QUOTE(mini orchard @ Jun 2 2021, 08:42 PM) Use a toothpick to remove to see or feel what is it ? Most likely is your additional white polyester type filter disintegrating. It feel like powder, but when press it just wet with sand feel. I use toothbrush to clean it all. I have remove the additional filter yesterday, today looks fine. Will keep monitor. I've been using extra filter about 7 years since install. Possible the blower getting old? or the power not enough? My unit have extra 'Power saving' function which I can step down the power. I always use the lowest to save electricity.

My second layer carbon filter is covered with whitish powder in one of the room....also abestos ceiling board.

My second layer carbon filter is covered with whitish powder in one of the room....also abestos ceiling board. shouldn't be. As if is from ceiling board, when I remove the extra filter, it should be more white powder spot on the coil. Oh ya, my white spot is mainly at bottom part only. Not much, but worry as a bit abnormal. You also use 2 filter? Use for how long already? All good?

QUOTE(dannyw @ Jun 2 2021, 07:03 PM) Need some expert advice. May I know what is those white spot? It looks like ice for me, but I turn off my aircon before morning, and I check evening still can see this. If is ice it should be melt after some times. I wonder is my additional filter cause the air flow problem. I will remove it and monitor. just some deposit which consist of mineral, biofilm(bacteria, fungus) etc etc. those are no big deal and can be left alone. it doesnt impede airflow or damage the fin.

Thanks, looks familiar, is it Sharp? QUOTE(slimey @ Jun 3 2021, 10:31 AM) just some deposit which consist of mineral, biofilm(bacteria, fungus) etc etc. those are no big deal and can be left alone. it doesnt impede airflow or damage the fin. Ya, I think 'deposit' is the correct word. Thanks I just worry is ice build up or gas leaking. While remove the extra filter, I feel my aircon cooler yesterday. Just for sure will have more dust on fin.

QUOTE(mini orchard @ Jun 3 2021, 10:44 AM) Pana. You notice the white powder like on the filter. Similar to yours. Now Panasonic filter also like this. My old model is more tiny. This looks similar to my Sharp filter. Yours not obvious. My is at bottom of fin. So it always wet. My extra filter is put on top of the unit. Easy for me to clean just vaccum on it will do.

CAUTION! This morning my neighbour was trying to replace his ODU capacitor and it exploded on his hand...so loud noise, I immediately jumped out of my chair and run outside to see, looks like all his fingers were all disintegrated... He was in shocked. His mother sent him to hospital already. Dunno what happen next. So becareful guys, don't DIY replacing capacitor if you dunno what you are doing. I will try to upload some photos of the incident later, if allowed by the neighbour.

I will try to upload some photos of the incident later, if allowed by the neighbour. possible reasons : 1. didnt follow safety first ( power down properly and isolate electricity, disconnect old cap, discharge old cap, install new cap correctly, secure the cap and odu then only on power). 2. buy the wrong cap. as far as i know, all the aircond odu caps are non-polar in nature. if bought a polar one and assembled wrongly(reverse polarity) then the cap will blow when powered on. otherwise, it is extremely hard to mess up changing a capacitor

Most likely he couldnt find a AC man during this lockdown plus the hot weather and decided to diy

Most likely he couldnt find a AC man during this lockdown plus the hot weather and decided to diy I dunno what actually happened, maybe he wants to DIY to save money... But we need to create awareness about the danger of this. Don't simply DIY if you only know a little bit here and there only. Let the professionals do the job for you. Your fingers are more important in saving them than saving your money. To be honest, I have given up all DIY jobs at home due to the danger of it. I just leave to professionals to do it. Life has no take two...

Of all the home diy, electrical wiring is the most dangerous. To many who has knowledge and experience, it is simple. I have known people falling down from roof/ladder trying to check a faulty odu or repair a roof leak .... because of wrong footing or slippery tiles after raining.

I will try to upload some photos of the incident later, if allowed by the neighbour. He didnt discharge the cap properly before handling. All AC cap still got residual charge inside. Should use one of those old 60W or 100W hot bulb to discharge. Personally i don't condone using screwdriver to short out the cap. A resistor-based cap discharge tool is best, or just hook up one hot tungsten bulb will be enough to discharge it. This post has been edited by ceo684: Jun 5 2021, 12:48 AM

But usually a failed cap can’t hold a charge. And caps are designed to be able to discharge quickly when shorted with a screwdriver. And often there is self discharge mechanism built into the aircon circuit. The only time they explode violently is when it is installed reverse polarity. But I have yet to see a polar cap in aircon. Yes the cap can tahan but my concern is (unlike an intended discharge with 2 wires); a screwdriver has more likelihood of contacting more things unintentionally, dunno touch here touch there or shorted 3 contacts together, aside from full unimpeded current. Hence i prefer using old hot bulb that we don't use anymore as it give the visual indication the charge is being used up, then can test w voltmeter again to see the cap state of charge.

AC cap should be able to discharge itself while it still connect to the motor? It can’t hold the charge. Unless that is DC inverter aircon. A DC cap?
