QUOTE(lowkl @ Oct 21 2016, 09:59 AM)
Just got a Mignon yesterday; must say it's an experience.

Haven't got a funnel set up for my pf yet, so every dose ends up a messy affair.

The clumpiness is truly legendary for the beans I'm using, although they fall apart at the slightest touch.

Also, after 10 to 20 sec after stopping suddenly a clump sometimes falls out onto the countertop!

From this behaviour, I think there is a high buildup of static.... really need to research how to reduce/manage this.

Not used to this type of hopper, as I usually like to pre-weigh the beans. This doesn't work,as it really needs a minimum quantity for smooth feed to the burrs. Looking at some mods eg replacing the hopper with a straight tube.

I notice people are trying to compare grinder settings...ummm... not sure but I have a strong feeling the micrometric dial is not calibrated, ie my #4 is not identical to your #4.

But putting all the above peculiarities aside, I must say it has amazing consistency compared to what I was used to. Just pulled 3 shots all exactly 25 sec! Like a precision watch.....
*
That what i trying to mention earlier post about the messy grind, a fair reminder those who new to this grinder with no funnel set up be ready to clean the counter top..... rclxms.gif

Also, Try not to touch the portafilter metal side when the grinding is in process. You might not wanting get those static love given by mignon. i had been spark 3 times before i start to learning about the static love for mignon is real laugh.gif

Regarding on the setting it is vary from bean used to bean age..... setting might change over time but i only can share with most of ppl here my common setting are.... i do small micro adjustment from time to time and i get constant hit of achieve the taste as per bean profile mention by the bean roaster.

Always knock or rock your grinder after the grind, i always do that even for my breville too.... unless your using sette.

This I cannot get, my first shot is almost always shorter (~25 seconds) but every shot after that is consistent (~28 seconds).

I do like the grinder overall, but I too wish that I don't have to load too much into the hopper.

Let me try it out a few days in a row to see if I also have the same pattern as you. Possibly yes because first shot of the day may have higher retention due to static; after which the amount would stabilise.

I was checking out some mods for the Mignon, and there seems to be a few that replaces the hopper with a simple tube. Benefits would be direct feed into the burrs, so I can load exactly the amount I need and I can go back to pre-weighing the beans.

I can then also try dropping a drop or two of water per shot to substantially reduce the static....

That's very likely the reason, I'm sure there are some leftover beans in the grinder or chute, 12-hour old beans exposed to the air that's causing my first shot to always be a bit less optimal compared to the next shots.

Not a huge deal for me in the bigger scheme of things since I drown my espresso with milk anyway biggrin.gif

Didn't know there's a coffee thread in LYN!

Anyway, any idea how much would a 2nd hand Baratza Preciso be worth nowadays?

Hi all Sifus,
Planning to get an aeropress and manual hand grinder as a start in getting into coffee brewing. However, im stuck whether i should get a manual milk frother or an electric frother for milk based coffee?
Bte, i love coffee both by itself and milk based.

Hi Liquor;

If you have a French press, it will function exactly as the "manual" milk frother.

I find the French press/ plunger type better (easier & more stable froth) than the battery operated wand type. However it seems to require milk for 2 cups or more. I guess if you are only preparing for one cup it is only practical to use the wand type.

These days I must say I never have the time to steam or froth...it's nuke for 1 minute, pour into the coffee and off to work!

blink.gif actually what kind of dense froth you are looking at? I think it's personal choice, as to me the frothier from french press look alike it too dense for me but okay for cappuccino look alike. laugh.gif

Btw, its shake only warm, so you can use the plunger( french press lookalike ) only microwave
just my 2 cents

The BES870 is a pretty decent combo machine, with very positive feedback from owners and reviews. In fact, quite a few on this forum own one.

I guess the question would be: what makes you want to upgrade? And your budget?

Owning one, I'm also wondering what's the reason to upgrade....owning this machine for 6 months, I feel like I'm still learning something new every single day.

Oh yes, the bes870 is a good aio. I'm just itchy la considering an upgrade. My only gripe is the steam is not very powerful. A temperature control would be a great addition too.

Slow steam is good as it help to control the milk rolling since your using single hole tip even most of us doesn't go all full steam when milk frothing cos if the milk heat up too fast then you had less chances of getting a good micro foam for the art. BES870 temp control no good ? hmm.gif
