Job Title : Project Engineer
Job Desciption : Assist PM, manage on going project, liaison with Consultant and subcon, more on project management
Years spent in company : 2 year + 1 month
Company : Local
Industry : Construction
Employment Level : Junior
Experience before joining : 2 years
Highest paper qualification/ education background : Bachelor Degree
salary : RM 3900 + RM 150 (allowance)
Location: KL
Age : 28 yo

before i join this company i was working in manufacture as a design engineer (in electronic). since the economy down and a lot electronic base manufacture started to retrench, so i jump ship to construction to be project engineer in electrical. the jobscope actually quite different compare to engineer in manufacture, so when i join this company only can consider as fresh grad status.

i feel kinda sad when i saw a lot sifu here already earning 5k and above at my age. my current position actually is not a electrical engineer at all, i m also doing mechanical, process and touch up a little on civil. i scare i wont be so competitive when i jump for higher pay, because all work i do only half bottle, not very detail and technical.

Any advise.

Project engineer/ project manager is a management role. You are the most visible in the project because you are suppose to lead the team working with/for you. Dont expect to go technical again if you decided to go this path after few years unless you are willing to from scratch.

To be honest I wasn't really expecting to land in this job. But a job is still a job. As a fresh grad I can't be the chooser.

Then again I still have no idea what to do in life. Goals, yes I have. But just don't know what road is best to reach it.

Forgot to ask you how the bonuses are like. If it's good, then your effective monthly pay is okay already.

I'm on the same boat as you (except older sad.gif).

2 years into the job, 3.6k after 2 increments. Shitty work-life balance (my most extreme case is working from 9 to 5. Not 9am to 5pm, but 9am to 5am). Nothing much to learn from work anymore. Can even tutor/guide my colleagues (but still labeled as junior  mad.gif ).

I guess maybe it is luck perhaps? Cos i enter as management trainee, then upon confirmed, i was given junior executive and after half a year later i was promoted to executive level.
Working from 8.30-5.30pm, sometime 6.30pm, latest was only till 8pm(that was some special case that need to resolve) Well, typical Chinaman company even public listed still the management suck i would say. No benefit at all, only thing that make me still attached with the company was only the paid and also distance from where i stay. If i could get better offer, i will definitely move but as well need to take consideration of accommodation and etc.

You get one month bonus during CNY upon confirmation as permanent staff. But i get another half month by cash, given by HR(not sure whether consider bonus or not, cos they pass me an angpau saying that it was an initiate that company took to appreciate your effort and contribution). Typical Chinaman company, you cant expect much... vmad.gif vmad.gif

Job Title : Project Manager
Job Desciption : Monitor construction project (however now more on product r&d)
Years spent in company : just joined
Company : MNC
Industry : Construction company
Tenure :Permanent
Employment Level : Project Manager
Experience before joining : 6 yrs
Highest paper qualification/ education background : Degree
salary : Sgd 5.5k + AWS + performance bonus
benefits : medical, insurance, employer cpf, handphone allowance etc, which are norm in industry
Location: Singapore

My original scope of works should be Construction related, but company got a R&D with one of the Client to implement new construction method/system, hence send me to manage the R&D project team. Is a good start for me and great learning experience, however, i become more like a product development PM than construction site PM

Previously all experience are under M&E Consultant, for 6 yrs
1st company - 2.4k (one yr)
2nd company - 2.8k - 3k - 3.2k (3 yrs)
3rd company - 4k - 4.2k (2yrs)
Now 4th company (Contractor firm) - 5.5k + AWS

While i think salary wise still below the market rate, as normally PM should be 7k to 8k, however, just jump from Consultant to Contractor, so no experience, no bargain power.

Highest paper qualification/ education background : Master's Degree
salary : [yearly] USD 120k base + ~USD70k bonus, stocks + USD500/month transportation allowance

Similar to Igloo0000, I have never worked in Malaysia before and started my career in the States.
From looking through Glassdoor, a similarly titled position in Malaysia for a large US company pays RM20k-RM25k per month. What do you all think? I know it cannot be direct conversion of 1USD=RM4 but my feeling is that RM25k/month in KL is pretty comfortable, especially with a working spouse.

I am very interested since I'm considering transferring to the Malaysia/Singapore office with my company and would like to know the market rate.

New York is a very expensive city, don't think USD120k get you very far. Yes, RM20-25k in malaysia gives you a very comfortable life, but this salary is usually for Director/HOD level, for senior managers, maybe possible if you're in the higher tier, or expats.
But you might also want to consider other factors before moving back: quality of education and other opportunities in US vs Malaysia (especially if you have kids), political and economic stability. If you follow our news closely, you would've read that more and more Malaysians are migrating out (especially the capable ones), not the other way round.
