Based on your wonderful video I have once again endeavoured to depressurize my Poemia. Bringing down the grind size to visually similar to your video, I have managed to *finally* pull a shot taking longer than 20 sec (about 22 sec) to get 45 ml with a decent *REAL* crema!!! Woo hoo!

HOWEVER ..... I have to admit... don't like the taste!! It tastes strong (expected), bitter (a disappointment) and muddy (a nasty surprise).

I tried increasing the grind size today and compensating by increasing the coffee to 16gm; now the extraction took only 13 sec, crema was low (still there though) and the muddiness was much less... still more bitter than the pressurized shot.

Any pointers?

The PID temperature controller experiment has been put on hold as the unit I got is not according to spec (no alarm function) so I'm returning it. Will share once a decent unit is received.

Hi,

Good to hear that you manage to pull a shot longer than 20 sec. If its muddy and bitter could be that your grinder is the culprit where it grinds too fine (muddiness) for some grinds on that dose.

What kinda beans are you using? Dark roast or medium roast beans?

sickelmo

Wow Genecafe CBR-101, new and not used before. Thats a steal. Too bad out of my budget.

I estimate the roast to be a dark (maybe medium-dark)....

I think I will try using the Hario Skerton to get a more consistent grind this weekend and try again.... weekday mornings are way too busy to mess around with a manual. In the meantime I have repressurised blush.gif but trying something else; noticed the spring is really really soft. When I googled for Poemia replacement springs, noticed the design is quite different... the replacement springs look thicker. This morning I placed a small plastic disk beneath the spring to add compression force, and the shot came out pretty good! Extraction time was about 20 sec (compared to my usual 15 sec) and tasted nice... sweet & lots of flavour (though still not as full-bodied as unpressurised).

More experimentation this weekend!!

Philips Saeco HD8323 Poemia at Harvey Normans for RM559.

You should also check out other home appliance shops such as Best Denki, AEON Jusco, etc.

One more thing: what grinder do you intend to use? I'm a Poemia user (and also classify myself as a coffee beginner) and I must admit the grinder seems to be a far more important component in your coffee kit. For example, I am still battling to get a consistent decent cup from the machine when depressurized. When pressurized I can also taste the difference between the grind that coming from my Feima/equivalent 600N and the Hario Skerton hand grinder.

Any other reviews on this product? I am not sure about the technical spec, and the brand itself.
if not mistaken, the brand is from Taiwan? LOL not really a coffee-centric nation, but maybe they make good espreso machines?

actually im using gaggia evo and the classic's portafilter fits it haha, any 3rd party or ori from gaggia also ok. btw I saw one seller from amazon carries it for about USD 52 so it would be around RM250 if convert to MYR, need to find cheaper alternatives in Malaysia first then only decide want to buy from Amazon or not biggrin.gif

Grinder? haven't a clue! I intend to buy the ground coffees, so no need to grind, hehe.
And you are just being humble; I know your comprehension in coffee is quite good!

Any particular reason? i mean, is it a reliability issue, or the coffee is horrible?
