If you opt for KG89 for your grinder, do look up on youtube on how to mod it to grind a bit finer, this was my first grinder into coffee world. Still has it. But do consider small grinder like this aren't made for a lot of cups in small period of time.

Btw guys, what kind of water do you use for machine? Tap? RO? Filtered? I heard that water in Malaysia is not that hard. I do backflush once a week but how often do we need to descale if for example we use tap water?

I just use filter water with 2 core, one is carbon filter and second is ceramic. As for backflush, I do it every time when done brewing coffee. That’s to flush out all coffee residue from the brew head and screen.

If you want to go nuts on water, look for rpavlis water recipe. It’s mixing distilled water with potassium bicarbonate. Some formula add in epsom salt. I didn’t try it as I don’t want every morning coffee brewing become science experiment. Already done a lot of measurement and control on weight and pressure. Imagine now u need to control the water recipe too.

Almost never do any descaling. Like on the Rocket R58 we're using at the shop, it is even not advised to use descaler at all because the water paths are going through not just the boiler but also other smaller pipes along the way from source to brew head and can leave behind residue/clog at the corners. For descaling those, we have to dismantle the boiler and soak it alone in a chemical bath

Backflushing on the other hand is almost a daily routine

Water in Penang at least for us is about 50ppm before filter and 40ppm aftrerwards. It's not so much the minerals that we are afraid of (hard water) but Malaysians i think we are more worried about the rust/chlorine/dirt/stones in the water. So filter water for the machine please but definitely not RO. Zero minerals make very bad tasting coffee biggrin.gif

I'm on RO water for months way back when I started brewing coffee. Change to filtered water and the taste is really significant! I thought my amateur tongue wouldn't taste the different... biggrin.gif

I did descaling with my first machine, following the instruction manual while not considering the water hardness (newbie). Luckily got a friend who work at starbuck told me about the water hardness. Never did a descaling round after that.

Backflush everyday? If let say 1-2 cups / day, is it okay for once a week backflushing?

I forgot to add that the daily backflushing is just using water with the blind filter unless very big party that day biggrin.gif
Once a week is with the powder solution (caffetto, cafizza etc)

I only use Urnex Cafiza once a month as I'm using IMS Nanotech screen. Not much coffee oil stuck at the back of the screen. Before that using stock screen, I can see a layer of coffee oil after a week. That's daily water back flushing after 2-3 cups per day.

Am using the Puly Caff powder (3-5gm) once a week to backflush and clean group head, and daily after each shot just water backflush. Both on blind filter that's attached to the unused single spout portafilter.

I’m using naked portafilter with Gemilai CRM 3605. U can’t lock it to 90 degree straight but still work. I got it for rm 100 and use IMS basket.

Hey coffee lovers. So in my search for new grinder, I have shortlisted either 1xBaratza Encore RM760 or (1xeoleo 600n & 1zpresso jx combo ~RM850). Does this sound reasonable? Ohh I kind of need to buy machine grinder, cause will share with my dad. I don't want him to waste energy manual grinding. But I also don't want to compromised that much on grind consistency for my coffee (dad not much bother with this issue).

I mostly brewed on kalita & aeropress. My dad use french press.

I'm using Baratza Encore for filter coffee. It's pretty ok as long as you're not into espresso.

Do take note though, the initial grind would have quite a bit of retention. Cleaning is also a bit of a pain.

Never tried other machine grinder, so can't comment much. Otherwise I'm pretty happy with what I have right now.

Hi, got it from Shopee seller around RM 999. Taobao is cheaper but I don't want to deal with custom just in case. Taobao free grinder also seems to be a proper coffee grinder compare to local seller. If you don't want to do the warm water reservoir hack, you can look for CRM 3007D model. It's using 500ml stainless steel boiler so technically had more stable brew temp and more powerful steam.

Thank you. After a lot of reading here & on reddit, I end up ordering the 600n & 1zpresso jx. They said in term of grind quality, jx are much better than encore, and the 600n is good enough for my dad(also when I'm super lazy or have cheap beans).

Plus I ask PPPcoffee, they said Encore might be back in stock early June, but they can't promise it. There are quite a few post on reddit mentioning issue when it come to grinding light roast bean with the encore. can you confirm this? Most of the bean I bought is light roast. I dunno, I hope i make a correct decision lol

What was the specific issue on grinding light roast? Static build up?

It's not static build up. Plus i think static is a non issue for me. I just follow this genius: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0Dh1W40ILY

If I'm not mistaken some were saying there were lot of fines when grinding light roast when compare to jx. But I can't remember where I read it. Now that I think of it, all grinder will have some fine when grinding light roast right? I dunno

I think the fines is inevitable.

If you're particular on this, there's coffee sifter to counter this problem.
