If you get serious into roasting later on, you will outgrow this machine very quickly. You don't really get to train your skills without the ability to read bean temps and adjust airflow/roation to build a profile.
There's alot of other limitations to go through too but again that's comparing to a >10k machine which is unfair

If you're looking for a machine just to learn the fundamentals of coffee roasting, z popcorn popper machine is good enough. I picked one up for RM60 when first started.
If you don't mind covering postage or buy me a cup of coffee when you're around, I can passover the machine to you for no cost. I've even added a dimmer mod to allow some small temp control  smile.gif

You can look into a Hottop or Huky 500 if you want something closer to commercial machines

U r staying in penang right? Can visit u to see how u roast ur bean? Haha. Hope that wont get poison

Thanks for the help on the advice. Originally the Shower screen comes from Portugal. But i get it at taobao since the fellow had stock on hand (Much faster) but i did order another one for my silvia and that comes from portugal itself. It takes 2 week to arrives. It should be delivered to me last week but you know, poslaju / pos express been post poslaju / pos express....Delay as always.

Nice! Was just looking for the same thing as well as the IMS basket too.
Got a link? I was worried about getting imitation or wrong version for the Oscar

Here you go.

IMS shower screen for Oscar

QUOTE(stfsoelyn @ May 14 2016, 12:20 PM)
You can get Loctite NSF H1 food grade silicone grease from RS malaysia, but it costs a bomb: RM60 for 85 grams!  Or you can try Orelube from Boelube Malaysia, RM140 for 410 grams. Online purchase from Superlube also works, i think abt USD30 for 400 gms. These are all 2014 prices, that's when I hunted around for grease. Just make sure there are least amount of unnecessary additives, like PTFE, as possible.
Forgot to mention, cheaper alternative is to go to most dive shops, and look for silicone grease for lubricating O-rings and dive regulators.
*
Thanks for the help. Just send email to Boelube, Hopefully i can get reply from them on the dealing method. It is hard to find a dive shop around my place and ordering from US is expensive especially the freight cost half of its item price or least quater of its price.

Alright guys. Here are the result of testing both shower screen on my Oscar.

Oscar Original Screen - Water distribution it tends to get unpredicted distribution but mostly end up not really on the center and the water flow stream is uneven.

IMS shower screen - Water distribution all been control at the centre and steady of the flow water drop better abit then the original screen.

Verdict: Taste the coffee still same not much had change but i'm getting even flow of the coffee coming out of the portafilter through the spout consistent with level of the coffee puck check before brewing (original sometimes you get one side first then follow another side). The shower screen now are easily to clean and when i remove the shower screen to check. There is literally little or no coffee residue stuck on the brass plate above the shower screen.

Overall the impact is minimal but not a necessary a MUST have mod to have for the oscar unless your shower screen is leaking or broken.

Much thanks for the informed feedback. Actually my interest is very simply to get freshly roasted coffee on a convenient basis at a reasonable cost. To put things in perspective, my current coffee kit is a Philips Saeco Poemia (pressurised most of the time), a Feima-equivalent 600N grinder and other assorted brewing paraphernalia (Aeropress, V60). While of course I can get fresh beans from some local roasters at RM35-ish for 250gm, my family consumes about 1.2kg a month, which would make a financial dent. As such I usually get from Mister Coffee (usually very fresh but without a roasted-on date), or LeBistro (super fresh, but occasionally not consistent delivery times, and only one blend) both at under RM50 per 500gm. However for Mister Coffee I have to get 1kg in one go so by the time it gets towards the end, it is over three weeks and not great anymore. I was thinking if I could get raw beans for under RM80 a kg & invest in a roaster costing less than RM2k, it would still be viable.

just changed the group head screw to flathead, bought from taobao

should i change the diffuser too?

Is you shower screen broken or leaking already ? I just change my shower screen.
check the verdict of the shower screen on my post on top. What i can say is that constant tamp force (Depend on your grind dail and not necessary need to temp 30lbs) and the level of flatness of the tamping comes first then any other thing. If your tamping uneven when there is no used of changing the shower screen as the water will travel less resistance path to flow out of the portafilter.

Your using Oscar ?

I thought Oscar screw head is flat

I totally understand where you're coming from. In fact my cross over point was when my friend purchased 200g of beans for RM75 and that made me think it might be worth to figure out how to roast on my own

Maybe I help to break down some pro/con of a couple of popular roasting machines for you too choose

Popcorn popper
Pro: Cheap, small
Con: Small batch (100g), no bean probe, need manual agitation in the beginning, no temp control, no chaff collection and smoke redirection, inconsistency

GeneCafe
Pro: Affordable, chaff collection, variable temps, lots of info outside, 250g batches
Con: Inconsistent on Natural/Sumatran beans, still smoky, no bean probe for profiling, manual cooling, no trier

Hottop
Pro: 500g batches, moddable to add bean probe, adjustable temps, chaff collector, cooling tray, drum roaster
Con: Expensive, no trier

Not yet, Everything still stock for now except for shower screen. I haven't start my mod on the steam want yet as im still waiting for the lube vendor to provide me some response. Once i finish my wand then i might want to go for OPV and flow restrictors but problem with OPV is that you need to spend more money to get the gauge else you wont know how much is your pressure bar.

Just some general term if anyone looking for OPV mod and what to order.

"boiler predisposed" or "boiler not predisposed"

The only way to tell is to take the top cover off your Oscar. It is a quick task and involves removing 6 screws.

If you look at the kits, the 'boiler predisposed' kit has a vacuum breaker that screws directly into the boiler using an available fitting. Older boilers lacked this installation point, so the vacuum breaker had to be installed using a t-connector.
I will leave the electronics upgrade mod part alone for future plan as i also plan to PID my Oscar.
