...IMHO not much point in flying business for short haul trips.
*
I used to think that way as well but the overall experience sometimes matters a lot and can make a huge difference in setting the tone of the entire trip. As flying becomes more and more accessible unfortunately also increases the chances of flying with passengers who bring 1000 carry on bags occupying all the overhead bin space, push and shove, rude, unhygienic, keep walking down the aisle to "stretch legs", clogged toilets... basic respect and awareness of other human beings are at an all time low. And that's just the in-flight experience.

On ground, not having to deal with people who love to 'shove' forward/lack basic respect of personal space (during check in, immigration if have priority lane) has value. Having your bags come out first has value. Being treated with basic respect from airport/immigration staff has value. Of course, having lounge access has incredible value too depending on how you fly.

I took such a trip recently (all less than 3 hour flight segments) and was surprised at how enjoyable and stress-free the whole experience was - very different from the stress I usually expect that dampens my mood. Give it a chance, it feels especially good when its an low mileage award/"free" (mine was 35k for the entire thing).

you can depart from kul and usually the miles required stays the same.

if there is a will, there is a way.

I am puzzled...why are you booking mostly one way sectors?....
*
sin to hkg on budget is cheap and I have booked it.

similarly I can get to akl through AA as I am due to be in KL for 2 days before the trip for family commitment. Also the trip has maximized the 5 stopovers.

I am more concern with how soon we need to complete to "trip" as my plan spread over 10 months

The miles needed are the same whether from spore or msia...and you can start your journey from the 4 airports sq/mi flies from, ie KUL, pen, KCH, bki....

problem with departing from kl is their flight will not have PE class and somehow krisflyer will not process such booking (when u try searching PE on a flight without PE cabin, it will show error and simply would not proceed)

According to our favorite blogger, you'd have to call in for mixed class bookings unfortunately.

It's true, I don't think I can do long haul (>6 hours) in Y anymore sad.gif

But for short-med still ok. I'm really appreciative of carriers like airasia and what they're doing in the region, I just wish the passengers would behave better.

i think there are always limitations in what an online booking can do, so for the more complex redemptions, you will need to call the cs...

but they have j class across all their aircrafts, including mi, so that should not be a problem....

So far everyone who's been active on this thread has been fine with the ongoing discussion with the exception of ONE person (masked?). I can safely say the majority/"the masses" here would benefit from posts regarding the more intricate and finer points of each FFP.  I'd say to draw the line at the three FFPs this card transfers to.

Fruitie - yes you may be right but your attitude remains much to be desired. Mods should hold themselves to higher standards as hye has demonstrated. There is no community and no knowledge without members. It's a two way street.
dctravels, spot on. Personally I find it rewarding and satisfying to finally 'nail' a particularly difficult award redemption. If you're in it for easy bookings, then maybe the miles game is not for you.

I'd like to share a redemption I did last week on KF. Another trick to employ is that you can coax the call center agents to apply a 15% discount and apply "free stopover" rule in SIN citing that particular booking can't be done online (which is almost every booking worth its while).

For those of us based out of KUL sometimes its a bit sian to have to route through SIN every single time, so I tried routing through another *A carrier to see if I could get away with this particular itinerary:

KUL-BKK (TG) <stopover 3 days> BKK-SIN (SQ) <stopover 3 days> SIN-KUL (SQ)

Normally this would be priced as a partner award redemption since there's involvement of TG, and would cost 40k (20k each way, i.e. KUL-BKK-KUL, can't have additional stopover in SIN even if on SQ). The phone agent was able to reduce the miles down to 35k and I was able to coax her to give me a "free stopover" in SIN since it is technically a return trip (normally +USD100). The downside is most flights between KUL-SIN is on MI, and even though their system shows it can be booked, it'll error out and you'd incur more fees and miles. So your only option is probably SQ106 (always full/WL) or SQ116.

As far as the experience goes, TG regional was acceptable at best (the "Thai hospitality" only comes out with angmohs), while SQ regional just blows it out of the water. I was underwhelmed by all the lounges (KUL TG, BKK SKL, SIN T2 SKL) though, especially in T2 Changi. I mean, it's supposed to be your flagship right?

Here's the itinerary in case anyone is interested. Possibly can use to generate similar redemptions involving other cities in the region.

hye did say discussions on issues related to which ffp to choose is allowed...

but you are pushing the envelope here....lol

discussions on such complex redemptions perhaps is best in the ffp thread....

but seriously, why are you doing the above redemption? to get a "free" holidays in bkk and sin?....lol

I had to fly to those places anyway. Plenty of people get their employers to just give them cash to book their own tickets; this can be one of those ways.

guys what is the maximum period allowed by Asia Miles on their multi carrier award ticket?
Flight awards are valid for one year from the date of issue. So you must not issue your ticket before Dec/Jan if you're looking at Dec 2017 for your last sector.

Totally agree. I use to have an arbitrary rule of not bothering with business class unless the flight exceeds 2.5-3 hours but have recently found myself in the front cabin most of the time either through MUUpgrade, miles redemption or full-fare purchase. I had forgotten how ridiculous economy check-in lines at KLIA can get and nearly missed a flight because of the long queue at check-in (in the end I got out of the queue and paid for last-minute upgrade to J).

The confirmed overhead space for my carry-on luggage is a big plus, so much so that I almost always board last. Being one of the first to deplane has great value to me too as that means getting to the immigration counters before the hoard arrives, easily saving me 15-20 minutes by my estimate. The better seats and lounge access are also appreciated of course.

AA seats are bad...and anything longer than a couple of hrs is torture to my 6 foot frame....

Aax 330 seats are slightly better only....

Just did 8hrs BNE SIN on y and it was surprisingly comfortable....but it's a sunlight sq flight...

I think y long haul is still ok with the right airlines and aircrafts....

Btw, mods just deleted your posts in the maybank 2cp thread....

Six-footer here too. Flew KUL-CDG on AirAsia X's flat bed in 2011 and that was as good as it got in terms of AirAsia. I do not like SQ's J seat which forces you to sleep sideways with a tiny feet cubicle (those who've flown it will know what I mean).

Flew MH Y in Feb KUL-KIX. Not too bad but waist/hip area was sore for a few hours post flight.

BTW, I think what's going on at the maybank2cp thread is a farce.

It's ok lah. Let them have the last say, must save ego mah. I've come to expect very little from Malaysians, just thought mods running a forum like Lowyat would at least be rational. Like our current country's administration, we don't really have a say, so just shut up and take it right?

Not even the decency to move the posts at least. It takes time to put together a thoughtful post that isn't just rambling. I’m not sure if this is the best way to foster better information exchange.

It's truly disheartening and maybe I'll be back and contribute more tips and tricks in due time, but for now knowing they might just get deleted any time I'm really hesitant to sink more of my time into it.

I chuckled. Yes, in true SQ-kiasu style, must give illusion it’s “true 1-2-1”, instead of staggered. I prefer the EY style J seats so much more.

Is JL usually been so generous?

of like 10 dates i sample (nearest been before Xmas SIN-HND) and furthest in Oct 2017, J seats are wide open for redemption. Will this also be the case when you try to book with Asia Miles Multi carrer award?
