The Tern Verge X20 is sold at a ridiculous RM11,600 and the Tern Verge X10 is RM7,300  rclxub.gif The lowest rung for Tern Verge is the N8 selling at RM3,200, same frame.

Let's say,  Buy the Tern Verge N8, take off the wheelset, put in a Lite Pro rims (make sure it can take 11 speed) on it for another RM1,500, take off all groupset, get the Shimano 105/11 speed for RM1800 or the Shimano Ultegra for RM2,600.  So now your purchase is RM3,200 + RM1,500 + RM2,600  = RM7,300.

Factor in Kimbell Jaya's labour cost to install , another RM200 and FD adapter, another RM100, Aiyah!  icon_idea.gif Let's say RM8,000  for a Tern Verge X22.  So, you sell off the Ultegra STI shifters for RM700 and the rims and grouspset for another RM500, and the whole setup cost RM6,800 , give and take RM300. If you use the Shimano 105 which is already very good, it is around 6K only. In fact, you can change the handlebar, handlebar post, and everything to Lite Pro components and it is still around the price. Don't change the cranks lah, good to have a whole groupset.

The drawback is, you don't get the Tern Verge's top end exciting color and sadly this is the biggest motivation for many to buy. Prestige  but not performance.  biggrin.gif

Sorry for the late reply etigge, travelling la.

So now I am confused with all those different parameters to consider. But what would be a good replacement to the tern x30h? For not having to go through all those upgrades? I like the speed factor you get on the X30H gearing, which you don't find on present day TERN's or other foldies.

Is Kimbell Jaya a good place to go shop for Foldies?

Thanks for all the adivse etigge

What you wanted is a 30 speed gearing, right? 30 speed is a more .......all rounder, I would say. High enough for faster rides, even pedaling downhill and low gear for tough climbs. But it doesn't come cheap with original fixtures from branded names. As mentioned a Tern with that specs can reach over 10K.

So far, Kimbell Jaya is the only bike shop I see that is willing to do whatever the customer wants provided it is possible. USJ Cycles do not have the expertise or stock the parts to do it and neither is My Bike Shop in Bandar Utama. Together with Kimbell Jaya, these 3 are the biggest retailer of folding bikes in Klang Valley. So, I guess Kimbell Jaya is the best bet so folding bikes and also they give the best price. For moddings, just make sure Jimmy is around. Secondly Kimbell stocks many modding parts and also a lot of Shimano components. This makes it easier.

My advice is, visit Jimmy, talk to him and relay what I said. He knows Wong. Get the model that you like, I mean the shape and design that you like. Then go on from there. I am sure Jimmy have stock of Shimano Tiagra or Sora. I also suggest that you go for 2 x 11 or 2 x 10 speed which is the common setup nowadays. 2 speed in front shifts smoother and the rear, 9, 10 or 11 speed is basically the same as more important is the final ratio. All starts at 11 teeth at the rear but the final low gear (the biggest cog) can be 28, 30 or even 32 for all. All 9, 10 or 11 can have the same final ratio. Just that in 9 speed, you miss 2 ratios compared to 11 speed and 10 speed , you miss a ratio somewhere in between.

Also important to note that , 30 speed combinations, there are a lot of overlapping gear ratios, meaning you can find the same ratio using the largest chainring and also the same ratio using the middle chainring. That's why, internal hubs like the Rohloff which has 14 speeds only does cover the whole spectrum of the 30 speed gearings.

That's why, I suggested 2 x 10 speed. Not too expensive and not too bad either. Smoother shifting on the front and also the back if it is Tiagra (technology inherited from Shimano 105). Can come with Tiagra flat bar shifter. 3 x 10 speed are getting obsolete and only lower grade components have it nowadays. They are also heavier. So, eg. if you like the Tern D8, get the Tern. Get the Tiagra 2 x 10 speed and slap on it. Keep the taken off components aside in a box and sell it if you want. Start off with this. Should be about 4K and if you change the wheelset to 451, you can use the Tiagra C-brake calipers as well. Change also to Shimano original brake levers.

Anything higher than Tiagra will incur more cost because anything above that is 11 speed which needs different wheelset and also damn expensive shifters!

That's very nice of you. If your BF is hooked onto it, both of you will be a blessed couple. Not many couples ride together and with many at home grumbles, grumbles and grumbles when one is out somewhere riding. Between the 2 you mentioned, I go for the Mongoose. It's 24 speed right? icon_rolleyes.gif For a folding, I guess any kind of brake is OK but I lean more onto the V-brakes as it is easier to maintain and works more effectively than the disc brakes on folding bikes as most folding bikes with disc brakes are mechanicals, meaning they are still pulled by cables. Common sense says, how strong our fingers are when the braking surface is either a small disc with 6 inch diameter or the whole braking surface of the wheels which is 20 inches. Unless off course you change the disc brakes to hydraulics like those on mountain bikes.

actually, upgrading to 20 speeds doesn't cost that much. unless we want to put the shimano crank as well.

i just upgraded to 20 speed on my TRS victor, and cost me less than 1k for the whole groupset. deore cassette, shifters and rd, and the cheap 53-39 litepro crank (with bb). it get the jobs done and i can still use bike's stand.. tongue.gif .

for some dahon or tern, just need to add a bit only for adaptor and fd..and that's all..

I have a mini velo and at my age..........I don't think I can ride long distance with it. It's 451 wheelset and any riders here with folding bikes but want a faster ride? We can swap frames. You keep your components and I keep mine , we just swap the frames. If the wheelsets are different 406 or 451, we can still discuss. PM me if interested to swap.

Fiddling with the idea of getting a new bike, and have a few question I would like to ask if you don't mind. I have a budget of about 1k+/- and just plan to cycle around to bring my dog out for a jog.

1. I was thinking of getting a bike but not sure if I would actually need a folding function. Will a road bike at the same price range give a better bike?

2. I went around to shop today and noted a few bike within my budget range. A hummer folding mountain bikes, and a tern link B7 7 speed. What are your thoughts on the quality of these bikes? I like the look of the hummer more though.. XD

Thanks

If the hummer is a full size bike, I think smaller tern will enable u to navigate better with ur dog on tow, or vice versa...the hummer will probably enable u to venture to a rougher terrain with ur dog...

Anyway..I think the hummer ur talking about are those China made ciplak bikes...where as tern is a well known folding bike brand.

I presume you wont go over 20km,
Any 20" foldies will meet your needs. It's perfectly legal to not fold your bike when you don't want to.
There are plenty choice between 400~600 for you to accompany your dog .

Sifu and Sifu's..... My Dahon Speed D8 is now more than a year. looking at upgrade and need help here in term of cost.

Current original using SRAM x7, 8 speed.

Which would be a better enjoyment ride. Based on original, mainly use gear 7-8, not much usage on 1-6 so need more 9,10,11......

1. To change double chainring in front to have 16 gears.
a) front chainring set
b) new front shifter
c) apa lagi....

2. To change cassette from 8 to 11 (ultegra 6800)
a) chain
b) rear shifter
c) apa lagi....

lastly boil down to cost also, which of the above set up would be cheaper or same same.

Thanks.
*
If 1~6 are too light for you, you should change to bigger chainring. Cut throat price oso under 200 can kow tim
If 1~6 are too heavy for you, you should upgrade your legs.
2x9/10/11 sure buy you face,
Ultegra sure buy even more face.
And you still won't use your 1~6

Anyway I still made it up to fraser Hill with my cap ayam single chainring and tourney. twice. and 120km along federal high way and some.

I will use the budget for ultegra for buying a kapcai instead.
