Anyone tried putting Sonoff into the light switches?

Say I wanted to use one of the on/off light switch to control a few lights in the living room wirelessly. Initially, I just switch it on/off with my fingers, can I splice the Sonoff into the switch to control wirelessly?

Yes, I've added a Sonoff basic to my study light. But I flashed it with ESP Easy firmware so it can works without internet.

Same function. You still can remotely turn it on/off via internet or LAN. Timer is also working. And it's more responsive than the original firmware.

The main purpose I flashed it to ESP Easy is I can ask Siri to control it and do automation.

My IT expert friend told me, consumer type modem router are not stable. You need to reset once a while.

You want good wan will cost RM20k. Which is for industrial use.
*
Well not true. Even commercial grade WAP router also do hung up once in a while. Even cellphone transmission tower also auto-reboot on heavy load. My cheap router from TM, I can never recall when I need to reboot it.

The expensive wireless router and home router use the same wireless chipset. The expensive one normally have more RAM and faster processor. What makes it more different is mostly the software side. More configurations and settings. It is more flexible because it is needed for different environment.

There's a few firmware available (espurna, tasmota)
Why do you prefer esp easy firmware among others?
I just flash tasmota since it was recommended from a sonoff tutorial that I saw

I can read your mind. tongue.gif

I know you think just download the firmware and upload to the sonoff and done.

But seeing it need to open and solder, buy the pin, wire and the USB communication with some lenght of instruction to flush the firmware, forget it.

No need to solder actually, you just put in the pins and make sure it stays in place and start flashing

I think sonoff don't have header pin.

What he mean is that you can just buy the male to female jumper cables and put it on the 4 out of 5 slot there. Make sure the cables not moving while flashing.

Hope it helps. smile.gif

Yeah, like this
Just need to get those jumper cables and ftdi ttl chip
Also, there's no going back to itead firmware since they're not open source once you flash custom firmware
Make sure to also have mqtt server running (if you have raspberry pi, you can install on that)
This tutorial should cover everything
