place to get these coffee machines in retail stores so I can go see it physically instead? Preferably in Klang valley

Yes, in fact, at that kind of price point, you probably would want a double boiler with better temp stability and no need to do temp surfing. Italian options:
- Breville BDB - "consumer" grade. dual 750ml SS boilers
- Lelit Elizabeth - 600ml SS steam boiler, 300ml brass brew boiler
- Rancilio Silvia Pro X - can't remember exact specs, but I think 1L SS steam boiler
- Quickmill Sunny - not exact dual boiler because usess thermoblock for brew but 1.5L SS steam boiler

But at that kind of price point, with Chinese options, you can get rotary pump.
- Gemilai 3131A - 2L SS steam boiler, rotary pump

I was keen on the Chinese machine too but i am worried about reliability and support, plus it is quite big.

So far, my WPM 210 is still soldiering on. I had replaced its steam pump 3 times because of leakage over 4 years of use.

we grew up with over roasted with margarine cheap liberica or cheap arabica beans... our palate is used to kedai kopi kaw kaw with condensed milk... and so we have this expectation and bias...

good arabica beans can have varied smells and tastes... acidity or sourness is often one of it... a good coffee may be sour but should be well balanced... if overly sour means it wasn't brew properly... and of course you can have some coffee without much acidity/sourness... and roasting can adjust the flavor profile of the beans...

Guys. I used to experience Delonghi entry level EC310 more than decades. I asked the dealer that my model already obsolete and my steam wand gasket seems like leakage the water or steam during extract the coffee. I love delonghi but my wallet not friendly now. I am looking for Gemilai but I read through many users on Facebook that their gemilai coffee machine so many cases regarding water leakage. Even though the Shoppe got selling the gasket but I don't know the Brand is it reliable or not. And i also struggling in between Gemilai CRM3018 vs Gaggia Classic pro. Of course both of them are different segment. One is china made pro summer range and another is entry 'premium' level.

PS. I am using quite long time and i wish to invest a new machine which is more advance from now. But I am doubt gemilai is worthy?

Hi Sifus,

I was recently given a simple espresso setup to start my journey - previously fell into nespresso trap. I have a donlim KF-6001 and a Groenenberg Coffee Grinder Manual and i have been tweaking and dialing in new beans (pretty slowly).

From what i read through the forum, there isn't any good electric burr grinder below 1k and we should use hand grinder. If that's the case, what would be the recommendation?

I was thinking the budget for about 500, but i know quite a lot of recommendation has been for 1Zpresso that may cost more - is it worth the extra money for the K-pro/plus series in the longer term?

Currently doing 1 cup a day, and occasionally two.

Good Day Everyone,

I've been using Moka Pot and pour over for quite a number of year now and would love to explore using espresso machine.

Due to aesthetical purposes (wife requirement), we've decided to get the below:-

1) Delonghi EC685
2) This Unbranded Coffee Grinder --> seems good enough to do the job
3) 51MM Bottomless Portafilter
4) Scale??
5) and other chapalang accessories such as filter holder, tamper and etc

It is too much for a newbie? Would love to hear more suggestions from Sifus here.

Thanks.

The machine usually comes with all the required accessories out of the box. You just need to buy the grinder and maybe a milk pitcher. And the beans, of course.

You equipment setup will depend on your budget. What's your budget?
