I dont think its due to US-Based google account, basically if you are being detected not in the US (geolocation) they would not allow those apps (i.e. for you due to rights issue), you can still sideloads the apps but to watch you need to VPN.

Hmmmm....I was as happy as you when I got mine to replace my nexus player as well...but I dunno why, I still stick to my Nexus Player now, maybe the update is slow and I am not really impressed

the OS updates are slower? is it running Android 7 already? Any other drawbacks or benefits over Nexus Player? Appreciate for sharing in advance!

just did some googling.. and realize that Nougat wasn't released for this box yet. what a bummer!
I have an impression that it will be updated per the same schedule as Nexus Player. Makes me rethink my decision to buy it..

Hmmm..how could i put it...you have experience Nexus Player (now on Android 7), when I moved back to Android 6 on this box just that the feeling is not that good as I have used Android 7 (maybe that's just me). I think is is one of the drawback, where a more recent box like this can't have an updated OS if compared to Nexus Player which is already >2 years old.

I bought this box thinking for it's ability to play 4K, but end of they day I realize that 1080p is pretty decent for me, so it's not much or a benefit for me at this point.

Anyway, it's not a Nexus / Pixel device, so it would not get exclusive software support directly from Google. Thus I don't think it will get updated on the same time as per Nexus Player.

Anyway, I think those APPs are not meant for our market hence it make no sense for Xiaomi to preload those apps, which will only cause potential problem with users complaining why this can't use that can't use. But you can use these apps via VPN (via download from Google Play or sideloading them to your box).

You're right. Perhaps the official Malaysian version (http://www.mi.com/my/mibox/) will not have SlingTV, Pandora and other US based apps in the recommender.

thanks for the feedback! I'll reconsider. The main reason I'm replacing my Nexus Player is due to the original remote has broken, currently using the Xiaomi's Game Controller because I can't find a replacement remote.

I should not buy from china. Didnt realize it got so much limitation. My unit like a dead zombie now.

Yeah, perhaps. Mine is from Xiaomi Hong Kong, they have removed all those US based apps in the box (also will not appear on the Home Screen - Xiaomi recommendation).

mine model is mdz-19-aa which is china version. most apps are geo-locked.

I see...remote broken? you dropped it? I do understand how different it feels by using a Gamepad to navigate instead of a remote control.
Btw, Why not get an air mouse? I think it works like a remote.

my kids dropped it multiple times. I don't like using an air mouse. Gamepad is okay just a bit bulky. I'm supposed I'll go ahead and buy one Mi Box to try. Hopefully, they'll release Nougat soon.
